Because of this, Samsung’s latest phone, the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G, is a flagship in the truest sense of the word. There is a lot of horsepower under the hood and a camera setup that can click beautiful pictures in different conditions. What’s the catch? Well, Samsung wants potential buyers to have more than one grip on the phone, and for the price, the S21 Ultra 5G leaves little room for error.
Additionally, following in Apple’s footsteps, the company removed the original box accessories from the S21 Ultra’s retail package, including a case, a set of headphones, and a wall mount. More attention will be paid to the phone’s sticker price, as the S21 Ultra is cheaper globally than the S20 Ultra launched last year. In India, however, the company launched the phone at a higher starting price compared to last year’s model.

Samsung knows a thing or two about designing flagships – after all, the company has been honing its craft for nearly a decade. So, the S21 Ultra 5G looks and feels like an expensive product. The handset is packed with luxury features and features a metal housing with a camera model protruding from one side. Speaking of which, the S21 Ultra’s camera setup is similar to the Note 20 Ultra’s ( review ), although it’s not as big or boxy. However, the curved and rounded corners give the smartphone a unique look.
Add to that the hidden color scheme of the Phantom Black device, and the design of the S21 Ultra 5G, which in my books, looks like it’s going to look like a style of style. I, for one, really love the design of the phone, and from where I stand, there’s only one thing I can think of that could be better. As you can see, the S21 Ultra 5G’s frame is glossy, which sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the classic matte finish of the back. But apart from that, I have no doubt that people who decide to buy the handset will also appreciate the features of the phone.
When it comes to ergonomics here and there, the S21 Ultra 5G leaves a lot to be desired. In Samsung’s defense, the brand has done everything necessary to make this large and heavy phone (227g) comfortable with one hand. But the curved sides and back are more than enough to hold your hand, especially when the weight of the smartphone is heavy from above, and the weight is distributed unevenly on the housing.
It goes without saying that you should put a case on the S21 Ultra and not rely on its IP68 certification or Gorilla Glass Victus layer to save the day. Better safe than sorry, amirite? Before I wrap up the design part, let me answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the phone – Question 1 – Does the camera blur a bit and does the phone shake when placed on a flat surface? The S21 Ultra is the first S-series flagship to officially support the S Pen stylus. However, there is no Note device to test the company’s claims, and the phone does not ship. I should also note that the S Pen stylus that comes with the Note 20 Ultra has a battery and charges that goes inside the phone case. As such, the company has stated that the S Pen for the S21 Ultra does not support Bluetooth or wireless functionality.
If you like to read, you will definitely enjoy typing on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. The haptic feedback is very tight and refined, and the buttons are very intuitive. Samsung phones are known for having the most impressive displays in the industry, and the S21 Ultra 5G is no exception to this rule. In fact, I’ve been using the phone for almost a week, and I can confidently say that the phone’s 6.8-inch Dynamic 2X AMOLED panel is the best I’ve ever seen on a phone. The display is very sharp thanks to the WQHD+ resolution, which provides a pixel density of 551 pixels per inch. It goes without saying that the panel gets really bright at 1500 nits, so there’s no external issue. I will add that the panel has a very dark black and deep contrast, which makes it easy to consume content on the phone. That being said, the Widevine L1 phone is indeed certified and can play shows in HDR from popular OTT platforms like Netflix.
I spent a good portion of my review time watching Lupine and Darkness on the phone, and the scenes show the group’s benefits. Both scenes were shot in a slightly dark environment, but thanks to the HDR-compatible screen of the S21 Ultra, I was able to see everything on the screen without changing the brightness of the surface. Additionally, I didn’t experience any black drop issues, and overall, the viewing experience offered by the S21 Ultra 5G is in a class of its own.

And that’s not all, since the S21 Ultra 5G also comes with a 120Hz refresh rate that can be reduced to 10Hz for real content, thus improving the phone’s battery life. Although I would like an option to lock the refresh rate of the display to 120Hz, I admit, I rarely see animations or transitions on my phone. What’s more, unlike the S20 Ultra, you can use adaptive smoothing in WQHD+ resolution, which is a big plus. You can go down to 60Hz and change the screen resolution to FHD +, but for the best experience I recommend running the phone at WQHD + / FHD + with a 120Hz rate.
Samsung’s flagship models rarely offer low-end cameras, and you’ll be happy to know that the S21 Ultra 5G also offers what is, in my books, the best photography experience. In fact, the company has improved the phone’s camera capabilities over its predecessor, not least because the S20 Ultra (review) has been released with decent cameras. But before I say more, I need to get the points out of the way first.
Starting with the main camera, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is equipped with a 108-megapixel ISOCELL HM3 image sensor that works with two 10MP telephoto lenses with an aperture of f/1.8 and f/2.4. . Finally, there is a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens on the back that offers a FoV of 120 degrees. I should also add that the phone gets a dedicated laser autofocus unit and OIS on the main camera. For selfies, the device gets a 40-megapixel selfie camera on the front.
When it comes to daytime photos, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra will delight you with stunning photos that deliver vibrancy and detail. Despite the smartphone’s ability to take photos, the company has improved the post-processing and the image quality is not deceptive. An example is the comparison photos I’ve added with the S20 Ultra and the S21 Ultra 5G. When you turn on the visual digitalization and set the HDR to automatic mode, you can see that the S20 Ultra has a lot of color, which you can see by the blue color of the sky. What’s more, it’s a little different from the hand, which can be seen when you look at the engine exhaust and the surrounding bushings. The processing behind the S21 Ultra, on the other hand, is much better as the phone fills the shot with strong colors but does so while maintaining the dynamic range. Then the bright areas are clearly visible and details from the shadows (dark areas) are shown correctly.

In my testing, I found this to be the biggest difference between the two phones.
