When Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan was installed, I couldn’t help but think: Which platinum do I get?

Will this creator of Bayonetta be the best class action game? …probably not; Our comment editor doesn’t like me very much. But can I hope for the platinum that made the basically solid and respectable Transformers: Devastation? Maybe?

Tmnt Mutants In Manhattan, Activision, Xbox One, 047875771413

After a six-hour campaign that was both staggeringly repetitive and insultingly repetitive, I’m sad to report that Mutants in Manhattan was crafted by Platinum, who brought us The Legend of Korra.

I’m not going to tell you the story. Turtles hate Shredder, Shredder hates Turtles, they all fight each other forever. Rhino Man and Warthog Boy are also there. They’re always there. Does a laser shredder take place? Maybe it’s Crang? None of them are important enough to be told. The cutscenes are probably more interesting than the loading screens they obscure, that’s the nicest thing I can say about them.

You fight waves of villains by controlling one of the four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and switching between them. They’re not fundamentally different, but Platinum has introduced a system called “Ninjutsu” that allows you to customize each turtle with ancient ninja arts like the healing pizza throw.

Each turtle can equip up to four of the 30 ninjutsu, giving you a lot of flexibility at the cost of performing your duties. Also, trying to remember which buttons and which turtles are equipped with 16 different ninja pieces in the heat of battle is a frustrating exercise.

In an annoying trend carried over from Transformers: Devastation, platinum piled up on several otherwise flawless systems. Each turtle can equip a stat-enhancing spell, and enchantments can be upgraded and removed, and none of the buffs are very good, so let’s not waste any more time on this sentence. Ninjutsu can also be upgraded, but for the same currency as unlocking new skills. I saw some valuable new abilities as I needed to score to keep up with the existing powers.

I could fill a review with all the weird and wacky things that have been injected into Manhattan Mutants to hide the fact that the base game is completely worthless. Unfortunately, I’ll have to scoff at Michelangelo’s misuse of the term “special fast ball” for later, so I’ll limit myself to one paragraph:

Turtles can knock down unsuspecting enemies with a single punch, but since enemies are rarely where four screaming, pizza-throwing Man-Man Turtles are, there isn’t much to hide. Turtles can rub against the wires and rails in several stages, but it’s never fun or fun. Turtles can climb walls, which doesn’t seem to serve any purpose other than making the environment look careless.

So what is all the mechanical window decorating trying to hide? Simply the blandest fighter I’ve played in recent memory.

Enemies keep coming and you have to hit them. Sometimes you need to defuse a bomb (hold the button when enemies are dead) or a terminal to hack (hold the button when enemies are dead). It’s never anything close to fun.

Oh, I take it back: three strokes, you spend 30 seconds rolling the ball into the hole. it was good

If you’re forced to play Mutants in Manhattan and are looking for a way to make it more enjoyable, suffering alongside friends (or random strangers) may be your best bet.

Each player takes one of the turtles, which is satisfyingly more expedient than trying to micro-manage three horrible AI partners. It also makes it easier to use skills in concert if other players know what they’re doing. With Coach-op it will be even easier. Unfortunately, this option has been removed

Regardless, playing with other people doesn’t solve any of the game’s core problems. No matter how many people come for the ride, it’s still a boring and paradoxically repetitive delay.

During this training, I was thoroughly taught how to handle myself. When the first stage of the game turned my TV into an inscrutable nightmarish collage of ninjas and neon lights, it was instantly hilarious and I began to worry that I had somehow inadvertently scratched a 13-year-old boy’s hypothalamus. There will be no conflict. If I could see my turtle on the screen, I would do it right.

This unintended joke is the only practical joke in the game. The vast majority of the Turtles’ dialogue is meant to be funny, and no single word makes more than a smile. But there are too many twists and turns. At one point, Michelangelo says, “That’s my specialty Fastball, dude!” When he throws a shuriken. Hey Mike I assure you this wasn’t your “special fastball” unless the last shuriken was your deceptive partner Shuriken Man. Dufus.

While the game’s script doesn’t favor the turtles, it at least makes them and their enemies look interesting with its brilliant animations and interesting character designs. Much of their impact is diluted by ridiculously crowded fights in ridiculously flat environments.

Plus, every song sounds like a low-toner dot matrix printer going down the steps of a burned-out synth factory and trying to print a picture of a guitar.

So no, it doesn’t save the Last Journey of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles presentation, but I’m not sure any amount of polish could have masked how boring the game was.

Here’s the story for each level of mutants in Manhattan: I found some bad guys, activated my special powers until all the bad guys were gone, then moved on to the next pack. He didn’t shun, he wasn’t rejected, he didn’t have to. He just kept walking. That was all the strategy I needed to get to the boss, at which point things inexplicably took a turn for the worse.

In another bad habit from Transformers: Devastation, instead of abilities that would be interesting in combat, bosses have ridiculous amounts of health that need to be destroyed. Every boss – and this sounds like a joke, but I swear it’s not – has seven sanitary napkins that need to be emptied. Seven. In the last two bars, the bosses get angrier and stronger. This is the point where they have the only real chance of beating you if you’re sloppy.

Every boss is like that. Every stage is like this. Actually, the stages are named after the bosses at the end, because who cares, right?

Just when you think you can’t take the grueling grind anymore, Mutants in Manhattan decides to spend the last six hours… making you fight every boss again and again. Six heads, 42 health bars. Are we having fun already?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants In Manhattan (pc) Review

Nostalgia can be a double-edged sword. For Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, it’s more of a double-edged katana.

As someone who enjoyed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon and played all the Konami games when he was growing up, I have a weakness – or is it a soft shell? – For amphibians that use ninjutsu. As such, I lean towards most of the efforts involving Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Donatello in favor of the doubt.

At the same time, nostalgia can also lead to unrealistic expectations. It’s a balance that last year’s Transformers Devastation managed to achieve with single-player combat. However, when we assigned the same system to four turtles at once, the results were apparently much more varied.

Admittedly, the game does some things well. On the plus side, it does a great job of portraying the nature of turtles through the game’s visuals. Similar to Platinum Transformers, the character models in Mutants in Manhattan look great, showcasing comic and cartoon style with nice details and smooth movement. They include big bad guys like Rocksteady, Bebop, Shredder, and Krang, who all look great. The environments, while not as detailed as the character models, are mostly good. They actually look better to me than the Transformers backgrounds, which were more of an afterthought. I thought the voice acting did a great job portraying the actors in the game as well.
