But the good news is that even budget TVs look great if you want the basics.
If you don’t plan on playing video games or watching Blu-ray discs, you probably don’t need a TV with a 120Hz refresh rate, which adds to the price.
And if your room is particularly bright, you should choose a premium LCD TV, because such models are brighter than inexpensive LCD TVs or OLED TVs.
Knowing some of these basics before you start shopping can make the process easier and narrow down your viable options.

Why we love it: Hisense U8H has all the advanced TV technology we want to see – quantum dots for rich color saturation, mini-LED backlighting with ambient dimming for improved black levels and overall contrast, and a 120Hz refresh rate for improved motion – and it’s highly usable. This LCD TV does a good job with HDR video, thanks to good color saturation and impressively high brightness: we measured an average brightness of 1,500 nits, with peaks north of 1,800 nits, which is about as high as you’ll get. Other TVs at this price. The U8H has all the necessary features to succeed as a gaming monitor, with dual wideband HDMI 2.1 inputs for 4K 120Hz gaming from the latest Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Weaknesses, but not dealbreakers: Hisense’s video processing doesn’t meet Sony or Samsung’s standards, so an eagle-eyed videographer may notice banding and scaling errors in some video and game content. Viewing angles are only average, and this series is only available on 55-, 65-, and 75-inch screens. If you don’t want to spend more money for better video processing or want a different screen size than the U8H offers, consider the Samsung QN90B instead. Compared to the Hiense U8H in both its smaller (43.50-inch) and larger (85.98-inch) sizes, the QN90B is slightly brighter and produces a cleaner, more subdued image that videographers will appreciate.
Hisense U8H offers great picture quality, great gaming features and Google TV interface, but it has a narrower viewing angle and smaller screen size than other TVs.
Why we love it: The 2022 TCL 5-Series (S555) delivers a gorgeous 4K HDR picture with better brightness than the competition and is available in 50-, 55-, 65- and 75-inch sizes. Most parts. It’s the company’s cheapest TV series, featuring advanced LCD technologies such as full-range local dimming LED backlights that improve image contrast and quantum dots for rich color and supports Dolby Vision HDR and the latest advanced gaming features. If the refresh rate is a deal breaker for you, consider spending a little more on the new 2022 TCL 6 Series, which is a significant upgrade over the 5 Series. Why we love it: The Samsung S95B uses QD-OLED technology, a new-for-2022 technology that combines the best features of OLED TVs – perfect black levels, wide viewing angles and an ultra-sleek design – with the power of quantum color enhancement. . Why we love it: The TCL 32S334 is a great little smart TV that you can quickly and easily set up and use anywhere. It offers good picture and sound quality, and the built-in Android TV smart-TV platform supports all major video and music services. We like Android TV’s customizable interface, and the remote control is simple but not too simple, with useful buttons and a microphone for voice search. Bluetooth audio output lets you wirelessly send TV audio to headphones or speakers, and you can choose a wired or wireless network connection for streaming.
Flaws aren’t deal breakers: None of the 32-inch TVs we tested excelled in the brightness department, and their LCD panels don’t include anti-glare technology to improve image contrast — so they’re not a good choice for bright rooms. The 32S334’s viewing angles are average, and the 720p resolution isn’t ideal for close-ups like desk work or gaming. If you want 1080p resolution or prefer the Roku smart TV platform, consider the TCL S327 as a second choice.
The 32S334 is a great compact TV that offers good performance, a solid smart TV platform, and useful features like voice search and Bluetooth audio output.
