Update Best Touch Screen Watches Review – Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro review: The best Android watch gets a modest update until we see the Pixel Watch in action, Samsung’s Wear OS watch.

The best non-Apple smartwatch for a long time is the Samsung Galaxy Watch series, thanks to its comprehensive health and fitness tracking, intuitive interface, and comfortable, flattering design. For such a mature product, it’s hard to imagine what else Samsung could improve, which could explain why the Galaxy Watch 5 is so similar to its predecessor. It costs up to $280 to get started.

Many of the changes here aren’t immediately visible, like a more durable build, a passive temperature sensor, and better battery life. Samsung also launched a new Pro model for $450, which comes in a 45mm titanium frame, uses a beefier display, and comes with a large 590mAh battery that promises up to 80 hours of battery life. However, just because these tweaks are small doesn’t mean the Galaxy Watch 5 can’t still be the best smartwatch available for Android users.

Like I said, the Galaxy Watch 5 looks exactly like its predecessor and comes in the previous 40mm and 44mm sizes. Both are a few grams (or less than a quarter of an ounce) heavier than the previous generation, but it’s barely noticeable. The lack of changes isn’t a bad thing ā€” the Galaxy Watch’s rounded face and minimalist design make it look more like a regular watch than the Apple Watch.

My 40mm review unit has a silver bezel, although black and rose gold are also available, while the 44mm model is available in silver, black, or sapphire. I also got a comfortable purple silicone bracelet, which is more sensual than pretty. If you want something better, you can easily change the bands.

It’s not immediately obvious, but Samsung used a more durable sapphire crystal glass for the 5 o’clock display. I’ve yet to wear a smartwatch, even during my brutal workout sessions, but lately I’ve been grateful for the backup during my workouts. I had forgotten the Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro on my wrists and swung a pair of 26-pound kettlebells behind my arms. Fortunately, none of the machines got scratched and I continued to stack the weights while doing two more sets. To be fair, I did the same exercise with the Apple Watch and it didn’t hurt either.

Like its predecessors, the Watch 5 is IP68, 5 ATM and MIL-STD-810H rated for durability (water, dust and pressure resistant). I recently used it while swimming, and while it wasn’t as accurate as the Apple Watch on laps, at least it survived. Those who liked Samsung’s bezel-based navigation will appreciate the screen’s touch-sensitive ring that you can use to navigate the Wear OS interface, as well as the smooth haptic feedback while navigating apps. I still prefer a physical rotating bezel, but I understand that not everyone wants the extra bulk.

One of the main differences Samsung brought to the Watch 5 is the subtle curve of its bottom surface. This keeps the watch in greater contact with the wrist, so its sensors can provide more reliable readings. Unfortunately, I found this a bit frustrating. Both the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro left round marks on my wrist after removing them, no matter how much I adjusted the fit.

It was a bit annoying, and I put up with it because I thought I would get more reliable scans in return. But I found that the Galaxy Watch 5 consistently gave me almost exactly the same reading as the Apple Watch Series 7 on the other wrist, and the latter never felt as stiff. Another reviewer I spoke to said they found the Watch 5 very comfortable, so this could be a matter of personal preference.

This also applies to wearing a watch to bed – some people don’t mind it, some people hate it. I’m in the latter camp, but I still used the Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch to bed to compare their sleep tracking tools. As I said before, Apple’s system is brutal. Before the device tells you that you’re sleeping, you need to set your sleep schedule or turn on sleep focus. Even so, it doesn’t really know if you’re awake or passed out. Samsung can figure everything out on its own.

One night I placed both clocks on the bed, just before turning over and closing my eyes to note the time. The Galaxy Watch 5 accurately detected that I went to sleep around 1:30 am and woke up at 4 am, whereas Apple simply told me I had a full night’s rest from 11 pm to 9 am.

I could rage about how Apple can’t do what Fitbit and Samsung were able to do years ago, but this isn’t a watchOS review. Like Fitbit watches, the Galaxy Watch 5 also uses heart rate data to measure your sleep zones and tell you how long you spent in REM, deep, or light sleep. Meanwhile, the feature is expected to come with the upcoming watchOS 9.

Sleep tracking isn’t new to the Galaxy Watch 5, but Samsung has added a sleep coaching tool that will supposedly guide you to better rest. However, it takes 5 weekdays and 2 weekend nights of data before generating tips, and I haven’t logged that many hours yet. Plus, my data gets skewed anyway ā€“ I sleep horribly whenever I use any sleep accessory. This could be an enlightening feature, but I can’t say right now.

Another thing I can’t assess at this point is whether the skin temperature sensor that Samsung introduced in the Galaxy Watch 5 will be useful, as it currently doesn’t do anything. However, there are many potentially useful applications for this data, so it will be interesting to see what the company can do with this data.

Samsung has also long been better at tracking your activity than most Wear OS watches, and the Watch 5 is no different. When I was stuck at my desk for hours writing this review, it reminded me to get up and move. I’ve always appreciated that in addition to walking, Galaxy watches also suggest activities you can do at your desk, like spins or push-ups. Even better, the device can track exactly how many rounds you’ve done ā€“ something the Apple Watch and other Wear OS devices can’t do.

Overall, the Samsung system is more active than ever. When I got up after the Watch 5 asked me to walk, after taking about ten steps to congratulate myself on the change, the device beeped. That’s way below Apple’s requirements, which can make me feel like I’m freaking out about having to tidy up my room.

Galaxy watches are also quicker to detect when you’re moving and ask if you want to log your walk. The flip side is that they are also hyper-aware of when you stop, not only suspending tracking but also beeping to let you know when you’ve stopped.

Aside from the sleep training feature, there isn’t much difference between the Watch 4 and the Watch 5 when it comes to software. You can even read body composition, take an ECG scan, respond to messages, control music playback, and more using the built-in Body Impedance Analysis (BIA) tool. The Watch 5 also uses the same 5nm Exynos processor as the older model and was just as responsive for the most part. I actually had to wait when creating new watch faces or running a body fat scan – otherwise everything happened the moment I tapped the screen.

If you think about the accuracy of the Watch 5’s body composition measurements, it’s surprisingly close to results from more sophisticated systems. I recently tried an InBody scan, which is a more advanced version of BIA like the one on the Watch 5. Samsung’s readings of my body fat percentage and less than a pound under my skeletal muscle, calculated by the InBody version, were just a drop of around 2%.

I actually forgot that the Watch 5 is a Wear OS device as the software is still very similar to Tizen. Aside from swiping up and down on the home screen to access all apps and settings, most of the side-swipe interface is no different from Samsung’s original operating system.

One thing I wish Wear OS/Tizen did better is displaying workout information. Apple uses a large, bold font to show workout duration, heart rate, and calories burned. Samsung displays similar information but uses a much thinner and smaller font. When my 5 o’clock face got locked while swimming and
