This brings us to today’s review: Xiaomi’s new Mi TV Q1 75. Given my track record, if there is a Smart TV to do, that would be great.
Before I get too deep into this, though, I have to warn you that I’m not a TV buff. I’m coming from this is a first TV purchase, so if you’re thinking of some kind of detailed review that I hit the spider, it’s not.
However, I will point out a few interesting features that this TV comes with and let you know if it is worth your time and/or money.

On the other hand, this is a Smart TV that runs on Android TV 10 and can output 120Hz thanks to MEMC support. Being a Smart, it will also have support for 5GHz WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 and also 100Mbps Ethernet.
But you know, this is television, so I think the most important thing to start with is:
In short, it’s damn good. Xiaomi says it’s using Quantum Dot-based LED technology, but what that means in the grand scheme of things is beyond my level of knowledge. All I understand is that it is similar to Samsung’s QLED technology, and this has been made clear by Xiaomi’s products.
But I can tell you what my eyes saw and frankly they were pleased with what they saw. From a distance, the panel looks great, especially when using HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support.

During the review I mostly watched Netflix and YouTube content on this TV and I have to say that the Netflix content looks amazing. Deep blacks, good contrast and excellent viewing angles – the Mi TV Q1 feels like an upgrade to your standard TV or computer monitor.
There are times when I can see a bit of post-processing added by the TV to improve sharpness – especially old titles like Seinfeld – but from just watching TV, it’s little I can overlook.
Also, when you start shows that support Dolby Vision (DV), you can see a small warning in the top corner letting you know that Dolby Vision is open. This comes with several new settings and profiles specific to Dolby Vision.
I’m not sure if my untrained eye saw much of a difference between DV content and other content because I didn’t see the option to turn DV off. But I have to say, seeing that little pop up makes me feel like I’m going to see something special and it greatly improves visibility.

However, while I enjoy the Netflix viewing experience, YouTube content is more hit or miss. Although I do watch special content from channels that I know have great movies, I don’t think I get the same quality as Netflix products. I found I had to make a lot of menu changes to get a good experience, whereas the Netflix stuff was just a matter of pressing play and enjoying.
Another thing I don’t like is the smoothness of the 120Hz sound. You see, the Mi TV Q1 doesn’t natively support 4K 120Hz, instead relying on something called Motion Estimation. Motion Compensation Technology (MEMC) to “upscale” content up to 120Hz. And it’s a bit hit or miss.
I really don’t like it when watching TV content because I personally think that for anything that isn’t like sports, 24fps or 30fps is perfect. But even in dynamic sports content, 120Hz scaling doesn’t feel the same. Some of the movements were done with ease while others were relatively slower.
It makes the whole experience feel fake and acts as a distraction more than anything else. In theory, the game would be where this speed change is very good, but my colleague Hanif noted that in many games he tried, there was a noticeable lag on input with motion smoothness open.

The good news is that you can turn it off if you don’t like it, which isn’t a big deal to me. What I found is the big thing is the operating system itself:
I’m going to come right out and say it: Android TV is my favorite Smart TV interface. As someone who is a fan of stock Android and Windows without software, I don’t like Android TV. It’s very simple. It’s like I’m using the Linux equivalent of TV UX.
Work is usually all there is. And this is an operation I know well because I have a Mi Box at home which is plugged into my old TV. You can access your installed apps, you can set favourites, and in the case of the Mi TV Q1, the remote also gives you direct access to apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime in a special package.
But the thing about Android TV is that from the day I bought my Mi Box a few years ago to this Mi TV Q1, I don’t think the UX has changed a bit.

Compared to Samsung’s Tizen or LG’s WebOS, the Android TV experience just doesn’t cut it when it comes to how a modern TV should look and work. Maybe it’s all Android at its best, but simple things like picture adjustment can only be done in the menu, while Samsung’s Tizen, for example, has a quick bar for editing picture and sound.
I’d be willing to put him as a favorite though. In the end it works well, it works – I just think there are very simple solutions.
What I really find surprising is how slow the process is. For starters, loading takes an unreasonable amount of time. While my experience with Samsung TVs is almost instantaneous, the Mi TV Q1 75″ looks like it will last a long time.

Then you get lag time spikes when navigating through the interface. And perhaps worst of all, when you try to enter the menu or exit the 4K video, the TV also takes a while and a bit to respond.
Smooth isn’t what I’d use to describe the navigation experience, and that’s a bit disappointing because when it comes to responsiveness, this expensive TV is no different from my cheap Mi Box.
Xiaomi is not really a TV company like Samsung and LG. Also, it is very clear that the Mi TV Q1 75″ is designed for the price tag or not.
From regular TV viewing, the Mi TV looks pretty good. It has thin bezels all around and a very unobtrusive bezel. But, if you get up close, you start to see that the fit and finish could be a little better, and it’s not as pretty as it could be.

But what sticks out the best like a sore thumb is the eye. It’s like the TV is interrupting, coming out from under the lips. It’s also bright, so it can absorb light and reflect the weather.
Hanif believes that the stand still affects the sound quality of the TV speakers, but I personally think that the 30W (2x 15W) speakers are just not that special to begin with. They work well, but I think if you want a good sound experience, you’re better off investing in a speaker.
