The TCL 55C715 is a QLED TV that costs a bit more than most LED TVs.

We received the 55-inch variant of the TCL C715 series for review; This is a popular size for premium TVs, and one that we personally feel is ideal for most homes. The TCL 55C715 is big, but not huge; If you prefer a different size, the company has 50-inch and 65-inch models in this range.

The TV looks good because of the metal frame around the screen. Although the bezels are similar to what we see on most 55-inch TVs, the bezels are narrower because of the way this TV is designed. There’s a TCL logo on the metal chin at the bottom, and just below that is a fabric-wrapped module that holds the IR receiver and indicator lights. The back of the TCL 55C715 is plain black plastic; It is thinner near the edges, and it is noticeably thicker in the center and bottom.

While we’ve usually seen hands-free voice controls only on premium TVs like the Sony A9G, TCL offers this feature even in its affordable range. It’s on the TCL 55C715 and the TV will always listen for a ‘wake word’ voice command – “OK Google” or “Hey Google”. This allows you to access Google Assistant with just your voice, similar to how smart speakers like Google Home work. You can turn this off with a small physical switch on the bottom right corner of the TV.

Voice control worked well for us, and we were able to instruct Google Assistant for tasks beyond what’s on the TV, such as setting reminders and timers. Indeed, we can ask the Google Assistant to request information or to open specific applications or content on the TV itself.

Until recently, most smart TV manufacturers created their own software interfaces based on Android or Linux frameworks, but we’ve seen many manufacturers now go with the official Android TV. The TCL 55C715 officially runs Android TV 9 Pie, but it’s not the stock version we’ve seen on TVs from brands like Sony and Vu. There are some tweaks including TCL Launcher and some fixes regarding specific apps. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are pre-installed on the TV.

The Google Play Store is present and we were able to install some of our usual apps, but for unknown reasons we noticed that Amazon Prime Video wasn’t listed even though it was pre-installed.

TCL Launcher is similar to Xiaomi’s PatchWall interface, which promotes content rather than apps. However, we found the content arrangement awkward and random with too much regional content in various Indian languages, which may not be relevant for everyone. TCL Launcher is also quite slow to load and navigate, and relies on subscriptions to paid services to get most of its content. We recommend sticking with the Android TV interface with the TCL 55C715.

Despite the software update we received, there are still some issues with the TV. The most important of these was Carmen; The TCL 55C715 typically takes a while to open apps like Netflix and YouTube, and we occasionally noticed a long delay between pressing a button on the remote and the TV responding. While basic tasks like volume adjustment or navigation were fast enough, hotkeys, the Google Assistant button, and the source selection buttons often took a few seconds to perform. The TV has a quick boot mode that works well, but we noticed that it would slow down and crash every few days, requiring a full reboot to fix those issues.

While there are some omissions with the TCL 55C715 at launch in terms of software, the TV makes up for it with performance. The benefits of the QLED screen are apparent from the start and the TV offers a decent viewing experience with all types of content. Of course we enjoyed watching Ultra-HD Dolby Vision content on the 55C715, but we were equally impressed with how well the TV handled lower-resolution content up to Full-HD.
