After being extremely impressed with the new mid-range phones from Google and Apple, we decided to take a look at the competition. The Galaxy A51 is Samsung’s answer to mid-range models like the iPhone SE and Pixel 3a. And it’s… well, it’s an extremely “Samsung” phone, if that makes any sense.

The point is, the phone revels in Samsung’s overall approach of providing every possible feature to the user. It’s more than simply promoting itself and showcasing branded services – which pretty much every phone does these days. There’s so much going on in this $300-400 phone that trying to do most things is more complicated than it needs to be.

The A51’s hardware is pretty solid, and in theory it’s a great deal, especially compared to Samsung’s Galaxy S series. The display and storage are particular highlights. But once you start using it, you’ll find that the phone does almost nothing better than the competition – low memory and a large amount of clunky software make your jumpers a bit poor.
It’s acceptable if you’re heavily invested in Samsung as a brand and platform, but otherwise a similarly priced iPhone or Pixel would be a better choice.
This is pretty respectable hardware for this price, especially considering it has a large, thin-bezel AMOLED display with a punch-hole camera and an in-display fingerprint reader. Standard storage capacity of 128GB is also unusual in this segment of the market. At this price, you don’t get extras like wireless charging or water resistance (unless you buy the iPhone SE).
One thing that amazes me about this phone is how beautiful it is. In addition to the screen and its attractive symmetry, the back is multifaceted, multi-textured, multi-colored under the glass, giving it a dark and attractive appearance that contrasts nicely with the curve of the device itself. bag.
Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: Even A Mid Range Phone Can Feel Like A Flagship
On hand, the A51 looks more or less similar to any larger phone released recently. At 6.5 inches, it’s not the biggest phone out there, but it’s bigger and heavier. With the rounded edges and curved glass on the back, it felt like it was about to slip out of my hand… but that never happened, so what do I know? Even so, I would still like to see some kind of texture on the side.
The layout is pretty straightforward, with Samsung’s standard source below the right volume. The phone has a headphone jack at the bottom, where the mono speaker is located. You’ll use the former more often than you would on other phones, as the speakers are very muddy. It’s loud enough to hear voices in an average-sized room, but not much more than that. I’ve slept through multiple alarms on this, though I’m a pretty heavy sleeper, so take it for what it’s worth.
The rear camera module – four, count four, sensor and lens plus LED – mimics the setup of the Galaxy S20 series, although its imaging capabilities are not on par with expensive companions more money. There’s no fingerprint sensor on the back, but I’d really like one.
The in-display fingerprint reader is easily the worst feature of the A51. It’s clearly an older design compared to the newer, faster, more pleasing sensors seen in the S20 and OnePlus 8 series. Normally, it takes me several tries to successfully unlock and about a fraction of it. three times, I’ll give up and use my model. It’s a step backwards, not only compared to mid-range rivals but also Samsung’s older designs with fingerprint readers on the back of the device.

This is a great example of form rather than function and is something buyers in this range will particularly dislike seeing. I’d trade those elaborate fingerprint scanners for wireless charging, water resistance, or stereo speakers. I hope Samsung does this in the next release.
On the other end of the spectrum, the display is fantastic. It’s Samsung’s usual bright, oversaturated AMOLED panel, with small bezels and an unobtrusive pinhole camera in the center. It’s not the highest resolution panel in the world, especially at 6.5 inches, but I think it’s probably the best possible display in this price range. If having a big, beautiful panel is important to you, that might be enough to put the Galaxy A51 ahead of the competition.
The octa-core processor (four main Cortex cores and four sub Cortex cores) handles most tasks with ease. Of course, it’s not as fast as a flagship phone, but it doesn’t have to be. I can browse the web, email and Slack messages relatively quickly and enjoy some 3D games like
I wish I could say the same for RAM. I found 4GB of memory to be enough on my Pixel 3a XL everyday control phone, but it’s a Pixel phone, running a relatively simple version of Android right out of the box at Google. On the Galaxy A51, the same amount of storage simply doesn’t go that far, as Samsung has a large number of programs and processes running in the background. See the Software section below for more info on bloatware, but suffice it to say that you have to get used to how apps take a few extra seconds to load, even if you only used them 10 minutes ago.

If the RAM is not enough, at least the storage space is abundant. Samsung’s massive software compilation takes up almost 30GB of the 128GB onboard, which is awesome. But you can add an inexpensive MicroSD card to increase the storage up to 512GB. This support is still Samsung’s trademark feature among the “big three”, at every price point, so it’s clearly a win over the competition.
Oh. After a few years of using the Galaxy Note 8, I think Samsung has taken a softer approach when it comes to the heavily modified and cross-branded version of Android. But based on the Galaxy A51, I’d say Samsung is going back to bad habits.
I could carefully list all the extra and essential apps that Samsung fills this phone with. But instead, I will say that during my review period, I received a message asking me to restart my phone because I have been doing so for 7 days now.
Correct. Samsung knows that there is a lot of software on this phone to keep it running smoothly on a regular basis. And instead of solving this problem by reducing the UI or the app list, they came up with a new process to require you to restart your phone once a week… making the problem worse should be a little worse. That’s an extremely Samsung thing to do.

The Settings menu has been redesigned in unnecessary ways. The quick tools in the notification bar are full of items like “Link with Windows” (a built-in Microsoft-branded application), “Dolby Atmos” and “Bixby Routines”. Even the power button defaults to launching Bixby instead of the power button menu. It seems the company is almost defaming its users for not accepting Bixby when it has its own button. Extremely Samsung.
Application? Oh yes, we have apps. This phone installed tons of third-party bloatware, presumably to increase hardware margins. At a glance I can see a slot machine app, Amazon and Walmart, Pluto TV, the official NBA app,
Most of these problems can be solved if you really want to. Bixby heavyweight launcher can be replaced with Nova Can remove the navigation bar. You can even use a third-party tool to disable many of these unnecessary processes at launch. (Now that I think about it, I also had to go through this Ultra Samsung process on my Note 8.) But after using the Pixel 3a XL and especially the OnePlus 8, with its clean and intuitive interface going to be meticulous, it seems a burden you have to do it.
I think some people will be willing to ignore that. Specifically, people who love beautiful screens or expandable memory options or who invest heavily in the Samsung and Galaxy brands. (Yes, yes!) But I also think it’s a pretty small part of the market and a lot thinner than usual in this price range.

Oh, and we bought the AT&T variant of the phone for this review, which comes with more bloatware — at least a dozen apps exclusive to AT&T and DirecTV. This isn’t Samsung’s fault, but it’s something you should know: choose an unlocked model if possible.
