The Galaxy S21 Ultra is Samsung’s new superphone for 2021, and it’s firmly positioned as the best of its kind at a price to match.

The 6.8-inch display is slightly smaller than last year’s Note 20 Ultra and S20 Ultra, but it’s sharp, rich in color and super bright. If you want big-screen entertainment in your pocket, its 120Hz refresh rate (twice that of an iPhone) makes scrolling through sources easy.
The S21 Ultra is a very large and relatively heavy phone, putting it in competition with the Note 20 Ultra and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. You could use it with one hand, but most people need two hands to use it safely without using some sort of phone grip.

The S21 Ultra ships with Samsung’s recently released Exynos 2100 processor in Europe (as tested) or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 in the US. Both the variants come with 12GB or 16GB of RAM depending on the model.
The entire performance was excellent. The S21 Ultra is noticeably faster than last year’s Note 20 Ultra; From unlocking your phone to launching apps, every action happens a little faster.
Battery life is also strong. The phone easily survives a full day of heavy use. I get over 35 hours between charges with my normal usage, which includes chat apps, Chrome, Gmail, Evernote, Guardian, spread over 5.5 hours of screen time between 7am on the 1st and 6am of day 2. Spotify and many others, taking about 15 photos and spending about three hours on 5G, the rest on Wi-Fi.

That’s longer than the Note 20 Ultra’s 30-hour battery, but slightly less than last year’s S20 Ultra and well behind the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s 48-hour battery. Changing the screen from the default 120Hz dynamic refresh rate and FHD+ resolution to the higher QHD+ resolution reduced battery life by a couple of hours.
Samsung does not estimate the number of full charge cycles the battery should last. Batteries in similar devices typically last up to 500 cycles while retaining at least 80% of their original capacity.
The phone is usually repairable and comes with a 24-month warranty. The screen repair on its predecessor, the S20 Ultra, cost £269. The battery can be replaced by authorized service centers for no more than £59.
Samsung offers trade-in and recycling programs for old devices, but the smartphone doesn’t come with any recycling materials. The company publishes annual sustainability reports but not individual product impact assessments.

The S21 Ultra is one of the first smartphones to run Samsung’s latest version of Android 11 called One UI 3.1.
It inherits most of the new features of Android 11: isolation of conversations, media and other alerts in the notification shade; dialog bubbles; and additional privacy controls over location and other permissions.

The new partnership between Samsung and Google brings the search company’s Discover feed and Messages text messaging to the S21 series. There are also several Microsoft apps and systems for linking data and apps to Windows 10, which work well.
There’s a bit of app duplication, including two different SMS apps called “Messages,” one made by Samsung and one by Google, but overall the 3.1 UI is one of the most refined and best-customized versions of Android yet.
Samsung has committed to support at least three major Android version updates and four years of monthly security patches, which is great for Android devices, but pales in comparison to Apple’s five-plus years of support for its phones.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus Review
The S21 Ultra is Samsung’s first smartphone to feature a new quad camera setup with 12MP wide-angle, 108MP standard wide, and not one, but two 10MP telephoto cameras, one with 3x and 10x optical zoom.
It’s one of the most flexible camera systems available, with all but last year’s Huawei P40 Pro Plus extended. The main camera takes better photos with improved low-light performance and better processing than last year’s S20 Ultra. The ultra-wide camera is great in bright light, but it can start to look a little dark and too sharp compared to the main camera in low light levels.
Both the 3x and 10x cameras produce nice, sharp images even in the relatively dim light of stormy environments. The 3x camera is ideal for zooming in on people and other objects a few meters away, while the 10x magnification allows you to significantly close the distance to subjects significantly further away.
The camera system can smoothly zoom from 1x to 10x magnification using hybrid and optical zoom from a combination of cameras with impressive results.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5g Review: Design, Build, Handling
In addition to the 10x zoom, Samsung’s “Space Zoom” system applies a digital zoom to the 10x telephoto camera. Photos taken up to 30x are very good. Taking a maximum zoom of 100x clearly stretched images artificially, but it’s still a significant improvement over the 100x zoom of previous Samsung smartphones. A new “Zoom Lock” system helps stabilize your handshake by 30 times or more. Tap the tiny preview window and the phone will lock onto a patch of the image, turning an often blurry mess into a surprisingly sharp image.

Samsung’s night and portrait modes have also been improved. A new macro mode that Samsung calls “focus enhancer” uses the ultra-wide camera to produce really sharp and cool images. The single shot function to capture videos, photos and produce animations at the same time is a lot of fun and now it’s faster and smarter. The 40-megapixel selfie camera is also the best available.
The cameras record excellent video up to 8K with a number of useful tools such as “Director View”, which shows you the view from three rear cameras and selfie simultaneously. Samsung leads Android rivals in video.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Long Term Review: Still One Of The Best
All the usual high quality elements are there. The screen is great, performance is good, battery life is great, and the software is the latest available. But it’s the more advanced fingerprint scanner that makes the biggest difference for everyday use: it’s fast, accurate and responsive in a way that previous Samsung efforts haven’t been.
The new dual-telephoto camera system is a significant improvement, providing flexibility and levels of optical zoom that you won’t get with other major competitors.
Samsung offers at least three years of major software updates, matching the best Android rivals but falling short of Apple’s five years of iOS updates.
If you want the best Android superphone, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is the one to beat this year.
