I’ve been happily using Hobonichi Week for the past three years, but last fall, when I started high school, it wasn’t enough. I work as a full-time writer and part-time librarian, I have two kids with their own schedules, and when I added my schoolwork to the mix, I felt like there weren’t enough pages in the world to handle anything. – My performance. Lists. I feel the same way now. Last January, when I realized that there were too many things I couldn’t fit into my plan, I decided not to update my plan and instead to simplify my life. I don’t want more to-dos than can fit in a regular planner! It was a good plan. But it didn’t work. I left my weekend a few months ago and went through BuJoing at the end of the year. So, what’s in store for 2022?
This year I aspired to the same goal, and Weeks, my favorite style, tested me. The planner’s season is full of temptation. Reason prevailed, but I stuck to my plan to get an A5 planner – but not the Hobonichi this year. I’ve tried Cousin before and liked it, but the Midori MT Diary is right up there with me as far as my favorite diary, and I think the Midori MT Diary 2022 A5, 1 Day 1 book format would be perfect for me.

On the front end, I have monthly distributions from December 2021 to January 2023, so I can start early and plan ahead. Weeks starting on Monday is the only logical way to do it, and I won’t listen to arguments to the contrary. Well then 385 non-delayed daily pages, for a total of 416 pages. You know how much I love pages.
What caught my eye about the style of these daily pages was that they resembled the style I had been designing for my Pujo for the past few months. To stay afloat, I had to use an hourly schedule designed for me, this model has a list of hours on the left side. It’s open from 8am to midnight, but there’s room upstairs if your day starts off as ridiculously as mine. Technically, enough room is listed until 1am, effectively creating a 24-hour schedule. Better to work at night! Or stay up all night studying. There are 7 lines below the hour section of notes, or if you have a time machine, you can add extra hours to your day.
What makes these pages special is the edges, which are the real star of the show. All monthly calendars have lists and space for notes and planning. A proper section of each daily page is open for sketches, notes, lists, followers’ habits, stickers, tea stains, poems, thoughts, reminders or heartfelt lamentations. It can be whatever you need.
It’s the perfect mix of structure and chaos. My life is a perfectly planned mess, and the planner makes room for it all. It has two bookmarks, so you can have one for your monthly section and one for your daily section. It comes with sticky notes that you can use to mark your months on your daily planner pages.
Sketchbook Review: Pentalic Aqua Journal Compared With Moleskine Watercolor Notebook
I’ve already worked on the Midori MD paper several times, but I’ll repeat my interest here – it’s really good. It is light and compact and easily holds all fountain pens and liquid liners. There’s a demo, but it’s shorter than Domo River Paper. It casts better shade, and has a faster drying time than most coated papers. If you’re making a quick itinerary, I still recommend using bookmarked paper.
There are actually two strikes against this plan. For one, there is no weekly overview. A month and a day. I like to see a week at a glance, so this will require some adjustment. And two, all those pages mean this planner is solid. It is about an inch thick. It does not fit most A5 notebooks. Midori expects this, and has a nice cover for himself: soft, lightweight PVC with a faux leather stone effect. It is a very small colored cream with the MD logo on the lid and 2022 on the spine. Very good. Elegant rather than boring. But usually I slip it into a knack seed box or a gallon leather folio – alas, neither fits. I can cover it with stickers
I don’t expect any book to do the job of managing the chaos of my life, but I think it will make a good assistant in 2022. I’m glad I finally admitted that I needed a bigger space to do bigger things. And I hope it helps keep the little things from slipping through the cracks. 2020 and 2021 are not good. Not so much. “The story of 2022,” the book says inside the cover. I can’t help but give her a hard look and hope she’s on her best behavior.
