Home Wi-Fi speeds are tricky at the best of times, but after testing the UK’s 5G home broadband package this week, I’ve become particularly superstitious. I tried using different Wi-Fi access points, moved the modem, and switched between my phone, laptop, and desktop to run speed tests. I even became obsessive about checking Ookla’s access to SpeedTest’s servers, just in case my results were in doubt.
Three launched UK 5G home broadband services on 19 August. While EE and Vodafone are focusing their launches on 5G mobile (with 5G broadband plans playing a supporting role), Three initially plans to replace basic internet with 5G services.
It’s a different approach, but I think it makes a lot of sense as 5G is in its infancy. This approach not only eliminates the need to include one of the larger batteries seen in the first generation of 5G phones, but also means you can use 5G faster. You can transfer large files to your mobile phone in seconds, but most modern apps are designed to run on 4G, so the benefits of 5G speeds won’t matter over time. Home broadband is different because more people are using the same internet connection. Individual services may not be designed to take full advantage of 5G, but when multiple people are using them at the same time, you’ll experience significant benefits. You also want to stream things like 4K video at home rather than on a mobile device.
All three start small with a 5G rollout. At launch, the service is only available in parts of London’s Camden, Camberwell and Southwark areas, but the network hopes to offer 5G in 24 more locations by the end of the year. Again, the carrier promises to cover only “parts” of these seats, but it’s not yet clear which parts they will cover.

If you live in one of the smaller areas where Three offers its service, you can sign up for 5G broadband for £35 (about $42) a month. This price covers the cost of Three’s 5G router and includes unlimited data as well as UK broadband packages. In comparison, if you get the HE 5G Hub from EE, you can expect to pay £50 a month for 50GB of internet or £75 a month for 100GB. Vodafone offers the same unlimited data as Three, but you’ll have to pay £50 a month for it, and Vodafone advertised this price as an introductory offer.
My router installation process was a little different than what the average customer experiences, as Tri sent an engineer to my home to install the router and find the best location for me in my apartment. However, regular customers will get the company’s Huawei 5G CPE Pro modem/router, which they can install themselves. The company’s 5G marketing is that its service is “No Engineer. No. “So I think they did one of two things with me.
Depending on the lighting in your area, this may or may not be a problem. Whether it was because the 5G network was launched that day, or because I live in a suburb of London covered by Trinity’s 5G network, it took an engineer a while to find a place for the hub in my flat. At first we tried to put it on the table in the living room. Then we tried moving her into my bedroom. We were sitting on the bottom bookshelf in our living room. It seemed too high to maintain a good 5G signal, but also dropped it. This is the type of troubleshooting I’d be happy to do myself, but yours may differ. The hub has a little light that lights up when it’s connected to 5G, so you can use it to find the best spot in your home along with quick test services.
Overall, I liked the bundled Huawei 5G Triple router. Although the device is quite tall, it had a very small footprint on my bookshelf, and it was easier to find a place for it than my current carrier-supplied modem because I didn’t have to run a cable into my house. It also had a clean and simple web interface for changing basic router settings. Despite the UK not yet deciding whether to supply equipment to Huawei to build the country’s 5G infrastructure, the operators themselves have decided to offer the equipment to consumers. EE and Vodafone are now selling the Huawei Mate 20 X after revealing that they will not carry 5G phones. Vodafone sells the Huawei 5G router as the Three, but calls it the Gigacube.

The router is a small square tower that shows on the front that its 5G, 4G and Wi-Fi connections are active. There’s a pair of Ethernet ports on the back if you want to use a wired connection, and a phone port if you’re feeling a bit old-fashioned. If you’re going wireless, the router I got supports the latest Wi-Fi 6 standard, according to Huawei’s specs page, and automatically selects transmission over 2.4GHz and 5GHz. If this causes problems for your devices, you can change this setting through the router’s web interface (where you can also change the Wi-Fi password and credentials).
Of course, the most important aspect of upgrading to 5G is speed. After a week with the device, I found them to vary, sometimes by as much as 15 minutes. At first, when there was a 5G network left by the engineer, I thought the inconsistencies were due to using different speed test services on different devices. I could get a respectable 200 Mbps download when logged into Okla’s SpeedTest phone, but only 26 Mbps download from my laptop. When I tried to access Fast.com from my phone, I got a download speed of 150 Mbps, but when I used the Ookla SpeedTest it was as fast as 117 Mbps before going up to 190 Mbps. The speed was moderately fast (and the 5G indicator was on in each of these tests), but there was a lot of variability in its speed.
I then tried setting up a 5G network on a Netgear Orbi Wi-Fi network and ran speed tests with a desktop connected to one of the network’s satellites. I found a 5G network with NetGar Orbi settings without configuring anything. (This helped put my Orbi in hotspot mode from my previous setup.)
At this point, I learned how different Ookla’s SpeedTest servers can affect reported speeds. I had 274 Mbps download on my desktop and 12 Mbps download using one server, but the speed went to 423 Mbps download and 35 Mbps download, even though SpeedTest showed it was equal to mine, their pings were the same. When I switched back to my first provider, the speed dropped to 208 MB/s for download and 43 MB/s for upload. (Tri tells me that this is a slower download speed because only 25 percent of the spectrum is allocated for the link, and this is the same for all networks).

Then I tried to find a place in my apartment that offered consistent speeds. The Open Signal app, which shows nearby cell towers, doesn’t seem to be updated with 5G data, but a look at it showed that a 5G cell tower might be behind my apartment. I also live very close to an elevated railway line which can interfere with 5G signal.
To try to solve both of these problems, I moved the centerpiece to the top of the bookcase in the back of the apartment to get a direct view of the cell tower I envisioned. After some really miserable tests below 20 Mbps, the speed dropped from 100 to 200 Mbps. Even now, like me
