I put the Canon EOS 80D first for a reason: it’s a quality work that has never let me down. Video quality is very good. It uses the ubiquitous Canon EF lens, so there are tons of lens options. It is reasonably priced. You don’t need to spend thousands on a full-frame camera to capture movie footage. Wrap it up with quality glass like the amazing Sigma 18-35mm ART lens and prepare to be amazed by the results. Yes, I love this camera (and its successor, the 70D).
One of the key features of the 80D that may make it the best choice for you over the other options I’ve listed below is its autofocus trick. Canon calls it Dual Pixel CMOS Auto-Focus. I use CineStyle from Technicolor (yes, the famous Technicolor film company) which results in a flat image with low contrast. I then use a LUT (lookup table) to process the image. Then I use the FilmConvert plugin (it works for a wide range of cameras including Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Blackmagic, RED and Nikon). Why bother? You get a bit more dynamic range (or acceptable dynamic range) and you get a more cinematic look and you avoid that horrible oversharpened camera look…it’s all worth it to me.
