Top Of The Line Gaming Headsets – JBL is finally entering the gaming business. The longtime speaker maker is launching its “Quantum” line of gaming audio gear this spring, consisting of seven gaming headsets and a set of desktop speakers at various price points. At the top, Quantum One shows it has what it takes to compete and excel as a headphone maker. Delivering quality sound and offering top bells and whistles like head tracking and active noise cancellation, the Quantum One shows JBL really knows how to calibrate its audio expertise for gaming.
DES AND FEATURES Quantum One’s DES headset splits the distinction between a “gamer” style and a traditional, minimal audio look to create a soft, synthetic cyberpunk aesthetic. Although the body is made of molded black plastic, the Quantum has colorful accents scattered throughout—earcups with bright orange “R” and “L” painted on fabric and RGB lighting scheme three sections on the sides of the compartment. ,

It has a solid, if a little loose, fit. The upper band is quite wide, so it takes a bit of pressure to hold the headset in place, but there is no feeling of pressure. While it fits me well, I can also find it a bit loose at the short ends. Both the upper band and the earcups are comfortably padded with leather-wrapped synthetic memory foam cushions: although it feels heavy, the 369 grams never weigh me down.

Looking closely at the compartment, there are plenty of inputs and I/Os. Everything is on the left side, including a powerful set of built-in controls: a mic mute button, a volume dial, a quick head-tracking recalibration button, and a “talk through” button to turn off noise cancellation active. You also get a port for the mic, a 3.5mm jack for connecting directly to the console, and a USB-C port for connecting via USB, which you’ll need to use head tracking. The USB-C to USB-A cable also contains a simple game audio/chat mixer, which is useful when calibrating audio in multiplayer.
Speaking of which, the Quantum One’s active noise cancellation sounds like a big upgrade, even if it’s not new or innovative technology. Active noise cancellation, which plays low-frequency tones to block out ambient sounds, is relatively common in high-end headphones, but rarely finds its way into gaming headsets. However, it should be: Blocking outside noise makes it easy to hear the nuances of the game’s sound (or music or Netflix). Even when I was playing alone in a quiet room, it blocked the sound of my PC or console fan: I didn’t realize how distracting that sound could be until I don’t go to work a week without listening to it.
Inside the cabin, the Quantum One houses 50mm drivers, delivering big, sleek sound. There are specs to back this up in principle, though I don’t think there’s a single factor that directly translates to better sound: at 114dB, the Quantum One is more sensitive than headphones. medium, which means it’s louder (and possibly clearer) than the lows. It has the same 20-40,000Hz “Hi-Res” frequency response you’ll find in high-end headsets, but rarely seen in gaming headsets. These are strong indicators of quality, but ultimately the proof is in the sound. While many headphones, even the good ones, are a bit bassy and can get a little fuzzy when too loud, everything that comes out of the Quantum One sounds well-balanced and clear.
Perhaps a real low point of the Quantum One is its detachable microphone. The small, compact gear lever is wrapped in a rubberized plastic that doesn’t look like a high-end product. It works fine, but it’s fine. I often have trouble getting the headset mic exactly where I want it to be, but finding the best position with the Quantum One mic can be especially challenging since you don’t have a lot of bendable arms to maneuver.

SoftwareJBL has created a new configuration application, QuantumEngine, for its Quantum line of gaming headsets. The app allows you to adjust the audio mix in your headphones and save custom sound profiles, in addition to the built-in settings available out of the box. For Quantum One, this app is essential as it allows you to calibrate the spatial sound and head tracking of the headset, and configure the RGB lighting on the cup.
QuantumEngine looks neat and easy to navigate. Custom fields are clearly divided and each category fits on a single table. However, there are a surprisingly large number of settings to tweak. When viewing Sphere360 spatial audio, you can adjust the position of the virtual speakers, your body height, and the diameter of your head to adjust how the simulated sound affects you. While most headsets with RGB lighting have only one glow element, the Quantum has three customizable zones that can be set to follow many of the same patterns found on keyboards and mice.
That said, JBL is clearly still working on some aspects of the software. In most of my testing, head tracking seemed to lose its element too easily. It seems to have been fixed with a recent patch, but I still think it needs to be calibrated at startup. Calibrating it is easy and takes just a moment, but doing that step every time feels like an imposition.

Stable, reliable localized sound creates immersion in subtle yet surprising ways.
