The seventh limited edition release The Bond House No. 1 Collection, Glenmorangie Vintage 1997 has approx. 10 years in ex-Bourbon casks before a portion was transferred to Château Montrose red wine casks, from the Saint-Estèphe appellation in Bordeaux. This release is the first of many Kavalan whiskeys to make the top 15 and is quite artistic. According to the brand, this peated whiskey from Taiwan carries the fruits of the work of Kavalan and renowned artist Paul Chiang and the seeds of new growth.

This single cask whiskey was created to celebrate a milestone of Kavalan owner King Car. Aged in “Highly Exclusive” red wine casks, this limited edition marks 40 years with the King Car Company. Aged in a single red wine barrel and bottled at 56.3% vol with only a few dozen bottles being released in Australia.

The 2020 edition continues to focus on ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry matured whisky, with notes of “fresh lime, burnt tea leaves and smoked pineapple”.

A favorite of one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, Kilchoman’s Machir Bay is matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, creating a well-balanced combination of rich tropical fruits, peat smoke, light vanilla and intense sweetness.

Arberg returns to the winning table with An Oa, a whiskey described as “extraordinarily rounded”, thanks to the time it spent in the newly established Bespoke Oak Gathering Vat. This process allows the mind to become familiar with whiskeys of different types – including; dear Pedro Ximenez; sharp virgin charred oak; and intensive ex-bourbon barrels, among others.

Aberlour a’bunadh is a single batch single malt exclusively from the Speyside region. Straight from the cask without a chill filter and alcohol reduction, this whiskey is heavy and not for the faint of heart.

Rounding out the top 15 was another old favorite. Glenmorangie’s Quinta Ruban 14 Year Old is an intense unfiltered single malt that is first matured in bourbon casks. The spirit is then further matured or “finished” in port casks to create the chocolatey, mint notes of Quinta Ruban.

No surprises here, but Ardbeg managed to clean up, securing three of the five major prizes after a fantastic year in vintage releases.
