No matter what Samsung wants you to believe, the Galaxy series does not begin and end with the S and Note lines. Samsung’s flagships may get all the attention, but you can’t be the world’s biggest smartphone maker without packing the best of the big in the latest phone.

That’s where the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes in, and it’s great. At a glance, it looks like the Galaxy S10, but without increasing the graphics performance inside, it offers a fast enough experience. It’s an absolute steal at £310 and worth considering if the S and Note ranges are too expensive for you.

The Galaxy A series is very confusing. What you really need to know is that the Galaxy A50 is currently the second best in the lineup, behind the A70. It will soon be the third when the A80 launches later this month. This makes it better than the A10, A20e and A40, overall.
What this literally translates to is a 6.4-inch device that looks a lot like the Samsung Galaxy S10 but cut down on the inside. The Exynos 9610 octa-core 2.3GHz processor powering the phone is roughly equivalent to the Snapdragon 675 that powers the Galaxy A70. The phone is also supported by 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.
Surprisingly, for the price, the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with a triple camera array on the back with a depth sensor and an ultra-wide lens, along with a 25-megapixel main snapper. The A50 also comes with Samsung’s usual Super AMOLED display, which is impressive when rivals in this price range fall short of cheaper IPS displays. Doubly so when it also includes an in-display fingerprint reader.
So what’s the downside? Well, quite a reasonable £310 don’t you know. It’s actually quite a bit cheaper than Samsung’s other phone offerings, so its closest competitors come from other manufacturers.

First up is our favorite mid-ranger, the Google Pixel 3. A stripped-down version of Google’s flagship, this version is slightly slower, less impressively built and drops some features to come in at £399, but already retails for around £350. On a similar note, the P30 Lite is a cut-down version of Huawei’s P30 series and retails for £329.
Otherwise, there is the flagship in mid-range clothing, the Xiaomi Pocophone F1. It’s a phone that manages to cost just £329 despite having the fastest Qualcomm mobile processor of 2018. Finally, there’s the Nokia 8.1, which started at £380 but has recently become much cheaper than that.
It’s some pretty strong competition, but the Samsung Galaxy A50 is off to a great start with looks that owe a lot to the Galaxy S10. That means there’s almost no bezel to speak of, although this version does see the front camera notch back. Here, though, it’s more than just a notch—a small notch at the top of the phone.
Like the S10, there’s a small chin at the bottom of the phone, but it’s really noticeable, as the other sides have no bezels to speak of from the front. The back is slightly curved, and it’s plastic instead of glass, which should make it a bit more durable. However, this is the type of phone you want to protect with a case.

Most excitingly for a phone of this price, the fingerprint reader is built into the display, meaning it’s not visible on the phone itself. Press your thumb on the bottom of the screen and the phone will unlock, maybe a hair slower than usual, but still a great feature at this price.
When it comes to other features, as always Samsung does very well. Extended storage? Check: microSD cards up to 512 GB are supported. A headphone jack? present and appropriate. Two SIM cards? Yes sir The two downsides I can find are that it’s not waterproof and doesn’t support wireless charging, but you can’t have everything for this price.
If there’s one thing Samsung is known for with its phones, it’s the quality of its screens. And this Super AMOLED display doesn’t disappoint – this time you’re looking at a 6.4-inch panel with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080.
The screen displays 100% of the sRGB spectrum and, in the screen’s default color mode, manages to render colors very accurately. The other modes – Photo, Cinema and Adaptive – are more dynamic, but you can’t say you don’t give options.

Being AMOLED, the contrast is perfect and the brightness isn’t bad either, reaching a maximum luminance of 560cd/m2 in automatic mode (even if you manually set it to maximum brightness, probably for battery reasons).
In short, the display is as good as you’d expect for the price, better, in fact, thanks to the addition of an in-display fingerprint reader.
Before answering that question, a quick recap. The Samsung Galaxy A50 is powered by a 2.3GHz Exynos 9610 processor, coupled with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. In everyday use, it feels smooth, unlocks quickly and jumps between apps with ease. But how is it done in references?
With one obvious exception, almost everything is. The Samsung Galaxy A50 beats everything in its price range (including, ironically, the £60 more expensive Galaxy A70), but not by enough of a margin to make things more obvious.

With that exception: the £329 Xiaomi Pocophone F1 wipes the floor with everything else in this price range. That’s no surprise given that it uses the same chip as last year’s Samsung Galaxy S9 in the US, but it’s pretty clear what you need to do if you want to maximize your bang for your buck.
It’s a similar story when it comes to graphics grunt, though the Galaxy A50 fares slightly worse here, lagging behind the Snapdragon-powered Pixel 3a and Nokia 8.1. Of course, the Pocophone F1 is the clear winner.
But the Samsung Galaxy A50 has one major aspect up its sleeve, and that’s battery life. Our video wasn’t long enough to capture it all, so it took a second spin, clocking in at a whopping 21 hours and 21 minutes before the 4,000mAh cell finally died. It’s only outdone by the extra 500mAh of the Galaxy A70, where it managed an incredible 25 hours and 22 minutes.
The Samsung Galaxy A50 offers us not one, not two, but three rear cameras. The 25-megapixel f/1.7 main camera is supported by an eight-megapixel ultra-wide affair and a five-megapixel f/2.2 depth sensor. It would have been nice to have a telephoto zoom for one of these, but I’m probably asking for the moon over a stick given the generous specs we’ve been given for the price.
Buy Galaxy A50s
This compares quite well to the £329 Huawei P30 Lite’s triple-camera array (48-megapixel, f/1.8 with an eight-megapixel wide-angle lens and a two-megapixel depth sensor). And while the shots of the Samsung Galaxy A50 look pretty good from a distance, when zooming in, it’s clear that the Huawei P30 Lite has the edge.
This is not to say that the Galaxy A50 is bad, by any means. And given Huawei’s uncertain Android future, one might think that a slight dip in loyalty is a price worth paying.
In low-light indoor shots, the camera is more even, with both delivering images full of detail, accurate colors and low noise. Good work, both, although Huawei once again has a slight advantage.
For video, the Galaxy A50 is capable of recording in Full HD at 30 fps. If you want 4K or 60fps (not both at the same time, mind you), you’ll need to drop an extra £60 on the Galaxy A70. That said, the video quality is pretty good and the image stabilization seems strong enough for shaky hands.

The front-facing selfie camera also deserves a little shout-out. It’s a 25-megapixel affair with an f/2.0 aperture. That might be overkill for Skype calls and selfies, and even with Beauty Mode turned off, Samsung gets rid of all your wrinkles and gives you a weird, alien glow in the Samsung Camera app.
That might be seen as a plus for some, but beware of the exaggeration of smartphone beauty tips on Instagram: you’re not fooling anyone.
However, if all you can say is that it’s wrong with the Galaxy A50, Samsung is doing something right. Very true indeed.
For £310 you’re getting a pretty impressive phone that looks good, has a great screen, is fast enough for most people and takes decent photos. It’s a phone that will be more than enough for most people.
