Nautical motifs dominate, including the torpedo/submarine motif, the “waves” pattern etched in the hood band, and the three “porthole” ink windows, which I love more than anything else. I know the design is flourishing. The “portholes” can sometimes struggle to let in enough light to give a great look at the ink supply, but it’s still a nice visual touch.

By far, my favorite aspect of the Nautilus fountain pen is Nahvalur’s use of high quality ebonite in a striking linear pattern. Why do I like ebonite as a material for fountains? For starters, it feels solid in the hand – light but solid, with a warmth that acrylics and resins sometimes lack. You get many visually interesting variations on a material that gives a vintage vibe from celluloid or cellulose acetate.
Given its form, Nautilus does not post messages. Still, it’s a very well-balanced pen that’s very comfortable, even for long periods of writing. Like the original Plus, the Nautilus’ nib is smooth and requires very little pressure to write. The navy blue Nautilus pictured here originally had a double wide (BB) round tip, which is not usually my cup of tea, and while it says fine out of the box, I chose to grind it down to a Mini. “Naginata” style nib C.Y. Tokyo Station Pens. Obviously this is a great writer. My Stylophora Berry Nautilus (purple pen) has a standard Nahvalur fine nib, and while it certainly writes “well” on the wider side, the consistently wet line makes for a comfortable writing experience.
While both Nautilus pens have rose gold nibs and embellishments, the engraving on the nib is the same as on the Original Plus. As a general observation, Nahvalur fountain pens have a little wobble, which makes them great platforms for nib adjustments (especially the “B” and “BB” nib widths).

Because it is a piston refill, the Nautilus holds a lot of ink, making it a writer’s workhorse. I’ve been rolling out one of these pens at all times since late spring, and I’ve enjoyed using them in my journals for extended late-night and early-morning sessions. Larger, unique pens like the Nautilus tend to be a little too “conversation piece-y” for my office environment, but I’ve taken them to work with me, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t use this pen not to be trusted. your daily driver. I will note that for some reason, I have found that ebonite pens do not necessarily travel well, as they tend to shed more ink in response to air pressure and temperature changes than other types of pens. If youare looking for a pen to take on the plane, go with the Original Plus with a shut-off valve.

One of the reasons I love the Nautilus is that there is nothing on the market right now. If I had to choose a “peer” pen, I would compare it to the Opus 88 Jazz of Lobster (with a slightly higher price tag given the piston and premium ebonite) and the standard steel Leonardo Momento Zero. nib. I would avoid calling each of these pens outright “competitors” as they are very different aesthetically and the Nahvalur pens certainly have their own unique image and writing feel. .

I clearly remember my first Kaweco arriving at my door. It was early in my fountain pen journey, I hadn’t even written my first book, and I wanted to bring that kind of love into my life. I slipped the little Kaweco box out of the beige bubble wrap and was amazed at how great the Mint Skyline Sport fountain pen looked in person. As my collection has grown, I have collected the pen, but it still tops my list of all-time favorite pens. So when Goldspot reached out with an offer to try out their new exclusive Kaweco Sport Clear Fountain Pen, I thought it would be a great time to revisit one of my favorite pens.
The color 2020 Pantone Color of the year is inspired by the classic blue, and it is a beauty. The silver accents of the pencil complement the sheer blue on blue. Kaweco fans will immediately recognize the Sport’s traditional octagonal extended hood, and the exclusive blue edition is identical in design, with the exception of the silver Goldspot logo versus the standard Kaweco logo. Protesters are fingerprint magnets, and this Kaweco is no different. Personally, fingerprints don’t bother me, but some pen addicts may feel differently.
The color of this Kaweco Sport is hard to photograph accurately, but it falls somewhere between traditional blue and navy in sunlight.
Aurora Optima Monviso 360 Fountain Pen Review
The cap-shaped Kaweco Sport fountain pen is three-quarters the length of a standard Lamy Safari fountain pen, making it a great choice for a pocket-friendly companion. The lid is clipped and requires one and a quarter turns to open the lid. The threads keep the pen tightly closed, and I could easily slip this pen into my pocket without fear of an ink drum later. When positioned, it fits comfortably between my thumb and index finger on the web, even though my hands are, let’s say, larger than average. The pen has the ability to rub. Although the pen does not come with a clip, Kaweco does sell a handy and sturdy slide.
The handle of the Kaweco Sport fountain pen is on the short and narrow side, although I wrote comfortably with it for long periods of time, even with my long fingers. The handle itself is smooth plastic, but the cover offers a little extra grip to keep it from slipping through your fingers.

Kaweco nibs are similar to western pens with wider nib sizes than their Japanese counterparts. I tested the Extra Fine nib for this review and it was a solid performer with no transitions or hard starts. However, I prefer the Kaweco Fine nib, which is a bit juicier.
