The Samsung Galaxy A50s doesn’t look like a definitive update to the Galaxy A50 and is more of an incremental upgrade. A big focus here is bringing the 48MP camera to the A series. So it’s a very refined phone from the A50, but it doesn’t come close to what the competition has to offer.

Samsung Galaxy A50s Specs

Earlier this year, Samsung announced an update to its Galaxy A50 (opens in a new tab) (opens in a new tab) — the Galaxy A50s that just went on sale. The A50s bring some of the camera features found in the company’s premium phones to the mid-range segment. And there’s a new chipset powering the phone with support for Samsung Pay.

We were very impressed with the Galaxy A50’s display and build quality, but the camera left us wanting more. Likewise, Samsung’s OneUI didn’t feel polished enough during regular use, which is often painful for buyers.

So, does this additional update bring any special features to the table or is it just another phone from the South Korean electronics maker? Here’s what we found out.

Samsung Galaxy A50s price starts at Rs 22,999 with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage. The second variant has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, priced at Rs. 24,999 is. The Galaxy A50 was released at the same prices, but you can get it for Rs. 18,490 (4GB + 64GB) and Rs. May retail in 21.490 (6GB + 64GB) official.

Samsung Galaxy A50s Review: Shines Like A Prism

The A50s are available at leading online retailers, Samsung India Online Shop and Samsung Opera House in Bangalore.

It comes in three colors – Prism Crush Black, White and Violet. Samsung sent us the top-end variant (6GB RAM + 128GB) Prism Crush Violet color for our review.

Following the lines of the Galaxy A50, the A50s also feature a glossy and reflective coating that produces a variety of visually appealing colors. This time, however, the rear panel has been tweaked to include a prism-like design that highlights only the most reflected colors. It’s not as flashy as the design on the A50 and looks decent.

Because of the reflective layer, the back is also very easily susceptible to fingerprints and smudges and the phone struggles a lot to keep the back clean.

Galaxy A50 Review: Samsung’s Most Value For Money Mid Ranger Yet

A camera module is in the top left corner of the phone, followed by an LED flash. The company’s initials are engraved in the back panel and are centrally located. It’s a similar setup we saw on the A50.

The volume rocker and power button are placed on the right side while the SIM card slot is present on the left side.

There is a noticeable ring around the screen flush with the U-shaped notch cutout. The bottom edge of the phone houses the 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C port and speaker grill. There is an extra one on top of the notch cutout.

The Galaxy A50s has the same dimensions as the Galaxy A50, 158.5 x 74.5 x 7.7 mm and weighs 166 grams. It feels attractive in the hand and does not have much bulk, so one can hold it and use it comfortably.

Samsung A50s Review: Stylish Midranger That Gets ‘almost’ Everything Right

Due to its slim profile, the Galaxy A50s feels lighter in the hand and the prism-like reflective pattern on the back is a bit toned down compared to the previous generation.

The Samsung Galaxy A50s has a 6.4-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) resolution display using a Super AMOLED panel. A U-shaped notch cutout on the front gives it a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 91.6% screen.

Given the size, we believe it’s the same display we saw on the Galaxy A50. If true, the screen is also covered with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for extra protection.

We were impressed with the Galaxy A50’s visual performance and similarly the Super AMOLED display on the A50s does not disappoint. The screen is capable of producing bright, vibrant colors, but is sometimes on the warm side of things. However, the U-shaped notch called the Infinity-U screen cutout does not hinder the overall viewing experience.

Samsung Galaxy A50: Is It Still Worth Buying?

Samsung gives users a bunch of options to adjust the screen according to the comfort of their eyes. These options include a blue light filter mode, a dark mode and two color modes: natural and vivid. The phone also has the option to turn on edge panels and support edge lighting for notifications, which is an added plus.

Overall, if one goes for the Galaxy A50s, they will not be disappointed with the viewing experience it offers.

One of the most notable updates to the Galaxy A50s is its primary camera. It’s now a 48MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture and although Samsung hasn’t officially said it, the sensor used here is the Sony IMX582.

In addition to the primary camera, there is a 5MP depth camera with an 8MP ultra-wide lens and f/2.2 aperture. Both of these cameras use the Sony IMX616 sensor.

The camera app has a dedicated night mode, Best Shot, Scene Optimizer with 30 presets and Super Steady Video mode. On the front, there is a 32MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture.

Now the difference between Sony’s IMX582 sensor on the A50s and the IMX586 on phones like the Realme X, Mi A3 or OnePlus 7 is minimal. Both sensors have similar image capture capabilities, but the IMX582 records up to 4K at 30fps while the IMX586 can do 4K at 60fps.

Samsung’s camera upgrades improve the overall photography experience on the A50s. During the day, the camera produced some beautiful photos, but the same cannot be said about its performance in dark environments.

The primary camera produces natural-looking photos with a balanced and vibrant color profile, while photos from the ultra-wide camera take some practice. This is also due to the fact that an ultra-wide lens does not support a tap to focus.

At night, photos taken on the A50s came out full of noise and even the camera app took a while to focus on the subject we were recording. The night mode within the camera app does a better job of optimizing photos during the night and reducing noise. However, even this is not enough to improve the night performance of the A50s camera.

Since the phone has a 48MP sensor, users can go to the camera app, tap the aspect ratio button and select 3:4H from the list of options to take a photo in full 48MP.

By Sanket Vijayasarathy: In recent months, Samsung has released updated versions of phones launched in the first half of the year, such as the Galaxy M30s, Galaxy M10s, Galaxy A20s, Galaxy A50s and Galaxy A70s. Holding the Galaxy A50s will instantly remind you of the Galaxy A50. It brings the same slim, slim and lightweight body we loved from the original model. The Galaxy A50s is 7.7mm thick and weighs just 166 grams, making it a very light and easy smartphone. The slim form factor combined with the curved back panel gives it a great feel in the hand.

The curved back panel is made of plastic, which costs Rs. On phones over 20,000 it gets a bit more frustrating. That said, the plastic body makes the phone light and comfortable to hold, so that’s a positive trade-off, if any.
