It’s 2021 and we already have the S21 trio of Samsung high-end phones to review. At the other end of the Galaxy spectrum is the Galaxy A12 (12, not 21) – an entry-level phone designed to offer the Samsung experience, on a budget.

Launched late last year and available since January, the Galaxy A12 isn’t the cheapest phone Samsung sells – the Galaxy M02 earned that title. The Samsung name is a little unclear at the bottom and one can understand what is between the A and M series, but the A12 sits below the M12 and above the M02. Not all of these models are available worldwide, so you may or may not be able to pick up the cheapest Samsung in your particular area.

The Galaxy A12 we have here is equipped with a 6.5-inch screen and the effect of budget restrictions is easy to see. It’s one of the few LCDs in the OLED-dominated Galaxy lineup, and the 720p resolution is also on the lower side of average for the diagonal. It’s a reasonable model in terms of size, technology and resolution for the segment, so the A12 isn’t really a problem.
The Mediatek Helio P35 does the math in the A12 and it’s not a particularly exciting feature of the device itself. Again, it’s amazing for the price – you’re getting an octa-core CPU and the chip is built on the 12nm manufacturing process, so it should be powerful as well as spending a lot of money at the same time.
The quad camera setup on the back is good for the Galaxy A12 in its business context. Although the usefulness of the two 2MP modules is debatable (one for depth information, the other for ‘macro’), the 48MP main camera and 5MP ultra-wide make a good tandem that is hard to find. An 8 MP selfie camera completes the picture in the photography department.
Another important thing – the Galaxy A12 is powered by a 5000 mAh battery, which is a lot of battery for a 12nm entry-level chipset and a 720p display, 6.5-inch as it will be. We expect strong numbers for battery life.

It differs from most of its brothers as it is one of the few Samsung phones to have an IPS panel instead of AMOLED, the latter being clearly too expensive for its target market.

And while the panel doesn’t have an OLED upgrade, the Galaxy A12 does bring some upgrades over its predecessor. For example, there is a small bump in the screen size – up to 6.5 “Snapdragon 450 is replaced by MediaTek Helio P35 SoC, which makes the clock speed of four Cortex-A53 cores. The memory configuration is more than 3GB / 32GB to 6GB / 128GB.
We expect the biggest improvement in the camera department. The 13MP sensor has been replaced by a larger 48MP imager. The 48MP Quad-Bayer (or Tetracell using Samsung’s term) sensors help improve image quality in the mid-range, and it’s great to see it now drop to entry-level.
The 5MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera and 2MP depth sensor are carried over from the Galaxy A11 and there’s a new addition although it might not be much different – a dedicated 2MP macro shooter.
The teardrop notch on the front houses the 8MP f/2.2 selfie camera. It’s surprising to see Samsung change from a punch-hole display to a notch-like display, but performance is more important and we’ll make sure to expand on it in a future review.

Another big improvement is the battery capacity. The Galaxy A12 has a 5,000mAh unit compared to the A11’s 4,000mAh so we expect a big boost in endurance. 15W charging doesn’t sound great, but it’s not bad for an entry-level phone. And unlike the latest premium phones, it comes with the requisite charger in the box.
Sitting comfortably in the sub-€150 range, we want to know how the Galaxy A12 performs in our usual tests and how it compares to its direct competitors.

Samsung announced its Galaxy A12 as a direct successor to the Galaxy A11 in November 2020 before bringing it to the US in April 2021. It was replaced by the Galaxy A13 series.
The Galaxy A12 has a total of six different configurations to match one of the best Samsung phones in the world, starting with just 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. However, only three are currently available in the United States (listed above). No matter where you go, you still have access to four color options – red, blue, black and white.
Our Samsung Galaxy A12 arrives with Android 10, although an update to Android 11 with Samsung’s One UI 3.1 is available via OTA. It also ran the July 1, 2021 Android security patch during testing. It should receive two years of software updates, as well as a full four years of security patches, which will carry the Galaxy A12 until late 2024 or early 2025. RAM and storage options are maxed out at 6GB and 128GB respectively, and you can go further with a microSD slot. A 5000 mAh battery and a 6.5-inch HD+ panel tie it all together, and the display can be completed with an Infinity-V notch. In India, there is a variant that swaps the Helio P35 for Samsung’s own Exynos 850 chipset.
Samsung has removed the earphones from the packaging this time, although it still has a charging port and a USB-C cable. You also get a SIM eject tool and a boot guide if you need help booting up. Samsung’s Galaxy A12 is also available on Verizon, UScellular and AT&T.
It seems that budget phones are almost certainly adding glass backs and magnetic fingerprint scanners to provide that air of quality. Thankfully, Samsung’s Galaxy A12 bucks the trend, opting instead for a matte finish that feels soft in the hand. I also appreciate the raised diagonal legs, as they add a bit more grip to the whole build.
