Canon’s mirrorless range has undergone a dramatic reinvention in the last five years, from sitting in the shadow of some flagship DSLRs to far surpassing it. The arrival of the EOS R series in 2018 changed everything and told the world that Canon was betting the house on mirrorless going forward. While the company still makes and sells DSLRs, it’s pretty clear that all new cameras will be mirrorless from now on.
Canon mirrorless cameras until recently were divided into two series. First, there is the EOS R series, which includes a flagship pro camera and an entry-level model for beginners, as well as many cameras in between. Another option is the EOS M series of slim and light APS-C cameras. But while this is still available and supported by a decent range of lenses, it is clear that Canon will switch completely to the new APS-C EOS R models, including the EOS R100, EOS R50, EOS R10 and EOS R7.
It’s all about lens fit. These newer models use the same RF lens mount as Canon’s full-frame cameras, while the older EOS M models used the EOS M mount, which we believe will be phased out. Choosing a mirrorless camera can be a daunting task, especially if it’s your first time. So before we get into the list, let’s take a look at the key specs to consider when choosing the best Canon mirrorless camera.
Best Canon Dslrs Under $1,500 Of 2023
Sensor and resolution: Canon mirrorless cameras offer full-frame or APS-C sensors. Simply put, full frame tends to provide better image quality in some situations, especially low light, while APS-C provides a smaller system overall and can be useful for certain subjects such as wildlife. Read our full guide to APS-C for more on the main differences between the two. Resolution is also something to consider – it’s not always the case that more pixels are better. Whether you need very high resolution may depend on the type of subject you are photographing.
Screens and viewfinders: All of the cameras on our list include rear screens, but most (but not all) also include electronic viewfinders. Think about whether you want an articulating or tilting screen (which works for writing from an awkward angle, as well as for video). For the viewfinder, you should pay attention to the resolution and size.
Image stabilization: Canon’s first mirrorless cameras with in-body stabilization are coming in 2020 – the EOS R5 and EOS R6. Since then, the sports flagship EOS R3 has also been included, although you don’t get IBIS with Canon’s APS-C format cameras. Image stabilization is not important, as many Canon lenses also have IS (Image Stabilization) built in. But it’s definitely useful for people who prefer to shoot handheld rather than using a tripod.
Frame rate: To photograph fast-moving subjects like sports and wildlife, you need a camera with a fast frame rate. Some cameras in the EOS R and EOS M range will give you up to 30 fps (frames per second). This will be less important to you if you shoot static or near-static subjects, such as landscapes or portraits.

Video: All cameras on this list can record 4K video. Other video-related specs to consider include whether cropping applies to 4K, frame rate, and custom video modes.
Lens selection: Canon’s two mirrorless lines (R and M) use different lens mounts, and the lenses between them are not interchangeable. Although older, the EF-M lens for the M series has never been discontinued, with only 8 lenses available. In contrast, there are currently 30 lenses built into the RF, although only three are specifically designed for the smaller APS-C models.

The original Canon EOS R6 was a huge hit with many users and reviewers (including us). It was a quieter launch than the EOS R5, but it could have been a more successful launch with a lower resolution sensor at a lower price. This is a typical full frame – and now the EOS R6 Mark II is built on that formula.
The biggest addition is the new 24.2 MP Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, which increases the resolution from a rather stingy 20 MP compared to the original. It’s not the type of stack we saw on the EOS R3, which means you won’t get super-fast reading speeds, but it’s optimized to deliver exceptional exposure performance with a standard ISO ceiling of 102,400 expandable to 204,800 and support for autofocus at light levels down to -6.5EV.
However, the EOS R6 Mark II inherits one thing from the EOS R3 – a very powerful subject detection autofocus that can lock onto specific targets, everything from people and animals to cars and trains. It gives real versatility as a photographer. After finishing our Canon EOS R6 Mark II review, we can safely say that this is one of the most versatile cameras you can buy.
If speed is your main concern, then you can’t go wrong with the Canon EOS R3 – as long as you have the budget to buy it. It includes super-fast specs, including recording up to 30 fps (using the electronic shutter), as well as a world-record top shutter speed of 1/64,000 seconds.
Top 10 Cameras For Beginners
The full-frame sensor offers 24 megapixels, which certainly sounds low compared to some other models – especially from other manufacturers – but Canon suggests this is a deliberate choice to provide the best balance between image quality, file size and speed – and in practice deliver.

If you’re looking for a real workhorse of a camera, one that can tackle many different subjects with conviction, then the Canon EOS R5 is a good choice.
Canon Eos M100 Mirrorless Camera Review: Good For Novices
Combining a 45 million pixel sensor with up to 20 fps recording, you get a great mix of speed and resolution. Whether you’re shooting landscapes, portraits or sports/action, the R5 should perform well.
Focus – while not quite on par with the R3 – is still very reliable, with fast focus acquisition and the ability to track multiple subjects. Eye registration is also useful for portraits – people and animals.
Videographers will also love the R5 as it offers a great range of video specs – including up to 8K recording. But as mentioned in the full review, and discussed at length at the time, there are significant limitations – heat build-up and cooldown times that prevent you from recording 8K or 4K 120p for more than 20 minutes at a time.
At lower resolutions or frame rates, there is no such problem, but it should still be taken into account before choosing the EOS R5 as your main camcorder. Canon quickly brought out an alternative, the EOS R5C, with a redesigned cooling system, so video users should consider this option first.
