But before we look, there’s the matter of plugging things in, and we spend time checking whether a 4K Blu-ray player has a bare-bones single HDMI, or twin HDMI to separate sound and vision, plus multi-channel analog. . Panasonic’s DP-UB9000 flagship 4K Blu-ray player is the most ambitious player we’ve tested from the Japanese brand, and for AV enthusiasts investing in this flagship 4K player is a no-brainer.
The DP-UB9000 offers best-in-class UHD video performance, thanks to the highest image processing technology, as well as its HDR support covering HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision formats. The images it produces display both great detail and maximum smoothness for its second-generation HCX, and we found that the player also did a competent job upscaling HD Blu-ray discs.
Our reviewer tested the player with a mid-range TV and found the results convincing, so paired with a premium TV should show better performance from the Panasonic player.
This Pana player also has a level of construction that belies its (high) price; Disc-loading speed is decent while loading is smooth and quiet. Connectivity is extensive, with dual HDMI outputs (one audio only), two USBs (one fast v3.0), and optical and coaxial digital audio outputs, as well as a full 7.1 analog channel output. There are also balanced Neutrik XLR stereo connections and Ethernet on hand to support internal Wi-Fi.

When it comes to audio, it sounds good – not as audiophile in quality as the now-discontinued Pioneer UDP-LX500, but still impressive. If you’re looking for DVD-Audio and SACD support, unfortunately the Panasonic doesn’t have it. Still, if you want the best performance, the UB9000 rules the 4K player market.
If you have a TV that supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+ or both, and you want to see your 4K collection presented at its best, the Panasonic DP-UB820 among 4K player options under £500 / $500 more closely guarantees research Above its cheaper DP-UB450 sibling.
It has the same second-generation HCR processor that is included in the flagship model, which helps to produce a performance that we have found to be excellent with UHD discs, as well as making standard Blu-ray discs look beautifully sharp. Colors are more accurate and detailed than rival disc spinners, and with Panasonic’s Optimizer feature, brightness and contrast can be boosted without washing out the image, which our reviewer found made viewing HDR content in bright rooms more satisfying.
Picture quality is complemented by a decent selection of streaming apps, although the user interface could use an overhaul. It is a classy frontman for a Dolby Atmos home cinema. We found it worthwhile to experiment with a digital tube-up sampler while playing CDs. It has a number of filters that mimic the warmth of tube amplification and make our reviewer’s CD collection even more homely.

Build quality is fine, and more in line with Panasonic’s entry-level players, the flagship UB9000 sporting finishes that lack premium metal. We found the player quite presentable for the asking price. A remote is provided, but if lost on the couch, the player itself has manual buttons for power and disk loading.
Despite its cheap build quality, the UBP-X700 retains many of the same features as the discontinued UBP-X800, but actually includes support for Dolby Vision HDR this time around. It’s gone up over £200 in price since we first reviewed it, but we still think it’s a great choice for those who want an Ultra HD Blu-ray player that can deliver excellent video and audio .
We found the imaging performance to be terrible. UHD discs were perfectly reproduced in minute detail, the wide color spectrum and high dynamic range (HDR) of 4K discs were all perfectly reproduced by Sony. Images are sharp and detailed with natural colors and no apparent artifacts. Our reviewer found that Spinner even performed great with SDR content, getting the most out of every pixel.
The UBP-X700 is a digital transport (no analog output), which means there is no DAC inside, only a digital signal fed through the HDMI or coaxial digital output. Opt for HDMI and benefit from lossless audio and immersive Dolby Atmos and DTS:X soundtracks. While the X700 may not be the audiophile’s choice, we found it capable of delivering a quality experience with CDs, SACDs or streaming.

There is one downside to this more affordable price compared to more premium players, which is that the build of the X700 can feel flimsy compared to the UBP-X800M2. It is a fairly cheap and largely plastic player, but if you do not leave the player out in the open, it is unlikely to cause too much concern.
The DP-UB450 is the only player to feature HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support, making it a consumer-friendly player for anyone looking for an affordable 4K Blu-ray player.
Our reviewer didn’t find the build quality anything to write home about. It’s light, and the metal chassis makes it feel slim, giving it a rather anonymous look. Like the UB820, there are a few buttons for power and disc loading in case the remote is lost.
Connectivity isn’t as extensive as the UB450’s top spinners on this list, with just two HDMI connections for separate video and audio signals, Ethernet LAN and a coaxial digital output. There’s no array of 7.1-channel analog line-outs for home cinema speaker set-ups, nor any streaming apps in the UB450’s sparse menu interface.

The price drop means the UB820’s HCX processor is no longer among the features, but our reviewer still found picture quality to be good value for money, although it lacks the sharpness and accuracy of the step-up Panasonic player.
