After testing half a dozen phones over several days, we’ve come to the conclusion that the OnePlus Nord N20 5G is the best budget Android phone out there. It’s fast enough for most people, and it has a sharp OLED screen, a good battery, and even 5G connectivity, a rare feature for a phone that costs just $300.

The OnePlus Nord N20 5G is more powerful than Samsung’s budget phone, and its 1080p OLED screen is sharper than other phones in its price range, which tend to have lower-contrast LCDs. The N20 5G even offers a fingerprint sensor, a rare feature on a budget phone. It has the Android 12 update available with three years of security updates (until spring 2025). However, it does not work on the Verizon network.

The Pixel 6a beats the budget competition in every way, and that makes it a good choice if you can afford to spend a little more. For $450, the Pixel 6a offers the best camera of any phone, including phones twice the price. In addition, the software experience is smoother and more pleasant than phones from OnePlus or Samsung, and the Pixel 6a has the same powerful Tensor processor as the more expensive Pixel phones. Google also guarantees security updates until summer 2027. However, the Pixel 6a falls short of our other picks in terms of battery life and lacks a headphone jack.
The Samsung Galaxy A03s has better performance and more update support than other budget phones and works on all mobile networks.
At just $160, the Samsung Galaxy A03s is the cheapest phone in the lineup right now, but it doesn’t work like a low-end phone. The A03s is good enough for web browsing, texting and playing simple games. And despite the price of the phone, Samsung does not skip updates: the A03 will receive updates until the beginning of 2026, a full four-year support from launch, which is unheard of for cheap phones. The build quality is lower compared to the Galaxy A14 5G, the camera is not as good and this model does not have 5G support, but the battery life is good.

If you don’t have insurance, you can pay the balance of the phone you no longer have, plus the cost of a new phone.
We also like that budget phones are often unlocked, whether they’re bought online or directly from the manufacturer; you can use these phones on AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon in the US and most networks in the rest of the world. Most importantly, you can use an unlocked phone through a Virtual Prepaid Mobile Network Operator (MVNO); these low-cost carriers operate on national networks but tend to have data usage restrictions or call restrictions. You can use an MVNO, and if there’s a better deal, you can put another carrier’s SIM in your phone and get on with your life.

It’s best to stick with more popular budget phone manufacturers with a strong US presence and sales presence, as such companies are faster at patching security issues. And if you choose a phone from a big company like Google or Samsung, there are less serious security flaws.
After testing dozens of budget phones, we’ve found that most of them aren’t worth recommending despite their low price, performance, bloated software, useless cameras, infrequent or non-existent updates, or a combination of these issues. Here’s what we look for in a phone before we recommend it.
OnePlus has earned its place by offering a lot of power for a little money in its phones, and that’s exactly what it does with the OnePlus Nord N20 5G. While most Android phones have average 720p LCD screens, the N20 5G has a sharper, 1080p OLED. The N20 5G processor is a step up from what you get in the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G, and its impressive battery life is further extended by 33W fast charging. However, the camera is poor even for a budget phone, and OnePlus offers security updates for three years, while Samsung and Google offer updates for four and five years.

As component costs have increased in recent years, we’ve seen budget phones move away from mid-range processors to cheaper, less reliable options. The N20 5G responds to this trend by running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor, which is more powerful than the MediaTek chip of the Galaxy A14 5G. The N20 5G also has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which is faster than the Galaxy A14 5G or Galaxy A03s, plus a microSD card slot. Browsing complex websites, playing 3D games, and installing and launching apps is a better experience on the N20 5G than any other 2022 budget phone we’ve tested, except Google’s more expensive Pixel 6a. The N20 5G also has NFC for mobile payments, a feature that most smartphones lack.
1080p screen resolution is common in sub-$300 phones, but supply issues related to the pandemic have made it rare these days. On the N20 5G, OnePlus offers an excellent 1080p OLED display that is sharper than the Galaxy A13 5G’s 720p LCD, although not as bright or vibrant as the Pixel 6a’s OLED. The refresh rate of the N20 5G screen is limited to 60Hz, which is lower than the 90Hz refresh rate of the A14 5G. However, the N20 5G easily maintains a 60Hz refresh rate during operation, and the A14 5G sometimes drops below 90Hz, making this first advantage less useful. And resolution is more important than refresh rate for a phone at this price point.
The 4,500mAh battery is enough to keep the N20 5G going all day, no matter how hard you try to pump it out. Two days per charge is possible depending on usage, and this phone’s 33W charging is twice as fast as the A14 5G (15W); The N20 5G even surpasses the Pixel 6a (18 W) in this respect. A full charge takes less than an hour. It’s also nice to see the N20 5G ships with a cable and charger, as many 2022 phones won’t.
