You’d be forgiven for abandoning the memoir concept for the past two years. Thanks to the pandemic, nothing was planned. And when we weren’t stuck inside, we had a lot of last moments.

Nothing says a new beginning like a new journal, and we have high hopes that this year we’ll be able to make full use of it.

We checked each diary first for aesthetics – did it look attractive? What is it made of? Was it heavy? How was the layout – one day per page or one week per page?
The paper was also important, was it of good quality? We used both a pen and a rollerball to see how easy it was to write on, and noticed something extra special about each journal – and anything less than impressive.

Heavy and chunky and not one to pop up discreetly in your purse, this planner means business with a page-a-day format and a sleek monochrome cover (although different designs are available). We love the large circular binding – it makes turning pages easy, and laying the notebook flat is easy.
What we liked most were the incentives that encouraged users to share what they were grateful for or if there was a birthday to remember. There is also an inspirational quote on each page, which can never hurt one’s motivation. There is water intake and also exercise and meditation trackers. We’ve found that these unchecked boxes really helped us make better, healthier choices.

Smythson’s Diaries never fails to be truly charming and special – even its pocket-sized offerings have their heft. Especially this bright red beauty complete with a pen.
Everything about it speaks luxury, from the cross-stitched lambskin cover to the gilded featherweight paper. We loved that this one even fit in a small purse and didn’t feel presumptuous about putting it on the table at meetings and waiting for compliments.
Simple, fun and luxurious, this journal will be a great companion for the coming year. Its soft, leather-covered cover can be personalized with initials, names or even a message and offers a weekly format for display, which in turn makes room for an extensive to-do list. On the back there is a 26-page notes section.
We love the gold edged pages which look so lovely and make this journal perfect as a gift, not least because it comes in a pretty hard box, all tied up in a bow.
Posy Paper Planner Review (horizontal Weekly Layout + Pen Testing)
This bright, juicy shade is just what a dreary January calls for. We love this light and slim outline. The pages are made of note paper, which is a bit strange. They are also neatly tied so that they lie flat when opened.
With a spread of two pages per week, there is plenty of room for meetings and notes, if not complete journal entries.
The Dodo Pad has been a firm favorite for anyone with a wild life and a taste for the exotic since 1966. You won’t write your diary in the Dodo Pad – it’s all about planning. Each week is presented as a grid where each day contains a row with five columns. This is perfect for those who have different parts of their life (for example work, home, gym and creativity).
The entire book related to the episode is covered in bright, fun illustrations and full-page colors. It’s a pleasure to use and for extra fun this year’s diary comes with a set of stickers for decoration or coded strategy planning.

It runs for 13 months, giving keen planners more time to look ahead. Interior Design has a week for each show, but there are pages dedicated to monthly overviews and goal setting, which is a great way to dip your toes into the world of goal-oriented planning.
This is for anyone who doesn’t have a PA IRL, but wants one. It’s a thick, hefty size that promises to improve the user’s work, social life and health.
Yes, it offers a “normal” diary format, but there’s more to it. Much more. It invites you to set daily, weekly and monthly goals. Allows for a monthly social media plan. There are pages dedicated to a gratitude journal and more that continue to serve as a “vault of inspiration.”
