Update Black Ballpoint Pens Review

Update Black Ballpoint Pens Review – I found this pen on Lammy’s site and thought to myself, “How did I not see this?” I thought. I bought this one in black on eBay, but I have an orange one (discontinued) that I found on clearance from Cult Pensin in the UK… more pics when it arrives.

The Lami Noto is truly an amazing pen! Although they are only made of plastic, the design makes them a really unique choice for a “cheap” pen. At $14 retail (I didn’t pay that much), it’s probably as close to a Lamy one-off as you’re going to get. A plastic tipo may be cheaper.

The shape of the barrel is triangular and I really like it. Most of what Lemmy does seems to border on cool and weird. I think this fine line, along with their relentless quality, makes them stand out as a brand that draws people in and keeps them coming back for more.

Lamy Scala Ballpoint Pen

This pen is very durable and the molded plastic is very tight. It doesn’t feel minimal or cheap. The kick doesn’t really have a “click” noise, but instead more of a click. However, it’s solid and responsive and doesn’t feel uncomfortable. The spring inside makes a slight squeak when tapped.

This pen is a Lamy M16 ballpoint pen, which is great. There’s a matching Monteverde soft-roll fill, which is an option even if the M16 isn’t your favorite. I don’t mind this fill as it seems to be written very consistently.

My only real concern with this pen is the clip. The plastic on the clip is very flexible and I think it will start to bend over time with use. Again, this might not be a big deal for a cheaper pen, but if Lamy decides to discontinue it entirely, it will limit the lifetime use of the pen for someone.

Overall, I’m very happy with it and can see myself recommending it as a desktop or everyday carry pen to someone who wants a unique and fun device that they can enjoy but not worry too much about. The Zebra bLen Ballpoint Pen is a brand new pen that has quickly risen to the top of many stationery lists. Now the new gel version of bLen is designed to compete with Pilot Juice, G2, EnerGels and Uno Signos that can be found on most store shelves.

At around $7 a pack of two pens, bLen is a great value compared to other gel pens that have been on stationery shelves for decades. The version I have uses a 0.7mm black gel fill that leaves a nice rich black line on the face.

According to marketing materials, the bLen provides an “innovative vibration-free writing experience” thanks to a “free noise-reducing internal system and a brass tip weight designed to lower the center of gravity.” The pen is quiet when writing, which means there are no rattles or other noises when you move the pen across the page. You can also feel the lower heaviness, which gives a better touch and makes it easier to hold the pen while writing.

These are good features, but I wouldn’t call them unique. I have many gel pens that are silent when writing, but they don’t describe silent operation in their marketing materials. Overall, this is a great opportunity, even if the marketing is a bit heavy.

It all boils down to simple questions that anyone can answer after a few seconds with each new pen: Does it write well and does it feel good in my hand?

The overall weight of the pen is very light and requires little effort to hold and operate it. The contoured grip is covered with a good-feeling silicone material. It is good that the pen makes zero noise or vibration during use.

The filler creates a smooth, matte line with crisp edges and it dries very quickly. In my tests, it doesn’t get dirty within 3 seconds. The 0.7mm nib size is pretty bold, and I’m happy that it dries quickly when you drop that much ink. I don’t usually go for the first black ink, but that’s exactly what I want from this black ink. It is thick, dark as night, and the line edges are crisp. It’s great.

The refill also came on right away and flowed continuously. No balls or skips with this filling. This is a really great filling.

Comparing this pen to other similar pens, it performs well. It works similarly, so it can be decided based on personal taste and availability. What I do know is that if you have the chance to get a Belen Zebra, you should. If you can’t find the package locally, you can get the package from Zebra or Amazon (US store affiliate link). No need to bury the lede with this one: the Cross TrackR Ballpoint exceeded my expectations. Not only is it a better writing pen than I expected, but the technology actually works.

The idea behind this pen is simple: it’s a good pen you won’t lose. Cross is the first writing brand to incorporate TrackR technology into the pen itself, which allows you to track whether the pen is left behind or separated from it.

As with any analog/digital crossover product, I was skeptical. It’s a simpler technology than handwriting conversion products like Moleskine’s smart writing kit, but as new technology is added to classic writing instruments, the potential for usefulness diminishes dramatically. Not the Cross TrackR.

The first thing that bothers me is the pen itself. It’s big—requires installing batteries and TrackR components—but very convenient. The metal barrel is lighter than expected and well balanced even with the extra hardware on top of the pen.

When I took the pen apart, I was surprised that the refill was only D1 size. It’s as small as a refill, but it makes sense for a pen because the refill area is limited to the bottom half of the pen. The cross-medium black ball refill is nice and the D1 size gives you other refill options, but I think a pen of this size would be better served with a larger capacity refill. This may not be technically possible.

To enable TrackR technology, you need to download the app to your iOS or Android phone. Setup is as simple as pairing a new Bluetooth device, and once connected, you can adjust notification settings as needed. In my tests, when I was 25 feet or more away from the pen, it started warning me. “Hey, don’t leave me behind!” The pen will beep until you pick it up and press the TrackR button, letting the app know it’s now in your hand.

If you’re worried about your pen constantly going off at home or in the office, don’t worry. The TrackR app has a Wi-Fi Safe Zones section that prevents notifications when you connect to fixed networks once connected.

If you are considering purchasing this pen for yourself or as a gift, there are a few things to keep in mind. One is the price. Not cheap at $95, but with the technology built in and the overall quality of the pen, I think it’s fair. The accompanying app is free to download and use. Second, it’s annoying. Includes hand-held batteries (backup kit supplied), low-capacity refill (extras also supplied) and installation app. This is much more than usual, take it and go to the pen.

That said, the Cross TrackR is a good pen. It’s a quality recording device – it should be top of the list of requirements – and for those who like that aspect, there’s the added benefit of TrackR technology. Overall, I’m very impressed and happy to have this pen in my arsenal.
