In this article, I will talk about my experience with Verizon 5G Home Internet, a wireless solution for home Internet access. Note, this is not the same as Verizon FIOS, which is a fiber optic cable solution.

A few days after I ordered the service, I received a Verizon Home Internet Gateway, a clean white cube with a power plug and two Ethernet ports and no cable going to Verizon!
I didn’t know about this when I ordered the service, but the unit includes a built-in Wi-Fi router! I like the fact that the box has two Ethernet ports. This makes it unnecessary for a large number of people to purchase an additional router.
Setup is stupidly easy. I plugged in the power and waited for it to boot and set up. When it was done, I connected the Ethernet cable from the gateway to the computer and used the web app to set the Wi-Fi network name and password. Voila! I was up and running within minutes! Wonderful!
The Verizon Internet Gateway web interface displays your Wi-Fi band settings. The default is Basic with lane routing enabled, which means it determines which lanes to use.

I measured 300Mbps download speed right away! I was surprised that he basically got this from a cell phone signal!
I have been using the service for a month and the download speed has been stable at 220 to 240 mbps. Still better than cable for me.

For the past year my cable download speed has been around 90Mbps, probably because the coax cable in my house is deteriorating. This was one of the things that made me like the wireless internet solution.
I should point out that your mileage may vary depending on how far you live from the nearest cell towers and how many people are using that tower at the time.

Verizon 5g Home Internet: Everything You Need To Know
Since the Verizon Home Internet Gateway box includes a built-in Wi-Fi router, I went ahead and gave it a try. Within the first month, it reached my entire two-story house and my garage below it with good signal strength. A month later, my signal strength inexplicably dropped off a cliff. I noticed it when my outer ring cameras were disabled due to low Wi-Fi signal. Signal strength was good in my house.
In any case, I don’t really count it against Verizon, because I wouldn’t expect a built-in Wi-Fi router without external antennas to have as good a range as a dedicated Netgear router in a home with two floors. Three external antennas!
If you live in a one-bedroom apartment or a one-story house, a built-in Wi-Fi router is probably best for you. It probably works in two-story houses.
However, the low online ratings for Verizon Home Internet stem from complaints about Wi-Fi range. Also, a built-in gateway router isn’t meant to be as good as a dedicated Wi-Fi router with external antennas that you can get at Best Buy. If you live in a large multi-level home, you’ll probably want to use a dedicated router made by Netgear, Asus, or other reputable manufacturers.

Additionally, I’ve read that the onboard Wi-Fi router is limited to 10 devices on 2.4GHz and 30 devices on 5.0GHz. Again, the solution is to connect your own Wi-Fi router as described next.
You’ll want to do this using a device with an Ethernet port (ie, don’t rely on Wi-Fi to do these settings). The reason is that you disable Wi-Fi on your gateway, and if something goes wrong and you need to restart it, the only way to do that is to use Ethernet.

As soon as I submitted my order for service, I received an email to create a Verizon account online. When I tried to do this, the website did not recognize my device phone number or account number. I called Verizon customer service and they advised me to wait for the gateway to arrive and set it up before setting up the account.

So I did that but got the same error. My account was locked when I tried to log in multiple times, so I called again and they reset my account. Unfortunately, the reset code had to be sent via regular US mail because the phone number on file was my gateway, unable to receive text messages. Ah!
After that I can finally login to the site and set up automatic billing (which you need to do to get the $10 monthly discount on the service). But, I still couldn’t connect to the iPhone app. I called again and they reset my account again, meaning waiting for another code via email.
That didn’t solve the problem either. At this time, I have resigned from using the website. When I tried to change some settings like contact phone number it timed out. I was only able to change this by calling customer service again.
This was just my experience; I know others have experienced creating accounts with no problems. My problems may be due to the fact that I had a Verizon Wireless cell phone account a long time ago because I saw this message on the website: “This email is linked to another line on this account. You must log in to that line to manage your preferences.” I guess it is confused with my old account.

To their credit, it’s always pretty easy to get a Verizon customer service agent on the phone, which can’t be said for all ISPs.
Despite the headache of setting up the account, I still love Verizon’s true 5G internet service. So far, it’s been fast, reliable, and trouble-free.
I think CATV uses coaxial cable to send high speed data, making it as obsolete as DSL. With DSL, data is sent over analog phone lines, which are not intended for this purpose. Also via cable, high-speed data is sent over coaxial originally intended for analog TV signals. I think the current ideal methods for sending high speed data are fiber or 5G
