Perhaps this is where most of the changes will be noticed. Although the case, at first, is almost identical to the previous generation, the new Rolex Submariner Date 126610LV (and all 2020 update models) has changed completely. First, Rolex claims it’s made with a diameter of 41mm, a 1mm increase over the previous generation. In fact, this seems like a very simple way of looking at things. The submarine has grown a bit, but at the same time it has received a new shape to get rid of the so-called super-case.

According to our own measurements, the dimensions of the Submariner Date 126610LV remain unchanged. The truth is: the diameter is 40.5mm (not 41mm), it was 40.2mm in the previous generation. The thickness is kept at the same level, 12 mm. The lug-to-lug dimensions are also the same, at 47.6mm – which is very compact for a watch of its size and makes the Submariner a perfect fit for most wrists. But after reading this, you might wonder what’s new here.
The main development is about the lugs and the width of the bracelet. The way the lugs flow from the short side (at 3 and 9 o’clock) to the tip of the lugs feels very different. The so-called super-case from the previous generation gave the watch a square, bulky feel without the typical slimness of a submariner. Now, and mostly thanks to the increased width of the bracelet – it’s now 21mm compared to 20mm – the lugs are slimmer and can really be felt when looking at the watch. By shaving 0.5mm off the inner face, Rolex returned the Submariner to its original appearance. More flow, more curves, less bulk. And if the dimensions on paper are a bit large, the result on the wrist, thanks to the large bracelet and thin lugs, is the opposite, and now the Rolex Submariner Date feels smaller than before. Small tweaks that make a big difference.
The rest of the case, or at least the implementation and specifications, haven’t changed much. The Submariner still lives up to its spirit, being a capable diving watch but also a very luxurious sports watch. Made of Oystersteel (the internal name for the 904L stainless steel alloy used by the brand), the case combines a brushed surface on flat areas and polished accents on the sides. As with all modern models, there is no polished bevel on the sides of the lugs (sadly). The crown, called a triplock, screws down and is well protected by a lateral guard. The caseback is a simple piece of solid steel typical of a Rolex product. Both guarantee water resistance of 300m or 1000ft, suitable for recreational and professional diving (and if you want more, the Sea-Dweller and Deepsea answer your needs).
The top of the case is protected by a flat sapphire crystal, with the iconic “Cyclops” magnifier on the date. However, what is new to the Rolex Submariner Date 126610LV is the presence of an anti-reflective coating on the inside of the crystal (note that Rolex only started using AR coating in recent years). Thanks to the flat profile of the crystal and AR coating, the clarity most of the time is truly impressive.

The dial frame is a classic unidirectional diving bezel with 60-click movements. The Intuition Actuation is a real pleasure as a well-built object, with a sharp and pleasant quality. Also, once installed, the bezel stays put. At the top is a Cerachrome insert – the internal name for ceramic – engraved with a 60-minute scale (not all graduated – again this is reserved for the Sea-Dweller and Deepsea) and then PVD coated with platinum. A bright pearl is placed at the zero mark and the insert is polished. Available in black on the LN model, the green LV version you see here certainly adds an original and fun touch, while the color is subtle and discreet in the real world. It’s not the bright green you might see on the brand’s website, but a restrained green that makes this watch wearable every day. A small (and not noticeable) downside to this green bezel compared to the black model is that it offers slightly less contrast in some lighting conditions.
As for the dial, don’t expect too many differences between the Rolex Submariner Date 126610LV and its predecessor. Except for one important update: the green submarine only uses green for the bezel and the dial is now black, while the 116610LV Hulk has a green, sunray-brushed dial. Now, the dial is identical to the LN model with a glossy lacquered black background. Some people probably regret this style change, I think this version of “Starbucks” or “Cermit”.
