The Samsung Galaxy A51 is an affordable way to get a good Galaxy phone, but it’s a little too slow for Android to wholeheartedly recommend.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is a relatively affordable Android phone to buy if you can’t splurge on the Samsung Galaxy S22 or Galaxy S21, or if you can’t pick up the Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition in your area.

The lower price comes with clear downgrades from Samsung’s more expensive phones. We’ll cover these in detail later in this Samsung Galaxy A51 review, but in short the back is plastic rather than glass, the cameras aren’t that great (although there are five of them), the chipset is underpowered and fancy, and extra features like waterproofing are missing.

The classic Samsung features you get on the Galaxy A51 include a bold AMOLED display and software similar to the Galaxy S21 series.

Priced at $399 / £329 / AU$599, the Samsung A51 looks set to be a hit. However, there are more obvious performance issues here than options like the Moto G8 Plus and Oppo Reno 2Z. Android is a bit slow. Parts of the camera app sometimes do this too. Luckily, gaming hasn’t been affected too badly – PUBG fans, don’t worry.

Don’t expect miracles from the cameras. Like many affordable quad-camera phones, it feels like a dual-lens phone with half-baked extras, though its tertiary macro camera is better than most in its class and offers another way to take pictures.

After we reviewed this device, Samsung also introduced a slightly tweaked version called the Galaxy A51 5G. We haven’t tested that device properly yet, but the big difference is that it has a different chipset with additional 5G connectivity.

The company has now followed up the Galaxy A51 with the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G. It – in addition to having 5G – has other upgrades like a 120Hz screen, a bigger 4,500mAh battery, more megapixels on the main camera and a different chipset.

Of course, it costs more, so the Samsung Galaxy A51 is still worth considering – it’s not one of Samsung’s best phones, but it’s still a solid choice.

Samsung’s Three Year Old Galaxy A51 Is Getting A New Security Update

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is priced at $399 / £329 / AU$599, so it’s a very affordable phone, competing with the likes of the Moto G 5G Plus at £379 (around $480, AU$680) and the OnePlus Nord at £299. (About $375 , AU$535).

Other options include the iPhone SE (2022) at $429 / £419 / AU$719 and the Google Pixel 4a at $349 / £349 / AU$599. It is worth mentioning that the first three of these are 5G phones and the last one, the Galaxy A51, is not.

Well, the model we reviewed didn’t, but Samsung later released a 5G version for $500 / £429 (around AU$700). Although more expensive than the 4G version, it is not as expensive as 5G phones.

Of course, the prices we’ve listed above are launch prices, but if you shop around, you can find the Samsung Galaxy A51 at a lower price right now. At the time of writing, we’ve seen it retail for $290 / £230 / AU$390.

Although the 5G version isn’t available in Australia, you can pick up the Samsung Galaxy A51 in most countries where Samsung phones are sold. It’s weird, we don’t know if it’s a permanent condition or temporary.

If you have a little more to spend, you might also want to consider the new Samsung Galaxy A52 5G.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 offers some of the design features of Samsung’s high-end phones. But there are some giveaways that it’s not part of the expensive Galaxy S series.

The screen bezels are narrow and the front camera sits in one of Samsung’s “Infinity O” holes. However, the back is more plastic than glass, and the front camera doesn’t fit anywhere near the front glass.

Of course, the front glass covers the selfie camera. But the bottom layers are more reflective, and the Samsung A51’s selfie camera stands out like a miniature monocle.

The side buttons are also plastic. The result? The construction of the Samsung Galaxy A51 is closer to the Motorola Moto G8 or the Oppo A5 2020 than the high-end Samsung.

However, it has a slightly different back. Like other new A-series phones, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has a finish of intersecting lines, cut shapes on the back, each with a slightly different look. The bottom has a pinstripe texture of fine lines, for example, that sits under the plastic layer on top.

It’s a relatively subtle look, but when the Samsung Galaxy A51 catches the light, you’ll see a variety of rainbow tones collected in laser stripes across the curved edges.

It can pass for a more expensive Samsung from a distance, especially since the large four-lens camera body on the back looks advanced. This phone is built for media and is wider than the Galaxy S20.

Like most phones at its price point, the Samsung Galaxy A51 doesn’t offer official water resistance. But it does have a 3.5mm headphone port, which is handy if you haven’t made the leap to Bluetooth headphones yet.

It also has an in-display fingerprint scanner, another attempt to make the Samsung Galaxy A51 look like a high-end phone. However, this is not a good scanner. It’s slower than most and won’t detect if your fingers are slightly wet or you’re not very careful with your thumb position.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2400. It’s an instant win on paper, as many phones at this price point have LCD screens.

OLEDs provide much deeper colors and better contrast than LCDs because they use illuminated pixels instead of a universal backlight. However, it’s not one of Samsung’s best OLED panels and has a few issues.

Usually when you turn the phone screen left or right, low-end OLED panels take on a slight blue tint from an angle. It’s rarely a big problem since we all look at our phones from the front, right?

But this effect comes from the other side in Samsung A51. Hold it in a relaxed, tilted position, and there’s this blue color at the top of the screen. It’s only noticeable when the main parts of the screen are white, like on web pages for example, but it immediately shows that this isn’t one of Samsung’s best OLEDs.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 also gets the usual benefits of an OLED screen. Its optional Vivid screen mode looks very saturated, and contrast in a dark room is much better than LCD phones for the price.

Screen brightness is also pretty good, if not in the same league as the Galaxy S20. Maximum brightness seems conservative when used indoors, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 kicks it up a gear when taken outside on a bright day. It fiddles with color and contrast to enhance visibility in harsh conditions.

It’s not bright enough to watch movies in direct sunlight, but the interface and web pages are very clear.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 has been certified for HD Netflix since launch, but it doesn’t support HDR video.

Issues aside, it’s a great phone for video streaming, although the reflective (if small) camera is twice as distracting anywhere than indoors.

Samsung Galaxy A51 has four rear cameras. But when you first start the camera, you might wonder what half of them do.

There’s no zoom, a classic sign of a multi-camera setup that uses extra lenses to add up to the numbers. Can’t entirely blame Samsung for this, as it’s not easy to get a good zoom camera in a budget phone.

You get a 48MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera and a pair of 5MP cameras used for close-up macro shots and blurred depth shots in the background.

The filler isn’t hard to find: those two 5MP cameras. But this case is much less than what Oppo has tried recently. The Oppo A9 2020 has a pair of seriously underpowered 2MP cameras.

The Samsung Galaxy A51’s 5MP macro camera won’t win you the Wildlife Photographer of the Year award, but it’s fun to play with. You can get very close to your subject and shoot objects that the main camera won’t even focus on. Apart from the merely acceptable image quality, its main problem is blurring. If the light level is not good, a little hand shake can ruin your photos.

It’s still a useful macro camera, and offers a different way to think about how you take pictures. Samsung
