A shiny new copy of Akira on 4K disc arrived today. Imports from Japan aren’t cheap, but for your money you get an extra BD with a 4K movie and new audio playback document in addition to the standard BD. Plus, it all comes in a very nice box.

I love the movie and I have seen it many times in many formats, first on Manga Video’s two VHS sets released in the early 90’s. I haven’t seen the new 4K disc in its entirety, but my review was good and, unfortunately, not good. It’s very soft and DNR has specifics. HDR has its place, but it’s special. I’m going to watch it this weekend, but unfortunately it looks like a disappointment. I also did a back-to-back comparison with BD and surprisingly, BD seems much weaker, useless.

Akira (4k+2d Blu Ray Steelbook) (i’ve Entertainment) [korea]

I remember being surprised by the high volume on BD. Did they improve it with Atmos?

Panasonic TH-65GZ1000U | Panasonic DP-UB820 | Atmos 5.1.2: Focal Chorus 826W, CC800W, 806W. SVS SB2000. Focal Choir IC 706 V | Yamaha RX-A2050 | Playstation 4 Pro | Apple TV 4K | Foxtel IQ4 | Harmony Smart Control

I don’t have Atmos, but I think it’s listed as 7.1. This is a fresh mix and very powerful in the rear channels. This is very interesting.

Thanks for the thoughts, I’ve never seen Akira so I’m tempted to import it. Now I think I’ll wait until it comes to the US to see if it’s any better.

Akira’: How The ’80s Anime Classic Changed Pop Culture Forever

Well, I watched it tonight and the disc was a huge disappointment. The source is not bright, prints are sometimes visible and blacks are weak. Dark scenes look terrible. HDR is used only in lights at the beginning of the night. Totally soft, many images look very soft and out of focus.

On the other hand, the new sound mixes are great and Yamashiro Gumi’s vocals are great when things get busy. There are four audio tracks, a TrueHD remastered track in 5.1, a Dolby Digital 5.1 track (I believe this is the original audio mix), a PCM stereo track, and finally an English dubbed TrueHD 5.1 track.

I haven’t seen the movie in a few years and it’s still amazing. The 14-minute opening is one of the show’s greatest. The film is amazing to watch from start to finish, and like the film that clearly inspired it – Blade Runner, Akira was a huge influence. This is a great job. I love it. Disc, not so much.

Akira 4k Blu Ray Review & Comments

I remember sitting in front of the TV watching Akira on VHS when I was 11/10. I was immediately happy! Not just Akira, but Manga.

Not using English is very dangerous and rude IMO – shame on me for waiting for this…

To be fair, the subs are the same thing, (there are two things, 2.0 PCM sound), which was correct. They met about what was done to release the new and finally correctly translated 25 years.

GITS was released in Japan a while ago in 4K BD. I’ve seen it too and was similarly unimpressed. There is no HDR and most or all of it is obviously 2K.

As far as I can tell, this disc is not HDR. I use a Sony xb800m2 and if you turn off Dolby Vision and set HDR to Auto, HDR won’t work, it’s different than it should be when it’s HDR or DV.

If you turn on Dolby Vision, the brightness of NITS increases and is often visible in neon and bright lights, but I’m afraid that Sony calculates the brightness and darkness of the scene. Most of the time it does a good job (I usually switch to DV because it works fine with normal HDR), but if you look closely at the packaging, you can’t see an HDR pin anywhere.

I have the UK version which is supposed to be the same as the Japanese version (if it’s a low quality version it won’t play better in cinemas).

I guess if you’re gaming on a screen larger than 65 inches, this info will be of some use, but my advice? Buy the standard Blu-ray.

I think this is the case with most Ultra HD drives. Watching old movies enhanced with 4k HDR doesn’t excite me more than watching a recent 4k movie. For example, Battle Angel Alita is amazing in 4k with all the bells and whistles in HDR. This is a significant difference from watching 2k. Superman in 4k? It’s not like seeing a movie for the first time. Lenses were not as sharp in every way as they are today. Early films even used focusing as a way to soften wrinkles, meaning the various soft qualities of the lens and film combination are affected. With a slight boost in gamut and bright, almost burnt-in parts, these latest 4k remasters look patchy. The only 4k movies that benefit from 4k restoration are star wars, especially the first movies. The extended HDR gamut is specially designed to show all the signs in the sky and make the color more vivid. It’s like you’re watching a real remaster. I agree that all the horses are for classes and everything.

Fortune Star made special versions of the titles for 88 movies, and Eureka (as far as I know) did it right – a super sample from 4k to 2k. These releases seem to be a new innovation, especially with the color grading that rubs a few VHS purists the wrong way. They make you feel like a new way to watch a movie that will make you want a remaster. No need for 4k or HDR.

Either way, Akira and the GITS expansion will benefit a little from these 4k versions, and I
