Portrait mode artificially blurs the background, which requires depth perception. The LiDAR sensor provides this with beams.
I found Apple’s portrait mode to be subtle and generally better than modes I’ve seen on competing flagship phones. It often masks the subject well and has good focus behind the subject. The most aggressive portrait modes I’ve seen look amazing; The subject is sharp, and everything else, even the chair they’re sitting in, is blurry beyond recognition. This is not what real life looks like.
The LiDAR sensor is officially claimed to enable portrait mode at night, but I feel like it already contributes to better portrait photos overall.
