Samsung has been pushing LED-backlit LCD TVs with quantum dots for years, while largely ignoring OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology. But now the company has combined the two to create the visually stunning S95B TV line. Notably, this new entry offers the highest brightness we’ve seen from an OLED model, complemented by top-notch color performance. However, using quantum dots on an OLED panel makes it much more complicated to judge what perfect black levels should be. And at $2,999.99 for the 65-inch model we tested, it’s more expensive than the Editors’ Choice-winning LG C2 Evo OLED TV ($2,499.99 for a 65-inch model), which offers colors that being almost as good, while delivering deep black levels we’ve come to expect from OLED.

As both an OLED TV and Samsung’s flagship model, the S95B is unsurprisingly elegant and attractive. A thin black bezel (just a quarter of an inch thick) frames the active screen, and a thin strip of gray metal runs along the edges. The sole edge, a narrow strip of slightly darker metallic material, outlines the underside, while small protrusions in the center and near the bottom right corner house the TV’s far-field microphone and infrared sensor, respectively. The S95B stands on a 14-inch-wide rectangular metal base, but you can also mount it on the wall.

Essentially, OLED TVs are supposed to have “infinite” contrast, as the technology allows each pixel to turn on and off and get brighter or dimmer, resulting in perfect black levels. However, this is not the case with the S95B. Because it uses quantum dots to enhance color, the panel’s black levels don’t look quite black in most situations. While parts of the screen in an isolated environment don’t actually emit light, the quantum dot layer seems to respond to even the tiniest bit of ambient light, such as from other parts of the screen itself or even reflections from the glass part of the screen. panel. The dark areas of the screen still look very dark, but not to the level we expect from OLED panels. However, we cannot actually measure the value of the black level here because it is technically completely dark if no light is present.

The tables above show the color levels of the S95B right out of the box in film mode, with an SDR signal compared to Rec.709 broadcast standards and with an HDR signal compared to DCI-P3 digital cinema standards. In either case, they’re about as perfect as we’ve ever seen. All SDR colors are perfect, as are all HDR primaries. Cyan, magenta and yellow float very little, but are still very accurate. The color performance is very similar to the LG C2, with greens stretching just a little further to ideal saturation levels and secondary colors slightly less clear.

Looks fantastic on the S95B. Colors, such as the green of plants and blue in water, look natural, varied and vibrant. Fine details such as fur and bark are highly visible in both light and shadow scenes, while shadows look sufficiently dark, with clear textures. The picture is also remarkably bright for an OLED panel (with peak brightness set to high) compared to high-end LED TVs.
