The Sony X690E (KD-70X690E) is large, over 5 feet wide and offers plenty of viewing space. As Ultra HD resolution makes larger screens viewable thanks to higher pixel density, the price of 4K panels has dropped very quickly, making extra-large TVs more affordable than ever. And this size makes the viewing experience more immersive.
But there’s more to a TV than size, and the X690E left us wanting more performance, more smart TV features, and a better overall experience.
The 70-inch Sony looks great, with a fairly thin black bezel around the screen and an understated design. The TV chassis has a gloss black finish around the frame and a flat black finish on the back. Everything is made of usable but not particularly premium black plastic.
At a full 70 inches (measured diagonally, corner to corner), the X690E is the largest TV we’ve put into our labs, offering even more viewing space than the 65-inch Vizio SmartCast M-Series M65-E0 and 65-inch Samsung MU7000.

But this brings some challenges of its own. At 61.7 x 35.5 x 3.7 inches, the 70-inch X690E can’t go anywhere. Wall mounting is an option – the TV supports mounting with a 400 x 400mm VESA mount – but if you want to place it on an entertainment unit or table, you’ll need to make sure you have the necessary clearance.
The included stand is made of sturdy black plastic with a matte finish and has a square U-shaped footprint that measures 25 inches wide by 12 inches deep. It’s small enough to fit a standard entertainment unit, but you’ll still need to make sure you have enough clearance on either side to accommodate the 62-inch width of the TV.
You’ll also want to make sure you have room for comfortable viewing, as such a large TV can overwhelm a smaller apartment or living room and make you feel like you’re sitting in the front row of a movie theater. According to our TV screen size guide, the ideal viewing distance for a 70-inch screen is 6 feet.

The more accessible of the two sits about 8 to 10 inches from the edge of the screen and features two HDMI ports (one with ARC), an RF antenna jack, and three USB ports.
Another rear-facing panel at the back includes connections for a third HDMI port, composite video, and Ethernet for network connectivity. The set also has built-in 802.11ac Wi-Fi, allowing you to keep your smart TV online without a wired connection.
The X690E’s good-enough picture quality doesn’t quite match the expectations you might have from a cinema screen. The colors are bright and vivid, but they are also oversaturated and slightly skewed. And the overall color reproduction is not as vibrant as it could be, due to a slightly low color gamut.
Watching the trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story, I was struck by the flashes of color, whether it was Lando Calrissian’s yellow shirt, a villain’s blood-red cape, or the red and blue glow of sci-fi planes.

More specific performance tests showed realistic skin tones in films like Arrival, where much of the film focuses on human faces. Whether it was Amy Adams or Forest Whitaker on screen, the face looked clear and realistic.
Interestingly, the X690E only has three main display settings: Standard, Vivid and Custom. Additional modes, such as Cinema and Game modes, are available, but they are in a separate menu in Settings, called Scene Selection.
Most TVs have poor color accuracy in normal mode, but are much better in cinema mode. However, in the X690E’s case, performance was better in Standard mode, with a Delta-E score of 8.2 (closer to zero is better). This is actually not out of character for this situation; The Vizio M65-E0 had a Delta-E of 10.4 at similar settings, and the Sony XBR-X900E hit 8.7. However, these two sets also had much better numbers in different display modes (1.4 and 2.1, respectively).
Color gamut, on the other hand, is good but not great, with the X690E reproducing 99.2 percent of the Rec 709 color space. While other sets come in with higher percentages (the Samsung MU7000 65-inch scored 99.8 and the Vizio M65-E0 scored a solid 100, still high enough).

Viewing angles are quite wide, with slight color changes about 45 degrees off-center, which isn’t bad. Even smaller panels, like the 55-inch Samsung MU6300, are large enough to cause some color shift even if you don’t change the viewing angle, but that’s not the case with the 70-inch Sony.
Low-light environments were dark enough, but not so inky black that shadowy scenes were hard to see. A shady alley in Deadpool, for example, was dark, but you could still clearly see details like the bricks on the wall and small touches in the characters’ costumes. In contrast, most OLED displays offer the deepest blacks available on screen, but they often crush the blacks in dark images, leaving blurry details and near-black elements that are hard to discern. The backlight has some shadows in the corners of the panel. But they are pretty minor, and I actually expected them to be worse.
The X690E’s audio quality was pretty good, thanks to a pair of 10-watt speakers. The overall volume was strong, easily filling our test lab, whether we were watching The Price Is Right or the Avengers: Infinity War trailer.
When we listened to Deadmau5’s “Seeya,” clarity was very good, with 20 to 70 percent volume in ideal performance. At this range, bass levels were as good as you’d get without a subwoofer, and treble was crisp and clear, with Colin D’Agostino’s vocals undistorted.

Anything above 70 percent started to sound distorted. The bass lost its bounce, vocals sounded thin and distant, and when cranked to 85 percent, the TV chassis began to resonate, causing a slight hum.
The X690E’s menus are pretty opaque, and while basic picture mode and brightness are easy to find, other settings aren’t. We’ve already mentioned the difficulty of finding the various picture modes, with some modes available directly in the display settings, and others, including movie, game and sports modes, requiring you to find a separate settings menu, under the confusing name Scene Selection. . But this is far from the only point of confusion or irritation in these menus.
To turn HDR functionality on and off, for example, we first had to go into the settings for each HDMI port, then enable HDR input from an external device. If you don’t enable this feature first, you’ll only be able to receive HDR content from streaming sources, even if it’s your Sony PlayStation 4 Pro, which supports HDR. It’s a particularly cumbersome way to deal with one of the set’s main selling points.
Compared to the Android TV options offered on other Sony Bravia TVs, the Opera operating system on this smart TV is a real disappointment.

Then there is the choice of a smart TV platform. This model line uses Sony’s Internet TV platform, which is a very bland name for Opera’s smart TV platform with a custom skin. Compared to the Android TV options offered on other Sony TVs, this is a real disappointment. You can use the tile icon layout, but to get more apps, you have to go through the Opera TV app first.
The selection of applications is not large. While the TV comes with familiar apps like Amazon Video, Crackle, Hulu, Netflix and YouTube pre-installed, you’ll be hard-pressed to find other apps you’ll want. The quality of the selection drops considerably, and you’ll soon find yourself looking at apps that consist entirely of public domain movies, foreign language content, and amateur comedy shows that are more suited to YouTube. The usual network and studio viewing options that you would know are almost completely absent.
Opera has some gaming content, but it has the same mediocre features. Notable apps promoted in Opera’s app launcher include games like Rock Swapper and Pentominoes, low-cost knockoffs of Bejeweled and Tetris, respectively.
