The Galaxy A20 we’re going to talk about today overlaps with the Galaxy M20 (review), or sits between the two variants of the M20 to be exact. Being an A-series phone, you get a comparatively better design, fast charging, an AMOLED display and the new One UI software. These are clear benefits that cannot be denied. But are these benefits good enough to overshadow the likes of the Realme 3 Pro and the highly sought-after Redmi Note 7 Pro, which offer faster processors? Read our Galaxy A20 review for our opinion.
Update A20 Samsung Price Review
The Samsung Galaxy A20 follows the standard 2019 A-series design. It has a premium-looking 3D “glass” back (which is a fancier way of saying glass-coated polycarbonate), a much-appreciated USB Type-C port, and it feels extremely durable. It’s also completely similar to the Galaxy A30, except Samsung uses a different V-notch AMOLED panel (compared to the A30’s Infinity-U, a minor change).

But all these are just details. Regardless of what the design labels say (glass, 3D, curved, rounded, etc.), we know good design when we see it. The Galaxy A20 is sleek and sexy and very comfortable to hold and work with. Our red review unit drew polarized opinions, but we like it. Our only complaint is that the fingerprint sensor is too close to the top.
Samsung gifts this affordable phone with an AMOLED display, but the problem here is that the resolution is only HD+ (which is more worrying since it’s an OLED display). This was something we were worried about going into the review, but using the phone first-hand put our minds at ease.
Yes, our trained eyes can make out soft edges and blurry text, but HD resolution on a phone screen. But yeah, it’s definitely something we can live with.
The AMOLED panel offers excellent contrast, close to neutral white, and the option to choose from 4 preset colors (primary is our personal favorite). The screen isn’t sharp enough, but it’s easy on the eyes, well calibrated, and nice to look at.

Samsung follows a very strange nomenclature for its Exynos chips. The Exynos 7904 (Galaxy M20, M30, A30) is actually weaker than the Galaxy 7885, but still better than the Exynos 7884 that powers the Galaxy A20.
The phone comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of native storage. There is a dedicated card slot that you can use to add additional microSD storage.
In short, the Galaxy A20 is primarily intended for very simple users. Performance isn’t fast, but we didn’t encounter any stuttering in day-to-day use. Casual games are playable but hardcore stuff doesn’t work well.
Software, on the other hand, is considered a core strength. Samsung’s new One user interface is great and very easy to navigate or get used to. We are quite impressed with the redesign and great animations, and the user interface is very well optimized. Like all recently launched Samsung phones, the Galaxy A20 supports HD streaming on Amazon Prime and Netflix.

The fingerprint sensor can recognize and point fingers very quickly, but the screen takes an extra second (or fraction of a second) to wake up. Face unlock is reasonably quick, but not lightning fast.
In terms of call quality, we didn’t have any issues with calls. Dual 4G VoLTE is supported, but the Galaxy A20 lacks dual-band Wi-Fi support.
The Galaxy A20 benefits from all the work Samsung has done to perfect its camera software over the years. The performance of the camera turned out to be quite good considering the price.
The phone has a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP secondary wide-angle camera. With proper lighting (both indoors and outdoors), the images clicked have reasonable detail and wide dynamic range. The colors are bright without being overwhelming.

The Galaxy A20 can lock focus quickly outdoors, but not indoors. The camera struggles with metering in difficult shots or with background light sources.
In low light, details are noticeable and there is visible noise, but the camera software is smart enough to produce usable photos.
The wide-angle camera can be used to zoom out and shoot landscapes, but there’s some distortion around the edges that can be a little distracting.
Portrait mode (live focus) only works when the camera detects a face nearby. It’s mostly software-based and seems a bit unsatisfying.

Overall, the Galaxy A20’s camera performance is far from impressive, but perhaps acceptable for the price.
The Galaxy A20 has a 4000mAh battery with fast charging support. Battery life is excellent and we can last more than a day most days.
There is a fast charger in the box. In case you didn’t know, Samsung is a little tight-lipped about fast-charging phones. Its adaptive fast charging reaches up to 15W, even for flagships like the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S10. So yes, fast charging is moderately fast, but it’s still considered a plus at this price. The battery charges up to 35 percent in the first 30 minutes and takes less than two hours to fully charge.
In terms of specifications, the Galaxy A20 is outclassed by models like the Realme 3 Pro and Redmi Note 7 that fall in the price segment. That said, if users were to experience all three phones in a closed room with no idea of their specs, many would be inclined to go for the Galaxy A20.

This is because of the solid impression it leaves. The design is beautiful, the phone is compact and comfortable, the One UI software is very nice and the AMOLED screen is beautiful. At the same time, the choice of chipset and performance settings limits the phone to very basic users, especially if you’re considering the Galaxy A20 in 2020.

Despite your concerns, we encourage you to check out Samsung’s budget offerings. While the company’s low-end phones haven’t been able to compete with any of the best phones of the past, newer models like the Samsung Galaxy A51 and this Galaxy A20 adopt some of the elements found in Samsung’s more expensive devices. But these features now appear in a more affordable package.
As the Galaxy A20 shows, you still make some compromises in performance, design and screen quality. But Samsung’s latest budget phone also takes good photos and has a long-lasting battery, making this device an intriguing choice for buyers on a budget.
