These phones aren’t the brand’s only releases for 2021 though; Earlier this year, Samsung launched the Galaxy A12, an entry-level smartphone with a quad camera setup, Helio P35 processor, and a large 5,000mAh battery.
It’s fair to say that Samsung specializes in making premium smartphones, but does that expertise extend to its more budget-friendly offerings? After all, it’s hard to make an entry-level device that can stand out, especially given the sheer amount of great budget phones on the market right now.

Test: Samsung Galaxy A12 (64 Gb)
Before anything else, let’s first look at the design of the A12. From the back, the A12 looks a bit plain in its black color, with only the Samsung logo and the phone’s quad camera setup worth noting. That’s not to say it’s a bad-looking phone, but it won’t stand out in a crowd if you get it in black.
A closer look (and a change in perspective) reveals that the back of the A12 has a two-tone matte finish. The upper 2/3 of the back has a molded finish that feels good in the hand. Meanwhile, the lower third has a smoother finish, which creates better contrast. While it looks pretty good for an entry-level phone, it doesn’t really feel very premium. On the plus side though, it feels sturdy enough that I would use it without a holster.
On the front, you can see the A12’s 6.5-inch display, with a water notch at the top for its 8MP selfie shooter. If you’ve used an Android phone released within the last year or two, this look is definitely familiar. But again, the A12’s looks aren’t bad, and should satisfy users who want a more frill-free device.
Talking about its display, the Galaxy A12 sports a 6.5-inch HD+ (720p) display. Unlike most Samsung phones with AMOLED screens, the A12’s display is a standard LCD screen. This, along with its 720p resolution, means the A12 doesn’t really offer the best viewing experience. While this is fine for a budget device, you shouldn’t expect it to look as good as high-end mid-range devices, especially those with vibrant AMOLED panels.

As for sound quality, the integrated speakers are serviceable, unless you expect mediocre sound quality. This means that for binge-watching or a better overall listening experience, external headphones/speakers are a must. So it’s good that the A12 has a headphone jack.
The phone is powered by the MediaTek Helio P35 – a fairly old processor by today’s standards, although our Samsung A12 review unit has 6GB of RAM (there’s also 4GB of RAM) to complement the chipset. So how does the A12 perform for gaming? This actually holds up well for popular mobile esports titles.
For less demanding games like Mobile Legends, the A12 had no problems, although the game defaulted to a medium graphics setting (which I recommend keeping). When playing slightly more hardware-intensive titles, you may need to lower the graphics settings, but the A12 should still work well.
However if you want to play more demanding games, the A12 might not have enough power. So if you want to play something like Genshin Effect, you’ll probably be disappointed.

The phone’s benchmark scores reflect this. In the 3DMark Sling Shot test, the A12 scored 710. Although the Wildlife benchmark was more demanding, the phone couldn’t handle it.
Moving on to the cameras, the Samsung Galaxy A12 packs a 48MP primary + 5MP ultra-wide angle + 2MP macro + 2MP depth sensor quad rear camera, as well as an 8MP front shooter. On paper, the cameras are great, but they aren’t the best for night photography.
For bright outdoor and indoor shots, the 48MP main shooter takes good photos with great detail. Of course, many phones today excel in these situations, and the result should come as no surprise.
However, image quality drops significantly at night. Photos taken at night with the main rear shooter can be blurry or lack detail. It doesn’t help that the A12 doesn’t have a dedicated night mode in its camera app. A bit disappointing, especially considering that other budget phones already include this feature.

The same can be said for its ultra-wide camera. For wide shots, the A12’s shooter is more than adequate for shooting outdoors or in well-lit interiors. Though again, low-light performance isn’t great, with images looking too dim and noisy.
As for its front-facing shooter, the Galaxy A12 is capable of taking good-quality selfies that are ready for social media, though the image quality of those selfies isn’t class-leading. Additionally, I found the beauty feature to be a little overpowered by default, so be aware of that when taking selfies.
The Samsung A12 performed well during our review, meaning it should hold up well in most use cases, including social media, email and word processing. Navigating the phone’s user interface can feel a bit slow at times, feeling like the phone could use a little more power (or optimization). On the other hand, at least the phone didn’t hang up or mess with it during my time.
If battery life is your priority, the Samsung Galaxy A12 won’t disappoint. Thanks to its 5,000mAh battery, the A12 will easily last you more than a day on a single charge. If you are frugal with your use, A12 can last up to two days.

Other cool features of the A12 include a USB Type-C port (always a favorite in budget smartphones), as well as its side-mounted fingerprint scanner.
On its own, our Samsung Galaxy A12 review says it’s a good budget smartphone. While it won’t be able to handle all the games out there, it performs well enough for light gaming and everyday use. The phone’s cameras are also pretty decent in good lighting conditions, and its battery life is excellent.
However, at PHP 9,990 for the 6GB model and PHP 7,990 for the 4GB, the A12 isn’t exactly the best value. Competition in the budget segment is fierce, meaning you can find phones that offer better value than the A12. However if you are planning to get a Samsung device because of its UI or design, you should look at the A12.

Samsung introduced its Galaxy A12 in November 2020 as a direct successor to the Galaxy A11 and it was launched in the US in April 2021. It was replaced by the Galaxy A13 series.
Samsung Galaxy A12 Android 12 Update Released, Brings Many New Features
The Galaxy A12 offers a total of six different configurations starting with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. However, only three are currently available in the United States (listed above). Whichever way you go, you’ll have access to four color options – red, blue, black and white.
Our Samsung Galaxy A12 came with Android 10 on board, although Samsung’s One UI 3.1 with Android 11 update is available via OTA. It also ran the July 1, 2021 Android security patch during testing. It should receive two years of software updates as well as four years of security patches, taking the Galaxy A12 to late 2024 or early 2025.
