The iPhone 12 Pro Max is the biggest, heaviest and most expensive version of the Apple smartphone of 2020, a beast in every aspect.

The top-of-the-line iPhone starts at £1,099 and is higher than the 12 Pro (£999), 12 (£799) and 12 (£699).
Apple Iphone 12 Review: The Best Iphone For Most People
The 12 Pro Max has the same design as the rest of the iPhone 12: rounded sides, a full-screen front with thin bezels, and a frosted glass back. It has the same drop-resistant “Ceramic Shield” technology that covers the screen and the new MagSafe magnetic attachment system on the back for wireless chargers and accessories, but that’s where the physical similarities end.

The large OLED screen measures 6.7 inches diagonally, which is comparable to all other iPhones and competing Android Superphones such as the 6.78-inch OnePlus 8 or the 6.9-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.
The screen is amazing. It’s bright, sharp and almost tablet-shaped at this size. HDR video viewing is fantastic, and there’s also a good set of stereo speakers.

Holding it usually requires two hands, similar to superphone competition. It’s wide and weighs 226g – 18g heavier than the Note 20 Ultra, 39g heavier than the smaller 12 Pro, or a whopping 64g heavier than the standard iPhone 12.
Because of the rough edges, I found the 12 Pro Max to be lighter to hold than its rounded and equally heavy predecessor, the iPhone 11 Pro Max. I could use it with one hand with a little finger gymnastics and I didn’t have the hand pain I felt when I tried to hold the 11 Pro Max, which is like a bar of soap.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max uses the same A14 Bionic processor as the standard 12, 12 Pro and iPad Air, and has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of primary storage – twice the 64GB of the iPhone 12. The performance is the same everywhere: fast, smooth and quick processing of photos, videos or when playing sports. 5G speeds are the same, with slightly better reception than the iPhone 12 Pro and interference that affects battery life.

Battery life leads the class with more than 48 hours between charges (8 hours longer than the iPhone 12) with the screen on for more than 7 hours. The phone will last from 7:00 am on the first day to 7:00 am on the third day using 5G for about 5 hours and the rest will be used on wifi.

The 12 Pro comes with the same version of iOS 14.2 as the 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, and all other iPhones from 2015 or later. The iPhone 12 Pro Max has the same selfie camera and ultra-wide camera as the 12 and 12 Pro, they work the same, but different main and telephoto cameras on the back.
The telephoto camera has a longer 2.5x optical zoom than the 2x. Any increase in reach is welcome, but it pales in comparison to the 4x/5x optical zooms of the competition. The lens is slightly slower than the one on the 12 Pro, making it sharper in low light. But both phones still switch to a light-sensitive main camera in low light.
The main camera has the same 12-megapixel resolution, but the 47% larger sensor collects up to 87% more light than its predecessor.

In good light, it takes pictures that cannot be seen from the 12 Pro: well defined with good color accuracy and control of high-contrast scenes.
As light levels begin to drop in the evening, the larger sensor captures brighter, more detailed and quieter images, a noticeable improvement over other iPhones. The same goes for indoor shots on cloudy winter days. The dedicated night mode is also needed less often, and if it is, it takes photos faster than the standard 12 Pro.
For point and shoot photos, get a clear picture. For enthusiasts, the larger sensor provides more information when shooting in RAW formats, including Apple’s new ProRAW format, which will soon be available with a software update.

The 12 Pro Max also has the same lidar (light detection and emission) scanner on the back for night mode photos and fast autofocus. 12 Pro Max can record 4K video at 60 frames per second and also in Dolby Vision HDR.
Overall, the 12 Pro Max has the best camera of any iPhone and improved low-light performance compared to other iPhone 12 models. It also puts Apple on par with top competitors, although the 2.5x optical zoom is still behind the best in the business.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max costs £1,099 for 128GB, £1,199 for 256GB or £1,399 for 512GB of storage.
In comparison, the 12 Pro costs from $999, the 12 costs £799, the 12 Mini costs £699 and the iPhone SE costs £399. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra costs £1,179 and the OnePlus 8 Pro costs £799.
