The Last of Us publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment has sold more than 17 million copies of the post-apocalyptic action game, developer Naughty Dog announced today.
A Sony spokesperson said the figure includes units sold to customers. While the total represents sales as of April 2018, Naughty Dog announced the news today on Twitter, presumably because it’s the fifth anniversary of the game’s release.
It debuted on June 14, 2013 on the PlayStation 3 when the PlayStation division was known as Sony Computer Entertainment. Sony sold 7 million copies of the game in its first 13 months on store shelves.

It reached 1 million copies in sales within a month, and by September 2014 had sold at least 8 million copies on both platforms. This downright short-sighted cash grab will make fans of the series think long and hard about whether or not they can buy another version of a game they’ve probably had at least once, as much as they’ll enjoy it. Even newcomers are unlikely to find it a no-brainer buy, which it should be.
Ultimately, it’s a shame that a cynical commercial decision overshadows Naughty Dog’s artistic achievements, because in many ways The Last of Us Part 1 is an aesthetic and technological triumph. Early promotional materials promised that the game was built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS5’s processing power, and it’s hard to overstate how much the new background textures, character models, and animations add to the immersive experience.
The setting of Joel and Ellie’s first road trip to a post-apocalyptic North America was never intended for its atmosphere, but the generational leap in environmental detail creates an exponential basis for their reality, with cities that have been dead for decades now feeling truly inhabited. The lighting alone deserves to win some award.
Likewise, late game improvements can prove more difficult. The clunky interface of the original has been replaced by Part II’s more intuitive menus and sophisticated control systems that make combat more difficult than before, but the much-improved enemy AI can’t mask some of the game’s more questionable design decisions – there are many of them. Now it can only be seen after that.

Indeed, returning to the first installment after a supreme sequel can be an unexpectedly cathartic experience, showing just how much creative director Neil Druckmann and his team have learned over the years working on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and the excellent Left Behind. , The Last of Us narrative DLC episode, also here.

The highlights of Part 1 are indeed dizzying, but the overall ride isn’t as smooth as you remember, with expositional bits and action sequences not always finding a seamless rhythm. And there is a ruble in it. The Last of Us is undoubtedly one of the best games of the PS3 era, but it’s starting to feel its age – and beneath its beautiful next-gen brilliance, Part 1 is still essentially the same game. Which wouldn’t be a problem at all if it weren’t for the difficult price of the next generation.
