I’ll make it simple for you: The OLED Switch is the best Nintendo Switch out there, period. But your kids don’t care. Or at least mine doesn’t.
I learned this the hard way when I pulled down my OLED display switch to show my kids and got the cold shoulder of indifference. The little one wants a switch that he can fold up and put in his pocket. My older child thought it was prettier but also said it was fine with the switch it has. That’s the thing about the latest Switch update: The subtle updates are great, but they look even more like what the original Switch should have had in the first place.
The latest version of the Switch is the most expensive: $350, or $50 more than the original Switch. Deserve? For me. My children, no. But I’m old, my eyes are bad, and I like the idea of tabletop game consoles.

I bought a luxury Kindle Oasis in the middle of the pandemic. I already had a Kindle Paperwhite. I read a lot. The Oasis has a nicer, bigger screen. I do not regret. Switch OLED is like the Kindle Oasis of Switches.
This larger, more vibrant OLED display is clearly better. That’s why a lot of people (not me) have OLED TVs, and we’ve been talking about the benefits of OLED for phones for years. (One thing I still don’t know the answer to is whether there’s any concern about screen burn-in.) If you play a lot of Switch games in portable mode and want the best experience, this is it. And now that I’ve played it for a week, it’s clear that I like this Switch the most.
I’ve always wanted a Vectrex, an old game console from the 80s that had vector graphics and looked like a stand-alone mini arcade machine that you sat on a table. I used to put iPads in little mini arcade cabinets. I like the idea of retro countercade machines from Arcade1Up.

The Switch has two distinct game modes: handheld and connected to your TV. But there is one more. Tabletop mode means you use the Switch as a docked display and move around with the detachable Joy-Con controllers. This mod was generally bad with the original Switch because its thin stand is awful and only sits at an angle. The Switch’s original 6.2-inch screen is also better viewed from short distances, and tabletop games make it too small for split-screen co-op gaming.
The Switch’s 7-inch OLED screen is much brighter and can display finer game details more clearly. Also, the rear trunk has finally been improved. The extendable plastic mount spans almost the entire length of the body and can be adjusted to any subtle angle, from nearly vertical to flat. Like many iPad (or Microsoft Surface Pro) kickstand cases, this means it’s ultimately usable. It just makes sharing games on that screen more fun for games like Pikmin 3 or board games like Clubhouse Games.
Look, for multiplayer games, you’ll still want to connect to a TV. Table mode is really a third form of niche. But if you’re traveling with kids, you might end up getting a lot more than you thought (and apparently, it’s great for airline board games).
The OLED switch is slightly larger and heavier than the original switch. However, I was able to fit it into the basic carrying case I used for my old Switch. The slightly altered dimensions mean it won’t slip into the old Labo cardboard fold-out (in case you’re wondering) and probably won’t fit into other tighter accessories and cases. But so far it feels like using the old Switch, only better. Connecting the Joy-Cons to the sides won’t change, so that’s the point.

The larger 7-inch OLED screen is arguably better. Colors are more saturated, which works really well on Nintendo’s bright and bold games. The Metroid Dread I played on the OLED Switch looks great. Ditto Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Hades, Super Mario Odyssey, Untitled Goose Game, Zelda: Skyward Sword, WarioWare: Get It Together, and pretty much anything else I threw at it.
The frames are smaller and everything is more modern now. You can’t even see how much better the display looks in these photos (photos don’t tell the story of the display). But also, moving to a 7-inch screen is not a quantum leap experience.
For example, the latest iPad Mini has a larger screen. The 7-inch screen looks better for all games, but sometimes it’s still too small for me and my tablet-based life. The 720p resolution is low for a 7-inch display, but I never noticed that much.

One thing I do know: I don’t want to go back to my old Switch right now. The display looks smaller and obviously worse, and the OLED screen is already killing me.

The new Switch OLED dock now has an Ethernet jack for wired internet connections, which isn’t anything I need, but it’s useful just in case, I guess. This jack means that one internal USB 3 port has been removed, but there are still two external USB 3 ports. The rear docking cover is easier for cable access than the hinged door was. The dock is just for connecting the Switch to the TV, so if you’re just a handheld gamer, that’s what that weird box with a slot in it is for.
But the new Switch also works in older Switch docks. The new dock isn’t really new. (However, new docks may receive updated firmware — which could mean new features, but it’s hard to tell at this point.)

The Switch OLED can use any pair of Switch Joy-Cons as usual. That’s great news, except the Joy-Cons that come with the new Switch are no different. I got to try the new black and white model with its white Joy-Cons, but apart from the color change, they have exactly the same features – and exactly the same feel. The Joy-Cons, in my opinion, felt quite dated compared to the solid and comfortable Xbox and PS5 controllers. I wanted analog triggers, a better analog stick, less bluetooth lag. And who knows if these seemingly similar Joy-Cons break as easily as the older ones.

The fan on my old switch sounds like a car engine: I think the fan is broken or damaged. The OLED Switch, until now, seemed much quieter. There is still a vent on the top, but I didn’t notice that much noise.

The 64GB of base storage on the Switch OLED is up from the 32GB that older switches had, which is nice. I downloaded 13 games before filling up: Digital Switch games range from a few hundred megabytes to 10GB, but take up less space than PS5 or Xbox games. Still, there’s a microSD card slot on the Switch, as always, and storage is cheap. Using an additional storage unit does not require any special configuration or lock-in to specific brands, unlike the PS5 and Xbox Series X memory expansions.
It’s clear to me that the OLED switch is the best switch based on specs alone. But that slightly bigger and brighter screen, those better speakers, that slightly different dock and, of course, the very nice new kickstand don’t quite add up
