1. Colhay, born out of the frustration of not being able to find the wool garments you were looking for?

In a way yes, but the inspiration behind Colhay goes deeper. My father has been in the fashion industry all his life, first in the menswear industry in the 1970s and then starting his own costume jewelry and accessories business. Growing up, I would visit his office and see piles of fashion magazines on his large oak desk, thousands of samples tacked to the walls and scattered around the showroom. Consequently, from an early age my father had a great influence on me in terms of style; he was a “cool” dad and dressed impeccably; one of those dads who always had something to say about the clothes I was wearing and would nod in approval or frown in disapproval! I remember we would go shopping together and he would give me all kinds of style advice, as you would expect from a dad who works in fashion. So my love and interest in clothing grew out of that, and it’s no surprise that he eventually turned to menswear. Perhaps the biggest impression he left on me was his belief in investing in the best quality clothing and taking long-lasting care of it, because it will take care of you.

In particular, having grown up in the British colony of Hong Kong, he strongly believed that British-made clothing was of the highest quality and worth the investment. He gave me two tartan sweaters he bought with his first paycheck in the 1970s, in pristine condition after almost 40 years of wear and hand washing. I was so impressed with the quality that I went on the hunt for the same quality sweaters my dad raved about, but struggled to find the same level of quality designed to flatter. who wears it – if the quality was there, the style wasn’t; and viceversa. I finally found the town in Scotland where my father’s sweaters were made many years ago. Some manufacturers, albeit smaller ones, still produce my father’s sweaters with the same quality as they did years ago. In fact, one of the factory directors recognized the tag on my father’s sweater right away and joked that he must have helped make the sweater when he was young, 40 years ago!

This is how Colhay’s was born: the idea is to combine heirloom quality (clothing that lasts a lifetime) with aesthetics and design that will flatter the wearer. It’s modern, yes, but it’s really about creating clothes that last for decades while still looking contemporary! As a result, I spend a lot of time designing and redesigning the smallest details: how slim the waist or ribbed hem should be, how the collar should be placed on the dress. I also spend a lot of time on colors and patterns – to strike a balance between looking elegant, but also being elegant so that it doesn’t distract the wearer!

For example, our super slim lambswool cricket jumper has a v-neck design that is deliberately cut deeper and is also done in very dark brown, olive green, navy and cream stripes. I think these design details make the outfit more modern and relevant than the more traditional cricket sweaters with brighter colors and narrower, smaller v-necks. 2. We’ve been seeing an extraordinary comeback of the cardigan over the past 2 years. How did you try to change or compose the “old” image that clothing creates for some people?

Good question! A cardigan is a great piece of clothing – it gives a carefree vibe. It is very comfortable and goes with almost any outfit. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that the cardigan is also our favorite style. As I mentioned, with any product we want to make sure the garment looks good on the wearer, and there are certain design elements that help shake up that “old” image to help make the garment more modern.
