Set in a zombie-ravaged America, this desperately moving drama is a phenomenal combination of horror and heart, and the cast couldn’t be more perfect.
What if it wasn’t a flu-like virus that threatened humanity’s existence, but a parasitic fungus that used rising temperatures to evolve and switch hosts from ants to humans? That’s the terrifying premise of The Last of Us, another post-apocalyptic authority drama in a TV landscape understandably littered with end-game scenarios. While its zombie-like skeleton draws immediate comparisons to The Walking Dead, its beating heart is more in line with last year’s Station Eleven , with which it shares a surprisingly steady and meditative pulse.

Much has been made of its origins as a video game, in part because the source material seemed to offer the best chance yet for a compelling transition from console to screen. Game creator Neil Druckmann and Chernobyl showrunner Craig Mazin adapted the series, a combination he says could buck the trend of video game remakes in another form. (Thirty years later, Super Mario Bros. is still cited as a warning.)
But The Last of Us games offer more than a stylistic blueprint. They are heartbreaking, emotional and deep and full of action. Those familiar with the franchise will see recognizable scenes, locations and even dialogue. This adaptation doesn’t reinvent its source material, but why would it when the source material was so perfect?
However, those new to the game should feel safe entering this world. The series begins by introducing a parasitic fungus scenario as a hypothetical one discussed by experts on a talk show in the 1960s, before moving to 2003, when the worst-case scenario tears society apart. For the first half hour it’s an indie disaster movie that reminded me of late 90’s blockbusters like Deep Impact, Armageddon and 12 Monkeys. Then it changes again, to 2023 and beyond. What’s left of society is in the hands of an authoritarian military regime fighting rebel groups labeled terrorists, and it’s dark as hell.
Pedro Pascal is Joel, a 50-year-old Texan construction worker and semi-outsider in Boston’s quarantine zone, where he does shady maintenance jobs and has a side business in the underground market. Life is hard and merciless. Eventually, he meets Ellie (Bella Ramsey, another Game of Thrones foreigner), a 14-year-old girl he must transport west across the devastated United States. He could be the savior the world has been looking for.

The Last of Us is violent and maudlin. It depicts a world where people do whatever it takes to survive, with varying degrees of horror; sometimes encountering fast-moving, mushroom-dangling infected doesn’t even seem like the worst thing that could happen. Later in the series, in a terrifying episode, men, not monsters, prove capable of inflicting brutality far beyond the painful onslaught of zombie attacks.
However, he manages to find humanity in the ruins, and that makes it all worth it. Pascal is great, but Ramsey is phenomenal. He’s funny, grumpy and sharp, with a slightly awkward teenage physique. His acting is so genuine and believable that it doesn’t feel like acting at all. Watching the couple’s relationship develop and deepen is desperately moving. That he manages to resist the sentimental approach and still find such a soul is a real achievement.
There’s more to it than just Joel and Ellie, though, and she’s confident enough to leave them behind for a few episodes. In the third, which is almost a movie, we barely see the two main characters. Instead, it focuses on a survivor named Bill (Nick Offerman, playing a sort of Ron Swanson as a PhD in poetry) and his new relationship with an artist named Frank (White Lotus’ Murray Bartlett). It’s a wonderful detour to the wider world; as many reviewers have already said, it might be one of the best episodes of television you’ll see this year.
