Last year, three of the top five best-selling phones worldwide were Samsung phones, ranking third, fourth and fifth behind the iPhone XR and 11, according to Counterpoint Research. If you live in the US, you might think of Samsung. Think of the Galaxy S or Note – but the best-selling Samsung phones are the mid-range Galaxy A series phones.

Samsung is doing its best to sell more of these phones in the US with the $399 Galaxy A51. This price puts it in direct competition with the iPhone SE, but there are also numerous other Android phones for under $500. What sets the A51 apart is Samsung’s marketing budget and partnerships. It’s available unlocked on Amazon and the Samsung website, which is important for a mid-range Samsung device, and it’s also available on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and Xfinity Mobile.

Compared to the iPhone SE, the A51’s main attraction is its large 6.5-inch OLED screen. Samsung said this phone is “excellent” in three specifications: screen, camera,
Battery life. A crazy, meme-filled ad was even created to drive home these points. (You should check it out because the advertising is absolutely great.) Unfortunately, the Galaxy A51 isn’t quite as good.
The Galaxy A51 doesn’t look like a cheap phone at all. It is large and well put together. According to Samsung, the material it’s made of is called “Glasstic,” which sounds a lot more luxurious than it feels. It feels almost like glass, but has just a hint of the hollow feeling you can get from plastic.
It has 128GB of internal storage and the price is very high at $399. In addition, you can expand it with microSD storage. There’s also a headphone jack, which is a welcome addition at any price point, but is a little more important than usual at this price.

What I like most about the Galaxy A51 is the screen. It’s simply a well-made 6.5-inch OLED display that’s bright even in sunlight. If you’re looking for advanced display technology—like colors that adapt to ambient light, high refresh rates, or even super-high resolution—look elsewhere. But at 1080 x 2400 resolution, there are more than enough pixels even with this screen size. I’ve seen a lot of budget big screens on Android phones, and this isn’t one of them.
There are tradeoffs with every phone, and $399 phones are better than $1,000 phones. Therefore, phone makers need to decide their priorities and Samsung has clearly chosen the display. Since it’s something that people look at and interact with hundreds of times a day, you should go for it.
But I can’t say anything – not about the display, but about what’s underneath – especially the punch-hole selfie camera. I have no problem with pinhole cameras. In fact, I generally prefer them to any size groove. But for some incomprehensible reason, Samsung has put a small chrome ring around the camera. It catches at certain angles when the light hits it and then it’s hard to see. Strange.
The rest under the screen is an optical fingerprint sensor. I’m not sure if Samsung hasn’t had enough iterations with these sensors or what, but it’s extremely slow. It may take up to a second for the flashing green animation to inform you that the phone is unlocked. It’s also not the most accurate sensor, especially in direct sunlight.

Unfortunately, this test also extends to the processor and RAM. In the US, most popular Samsung phones use Qualcomm processors, but this A51 uses the Samsung Exynos 9611, a mid-range chip that isn’t quite up to the task of making this phone powerful. Feeling of flexibility. Apps take a long time to load – especially if they haven’t been opened recently and are therefore not active in 4GB of RAM.
When you use a browser or an app, everything happens at exactly the right moment. But sometimes there are problems displaying the screen or loading the next content in your feed.
As I said, different phone manufacturers will have to choose to favor these cheaper phones. For example, for the iPhone SE, Apple kept the old iPhone 8 body with a smaller screen and large bezels, but equipped it with the fastest mobile processor available: the A13 Bionic. Samsung has chosen a different path.
The battery life is okay, but doesn’t quite live up to Samsung’s claim of being “long-lasting.” It lasted me just over a day – certainly better than what I was able to achieve with the iPhone SE. But with a 4,000mAh battery and a 1080p display, I’m a little surprised I’m not doing much better. In theory, these specs should have made for something much more impressive, and I wonder if perhaps the Exynos processor is to blame.
Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: A Mid Range Phone That Doesn’t Justify Its Price
Finally, there is the camera system, which contains more lenses than necessary. The main lens has a 48-megapixel sensor that takes 12-megapixel images as standard. These images, like almost every camera these days, are good enough in good lighting. I was surprised to see good white balance, something Samsung sometimes misses. However, Samsung’s other bad trend of making shadows appear unnatural is still present.
You can already tell what’s coming: it’s hard in poor lighting conditions – even worse than the iPhone SE. And if you really zoom in on the details on the A51, you’ll see more clutter than other smartphone cameras – even at 48 megapixels.
There’s a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel macro camera, each aimed more at entertainment than great photos. Fun is good! I really enjoyed using these cameras. There’s also a “5-megapixel” depth camera, which doesn’t seem to do anything useful, at least in portrait mode. Finally, the selfie camera has a resolution of 32 megapixels and produces photos that are often over-edited.
Finally, there is the software. Samsung’s One UI tweaks to Android continue to make using big-screen phones nicer. But Samsung also continues to allow carriers to litter their phones with crapware: My Verizon-based test unit was completely inundated with games and services that no one wanted. I also wish I could say that I trust this phone to receive software updates for more than two or three years.
Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: Wait For A Price Drop
Of the 3 “huge” things Samsung promises, I think the Galaxy A51 only delivers on 1.5 of them. The screen is great, the battery life is pretty good and the camera doesn’t disappoint. The Pixel 3A (and perhaps the upcoming 4A) and iPhone SE are shocking with their camera quality at a price of $399. But the A51’s photos definitely look like they were taken with a mid-range phone.
It’s hard to make a good $400 phone, and none of them are great in every way. But you want at least some parts of your phone to feel like they’re made from something much more expensive. Except for the screen, the Galaxy A51 isn’t great enough.
Every smart device today requires you to agree to a set of terms and conditions before you can use it – contracts that no one actually reads. It is not possible for us to read and analyze each of these agreements. But we’re starting the review by counting exactly how many times you have to click “Agree” to use the device, since these are agreements that most people don’t read and are certainly non-negotiable.

Finally, if you get the carrier version of the A51. The Verizon version we tested had options for location, app information, cloud services, and even Verizon’s Digital Security virus service – none of which were necessary, but all of which were intrusive and annoying to set up.
Final balance: There are four required agreements, about eight optional agreements that I think most users will want to agree to, and four or more carrier agreements that I think most users will say no to. To keep them relevant, Samsung updated the Galaxy A series for the second time last year. So what has changed? Like last time, Samsung is consolidating key strengths while eliminating some weak points. These Galaxy A series phones have never outperformed their rivals in terms of specs, but still stand out from the competition with the refined experience they offer.
