While video buffs and serious gamers may be better served by high-end LCD or OLED models, we recommend the TCL 5 Series Roku TV (S555) for anyone who wants a really good 4K HDR TV that isn’t a heavy investment. The 5 Series offers a bright, dynamic image and a healthy load of welcome extras.
This Roku-based TV offers a decent picture for the price and supports the latest gaming features. But it can’t be as bright as high-end LCD TVs and only has a 60Hz refresh rate.
The TCL Series 5 Roku TV (S555) continues the tradition of the company’s previous Series 5 models and offers advanced TV technology that ensures a great picture at a reasonable price. It’s brighter than similarly priced models, though not as bright as a high-end LCD TV. It wasn’t an easy task for us to decide between our top picks and the Google TV U6H series from Hisense. In terms of price and hardware, the U6H ticks the right boxes: this series offers the same advanced technology as our top picks and produces a beautiful picture overall. But in our benchmark tests, the U6H fell short of our top pick in overall brightness and in its ability to show shadow detail in even darker movie scenes.
That said, you might prefer this TV to the TCL 5 Series if you’re gaga for Google, and especially if you prefer Cinematographer Mode, a picture mode set for maximum precision (and one the 5 Series lacks).
However, if you want a TV that looks good in different lighting conditions, keep in mind that the Hisense U6H does not have a backlight to perform better in a bright room.

When it comes to budget 4K TVs, TCL’s Roku 5 Series TV (2022 release, model S555) is unmatched in sheer flexibility. Whether you enjoy watching movies and TV, spending your downtime playing games, or simply want easy access to a large selection of streaming apps, the Series 5 has just about everything you could want of a modern television. It’s not the best at anything, but for the price, this TV is good enough in many situations, so it’s a great choice for the vast majority of potential buyers.
It offers above-average image quality. The 5 Series has the technology to achieve better black levels and overall dynamic range. Although the 2022 version features fewer local dimming areas than the previous model, TCL has refined the local dimming feature enough that this TV consistently delivers satisfactory black levels while being bright enough to combat ambient light. During testing, I measured black levels as low as 0.025 nits, as well as a peak brightness of just 700 nits (during HDR playback), both excellent results for a TV in this price range.

The improved brightness is good for HDR performance. Not only does this TV have the brightness to create satisfying HDR images, but color is enhanced with quantum dots to deliver noticeable enhancements to the red and green primary colors. It also supports the most popular HDR formats: HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.
In Dolby Vision on the TCL 5 Series and Hisense U6H side by side, I paused the opening scene of Tom Cruise lying in a helicopter with the sun streaming in through the window and asked my wife which TV was better. He said the U6H’s window gave the impression of light, while the Series 5’s window looked like real light, a telling enough explanation for the brightness and uniformity of the two TVs.
