I’ve found Fineliners (and ballpoint pens) to be the least prone to ghosting and bleeding. Also, since you don’t have to put too much pressure on fine line pens, they usually don’t leave a line on the back
Don’t let the tip size put you off. For gel pens, I definitely recommend keeping this in mind (I prefer 0.7mm), but I find that fineliners end up looking and writing pretty much the same regardless of their thickness. I usually stay away from 0.3mm, but the Staedtler Triplus (which is 0.3mm) looks like a thicker nib.

Notice how the Stabilo Point 88 is thinner than the Schneider, but both are 0.4mm. The Caliart Fineliner is thinner than the Staedtler Triplus but has a slightly larger tip size.
Fineliner foam can vary considerably in price. From an expensive Marvy Japan Le Pen at $3 a pen… to a pack of 10 markers from a thrift store for $3. Is there a difference in quality? Ask me this question about gel and ballpoint pens and my answer would be yes. But for fineliner, everyone writes almost the same. They have similar ink colors and some have three grips etc. So while I have my absolute favourites, if you can’t afford expensive fine liners, cheap ones will do just fine. Fineliner pens are usually used for drawing and sketching. They have a felt or plastic fiber tip and come in a variety of sizes and colors. Fineliner pens are usually disposable and are a much cheaper option than technical pens. When it comes to finding the best fineliner, most artists, illustrators and graphic designers will have their favourites, and there are many different reasons for choosing them; it is the blackest nib, has the most controlled line, feather feel, resistance to alcohol markers, etc. There are many elements to consider. Sometimes it will take a few tries to find the right fineliner for you.
I usually draw with thin lines in a Seawhite sketchbook that has 160gsm white paper. There is a slight grain, but it is mostly smooth and most fine pens accept this paper well (no scratches). This is the type of paper I will be using in this review.
Pen Review: Pentel Pointliner Fineliner
I use a lot of different fineliners, but I find that I reach for the Uni-Pin Fineliner more than anything else. It’s comfortable to use and the nibs are durable which is great for me as they can be a bit heavy at times. The ink flows smoothly but with enough resistance to keep the nib under control, which is a good balance, especially when I’m drawing something detailed like a portrait. Fineliner pens are not only available in black, but also in sepia, light gray and dark grey, which is good for a bit of variation. The ash can look almost like a pencil mark.
The Uni-Pin Fineliner is a good all-around pen, but it’s not the only Fineliner available. There is a huge selection to choose from.
For this review, I will be testing these fineliners for darkness, smudging, bleeding, streaking, and smoothness. Next, I’ll summarize what I think is the best fineliner.
The Staedtler Pigment Liner is the winner here as it comes in 11 different tip sizes. It is available in a wide tip of 1.2 and in a large selection of smaller sizes. Uni-Pin and Pigma Micron fine lines have a minimum tip size of 0.03. It provides good accuracy but you have to be careful not to press too hard as it is very sensitive. I have found that the 0.1 nib size holds up much better over time.
Faber Castell 4 Pitt Artist Pens Fineliner India Ink
My choice of fineliner pen size will depend on the type of drawing I’m doing. This usually ranges from 0.1 to 0.5. I like to add a lot of detail to my designs and find that smaller feathers work best for me. If I’m painting a block I can use a larger tip, but otherwise I prefer a smaller tip. For this review, I’m comparing fineliners with a 0.5 nib, except for the Stabilo Point 88, which only has a 0.4.
I’ve already noticed a 0.5 nib size difference between brands. The Pentel Pointliner is thicker and the Winsor & Newton Fineliner seems much thinner. The Sakura Pigma Micron Fineliner also seemed a little narrower, but upon closer inspection of the pen, the line width is said to be 0.45.
Sometimes really dark areas of a drawing or sketch can really come alive. Black goes very well with light colors and with some artwork it makes the difference between making a picture pop or not if it’s properly dark.
In this test, we look at how black the ink is. I filled a 1cm square block with each brand of Fineliner. Then I will compare them to see which is the lightest black and which is the darkest.
Review Of The Ohuhu Water Based Fineliner Art Marker Set
The results of this test surprised me. Overall, Stabilo Point 88 Fineliner seems to be the darkest, followed by Winsor and Newton Fineliner. This may be due to a bit of overlap as these two pens have smaller nibs so more marks are needed to get a solid block of color.
Uni-Pin and Sakura Pigma Micron Fineliners also performed very well. The Pentel Pointliner may not have had the blackest ink, but it was the easiest to get a solid block of black.
As I mentioned before, I use a paper cartridge, so results may vary with different papers, but I was very impressed with how black the Stabilo Point 88 was, being the cheapest in the range.
Fineliners are mostly black. This is great for most designs, but sometimes it’s nice to add a little color. The four fineliner brands I’m reviewing come in colors other than black. As I said earlier, Uni-Pin Fineliners are available in sepia, light gray and dark gray. I’ve had great results with this, but it’s still quite a limited color palette if you want to add color. If you want to go rainbow, Stabilo Point 88 Fineliners are the best choice, with 25 amazing colors.

In this test, we look at how much fine lines are smeared. It can be very annoying if the bottom of your palm goes over the drawing and the wet ink spills (especially if you’re left-handed).
