As component prices have skyrocketed over the past few years, we’ve seen budget phones move away from midrange processors to cheaper, less reliable options. The N20 5G bucks that trend, running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor, which is more powerful than the MediaTek chip in the Galaxy A14 5G. The N20 5G also has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, faster than the Galaxy A14 5G or Galaxy A03s, and a microSD card slot. Loading complex web pages, running 3D games, and installing and launching apps is a better experience on the N20 5G than on other 2022 budget phones, with the exception of Google’s more expensive Pixel 6a. The N20 5G also has NFC for mobile payments, a feature often missing from budget phones.
1080p display resolution used to be common on sub-$300 phones, but supply chain issues related to the pandemic have made it rare these days. On the N20 5G, OnePlus offers a decent 1080p OLED screen that’s noticeably sharper than the 720p LCD on the Galaxy A13 5G, though it’s not as bright or vibrant as the OLED on the Pixel 6a. The N20 5G’s display is limited to a 60 Hz refresh rate, lower than the A14 5G’s 90 Hz refresh rate. However, the N20 5G easily maintains its 60 Hz refresh rate during operation, and the A14 5G sometimes drops below 90 Hz, making its primary advantage less useful. And resolution is more important than refresh rate on phones in this price range.
The 4,500 mAh battery is enough to keep the N20 5G going all day, no matter how hard you try. Up to two days per charge is possible depending on your usage, and this phone’s 33 W charging is twice as fast as the A14 5G (15 W). The N20 5G even beats the Pixel 6a (18 W) in this regard. A full charge takes less than an hour. It’s also nice to see the N20 5G ships with a cable and charger, as most 2022 phones don’t.
