Additionally, all of the test results below were collected with the TV’s backlight set to the default setting of 60, but we’ve also scaled down the contrast readings to 100 for accuracy. If you plan to put TCL 5 series. you might be tempted to set the TV’s backlight to maximum in a bright room, but I found its default setting of 60 to be sufficient for a well-rounded picture, especially in the TV’s Movie and Dark Picture modes.

In our peak brightness tests, we consistently detected the Series 5 at 250-350 nits when receiving an HDR signal. With the backlight set to maximum, our maximum brightness readings rose to 420 nits in HDR. It’s not incredibly bright, but it’s a bit brighter than the similarly priced Samsung TU8000, which lacks quantum dots. That said, enhanced brightness along with richer, more immersive colors is one of the hallmarks of a well-designed QLED TV, and the TCL 5 Series doesn’t live up to its hardware.
