From the looks of it, the phones are basically the same. Only the camera department and bundled accessory (charger) are different. Side by side, top or bottom, you won’t be able to tell for yourself. But it’s not just looks. Same specifications and performance. They are also great phones, and if I didn’t know better, I’d estimate the price around 30k, maybe more.

The phone has a 6.67-inch FHD+ 60Hz LCD display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G SoC, 4/6/8GB RAM, 64/128GB storage, a 5,020mAh battery and a quad camera bump on the back. They share an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 5MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor.
Now let’s look at the differences. The Redmi Note 9 Pro comes with a 48MP primary rear camera (trimmed to 12MP) and a 64MP unit on the Max pro (trimmed to 16MP). The Pro comes with 4/6GB RAM options and the Pro Max comes with 6/8GB options. Finally, the Pro gets a decent 18W bundled charger, and the Max gets a more powerful 33W charger. Pricing for Pro starts at Rs 13,999 (4/64) and Max starts at Rs 16,499 (6/64).
How many megapixels here or there? Don’t you really need a 33W charger that’s destructive in the long run?
Performance is a sore spot on both phones. Now Xiaomi has said it has chosen a 60Hz display and the more efficient SD720G chipset (compared to the competing Realme 6’s 90Hz display and MediaTek G90T SoC) for the following reasons:

The Redmi Note 9 Pro’s camera setup was disappointing. The default camera is great when the lighting is good. Really good. Really good. However, if you try to lower the light a bit or take a picture indoors, you’ll more often than not end up with a blurry, out-of-focus picture that’s poorly exposed. I think this has more to do with the lower shutter speed and ISO sensitivity, but in any case, the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max’s camera is better.

On the other hand, the Pro Max is amazing. Images are crisp and clear, with plenty of detail for those looking for a bit of trimming. The shutter speed is also faster and there is less afterimage when trying to capture a fast-moving subject.
In night mode, the difference between the two phones is day and night. to the letter. The Note 9 Pro’s night mode offers a bit more detail than the normal mode, but the Note 9 Pro Max’s night mode is pretty close to the iPhone 11’s night mode, at least in terms of color and exposure.
Even in video, the Note 9 Pro Max is far ahead. Both cameras struggle a bit with focus, but the Note 9 Pro didn’t quite expose the scene properly to save its life. In the bird feeder video you can see here, the Note 9 Pro can’t keep exposure, but the Note 9 Pro Max easily does.
Redmi Note 8 Pro Hidden Features, Tips, And Tricks
When it comes to selfies, both cameras are pretty good. The 32MP Pro Max selfies are slightly sharper, but image quality is largely comparable.
The 8MP ultra wide angle and 5MP macro work as advertised on both phones. It’s not perfect, but there are options available if you need them.
With the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Pro Max, Xiaomi hopes to do more than ever in the design department.
The Redmi Note 9 Pro is a great phone, but it costs a bit less than its much more capable sibling and doesn’t have as good value as its closest rival, the Realme 6.

This is a change in strategy and naming and pricing rules for Xiaomi’s Redmi series. We can all agree that this series has established itself as a leader in the budget smartphone market. The grip is so strong that I have at least one smartphone for almost every price range between Rs 7,000 and Rs. 20,000. This begs the question. Are the extra features of the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max worth paying more for, or would I be better off with the Redmi Note 9 Pro instead? We test the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max to confirm.
Xiaomi’s Redmi series devices have grown to such an extent that the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max is bulky and less than ideal. With a thickness of 8.8mm and a weight of 209g, it is difficult to use with one hand. It’s hard to get your hands on without touching the top of the tall 6.67-inch display. Thankfully, the 20:9 aspect ratio is slim enough to manage. To withstand everyday use, the display features a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 layer. There’s a thin earpiece with a white notification light just above the display.
Redmi Note 9 Pro Max has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner built into the power button on the right side of the phone. It’s slightly concave so you can easily find it by touching it. I didn’t like the positioning as it’s higher than where my fingers would naturally rest. If you are left-handed, you will find this phone most comfortable to use with your index finger on your left. I found this scanner to be fast when unlocking the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max.

Another issue we encountered was the placement of the volume buttons. It’s taller than this side-mounted fingerprint scanner and less accessible. Following Xiaomi’s tradition of providing IR emitters in their smartphones, the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max has an IR emitter on top. Also on the bottom is a headphone jack and a USB Type-C port.

We had the Interstellar Black version for this review, which looks bluish in bright light. The back panel stained easily and required frequent cleaning. Xiaomi gives the box a case that will help. Speaking of what’s in the box, the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max also comes with a 33W charger, which is a step up compared to the 18W charger that came with the Redmi Note 9 Pro (review).
