Update Cool Technology Things Review

Update Cool Technology Things Review – Earlier this week, I posted my review of iOS 16. As you may have noticed, in all eight chapters of the story, I mentioned some of the flaws and features of iOS 16 that I didn’t like. That gave me the idea.

First, though, let me thank everyone who read, enjoyed, and recommended the review. I am glad that the story was heard by the readers. I take my responsibility to do this annual review very seriously, and I’m glad to have found a format that allows me to review an operating system as widespread as iOS in a review that’s still accessible and fun to write.

However: while writing the review, I realized that I have some complaints about things I don’t like in iOS 16 (

Working on an update to my Obsidian plugin that allows me to compile review chapters into a single Markdown file. This update, rolling out for Club+ and Premier Members this Saturday, allowed me to mark specific review articles as “complaints” and release them all at once. You can use this new plugin option however you want: it will work for any type of text you want to highlight from a long-form story in Obsidian.

That said, I’ve collected all my iOS 16-related complaints, organized them into sections, and you can find them below.

Here are all the things I didn’t like about iOS 16, which I hope Apple will fix in the future.

There is not enough space for widgets on the Lock Screen. This is the big one for me. Currently, there is a horizontal strip of widgets on the Lock Screen. So, I found myself having to choose between the four widgets under the clock or constantly switching between different Lock Screens. I’m not saying Apple should fill the Lock Screen to the brim with widgets, but I think, at least, a second layer would help a lot.

It might not be much, but I don’t understand why Apple didn’t make at least *two* rows on the bottom of the watch. One is very limited. https://t.co/ps7nzAcL7e — Federico Viticci (@viticci) September 14, 2022

You cannot customize the camera and flashlight buttons on the Lock Screen. In iOS 16, you can customize almost everything about the Lock Screen

Camera and flashlight buttons. It seems like an oversight at this point, and I hope we don’t have this problem again next year. My proposed solution: every button you normally find in Control Center should also be “maximized” for the Lock Screen.

There should be an easy way to swipe through Lock Screens. Speaking of multiple Lock Screens: I hope it’s as easy to manually swipe through multiple Lock Screens during the day as you are swiping through faces on the Apple Watch. Maybe the two finger swipe gesture will help.

Custom Lock Screen Colors should be used for all Lock Screen fonts. This is an unusual limitation on a very well thought out feature. Custom Lock Screen Colors are not supported for text and icons in the iPhone status bar. I’m sure millions of people will spend more time than previously expected to choose that font color combination

It’s ok with them. But if those colors are not used in the status bar and other aspects of the Lock Screen, it feels bad and makes those parts of the Lock Screen look bad. Hopefully Apple will fix this soon.

Apple hasn’t developed enough widgets for its own apps. I’ve felt it all summer: Apple should do more with its widgets this year. In fact, some apps that use Home Screen widgets aren’t suitable for the Lock Screen, either because of technical limitations (the Photo widget doesn’t look good) or because it wouldn’t bring much benefit to a Lock Screen that can be seen (Do you want to use the File widget there?). However, there are many apps, features, and widgets that would make sense because Lock Screen Widgets are missing in iOS 16. Why no Music, Contacts, Shortcuts, Notes, or a larger Reminders widget?

Home Screen widgets are not yet supported. Home Screen widgets were classified as “viewable” widgets two years ago, but now we have viewable Lock Screen widgets as well. It is a confusion. I think the Lock Screen widgets are the ones to check out; those on the Home Screen should be viewed

Synchronous interaction. Apple seems to know this on other platforms, why not on iOS as well?

Apple hasn’t built enough Focus Filters into its apps. What I said about Lock Screen widgets also applies to Focus Filters: I wish Apple made more of these for their apps. I’d like to see more controls for iMessage conversations (no way to filter pinned threads, for example) and filters for apps like Reminders, Notes, Music, and Files. Since the technology is based on App Intent, hopefully Apple can add more app filters over time like it can with Shortcuts actions.

Shortcuts continue to feel buggy and unreliable. I hope I don’t have to say this again after last year’s SwiftUI rewrite, but I keep running into all kinds of UI bugs, crashes, and unexpected behavior in the Shortcuts app. The situation has been bad for me lately, the program is struggling with the shortcuts I need to make for Club members.

In general, the functionality of the Shortcuts editor – the actual process of dragging and dropping actions – is very often, vague: I often end up with actions that should not be, or the editor freezes, or see something strange. UI error. Sometimes actions from apps don’t show up in Shortcuts unless I force quit the app. Sometimes loading the action list takes more than 10 seconds and I’m left staring at a blank screen. Some functions (see more below) do not work as intended.

What Is Alexa (and What’s The Best Alexa Speaker For 2023)?

Left: one day, I woke up and Shortcut decided to dump some of my shortcuts in their folders. Right: the loading screen in action that I often see within seconds.

It’s unfortunate how much I love Shortcuts, and I know there are other smart people working at Apple on the Shortcuts team. But the truth is that the stability and optimization of Shortcuts are not up to Apple’s standards at the moment.

The ‘Open Note’ action does not work. Let me give you specific examples. The ‘Open Note’ action still does not support opening a note directly if passed from the ‘Find Notes’ action; The ‘Find Notes’ action does not yet support searching within the Quick Notes folder.

The ‘Delete Shortcuts’ action is not supported. I expect this action to be useful when combined with a separate ‘Shortcut’ type, which has a property that returns the step count of the shortcut in iOS 16. By combining the action ‘Find My Shortcuts’, ‘ActionCount’. properties, and the new ‘Delete Shortcuts’ action, I thought I could create a shortcut to delete all the shortcuts in my library that have 0 actions. These are the shortcuts I take when I want to try something quickly, then I delete their actions , but forget to delete the shortcuts themselves. Unfortunately, the ‘Clear Shortcuts’ action doesn’t seem to accept a list of shortcuts stored in the parameter, which is a bit far-fetched.

Things I Already Like About Android N Developer Preview

There are no third-party triggers for Shortcut automations yet. It was about time that personal mechanics went beyond the usual range of triggers offered by Apple; there should be a developer API for third-party triggers in Shortcuts automation, and that doesn’t exist this year either.

We need new colors for shortcuts and glyphs. Apple has a system-wide color picker now, and they use it everywhere in iOS 16. Why do we still have 15 colors in Shortcuts? And why doesn’t the app choose the SF Symbols face that we can use as icons?

Notes require Smart Folder filters for note titles and body text. Despite the great improvements to smart folders in Notes this year, you still can’t create filters that search for notes based on title and body text. This is one of my favorite things about integrating a great search through Dataview into Obsidian, and I’m sad that Apple doesn’t have a native, visual answer to this in the iOS 16 Notes app.

Quick Tip for iPhone is a bad move. Unlike its iPad counterpart, Quick Note for iPhone is a full-screen window that lets you take new quick notes and lets you swipe through your existing quick notes.

This is wrong for several reasons. First, as we saw in Picture in Picture, the iPhone is perfectly capable of handling small floating windows that you can drag around the screen. What’s worse, however, is that the iPhone version of Quick Note has been relegated to a “friend” experience that only lets you create new notes instead of letting you see them.
