Of course, some concessions have to be made. The most affordable Series 3 TV definitely offers last-gen 720p resolution (though you can upgrade to 1080p for $20 more). Overall, the TVs in this series offer a screen that’s both limited in brightness and fairly reflective, two aspects that could put the Series 3 out of business for certain rooms. On the plus side, you get solid black levels, impeccable color accuracy, and good backlight uniformity—features we don’t usually see in this price range.

In recent years, TCL has helpfully released its TVs in numbered series that represent their quality and feature set. Series 3 is the simplest and most affordable. It is available in three screen sizes (the 32-inch comes in 720p and 1080p resolutions):
As you can see, the Series 3 TVs are quite affordable, with none of them costing more than $350 MSRP even before retail price. The two 32-inch models are available in HD (720p) and Full HD (1080p) resolutions, but otherwise their specifications are identical:

As modern TVs are called, Series 3 TVs are the definition of simplicity. You get a number of useful features and (in this case) built-in Roku software. More advanced features such as HDR, 4K resolution or eARC-compatible HDMI inputs are not included.
Our review set is a 32-inch 720p Roku TV model purchased from Amazon. As mentioned above, there’s also a version of the Series 3 that uses the Android TV smart platform instead of Roku (we prefer the latter), but we expect the performance stats to be identical.

Before testing, we run each TV for 12 to 24 hours (depending on panel type) to ensure that it is factory calibrated correctly. To test the TCL 32S335, we measured contrast and color performance using a Calibrite ColorChecker Display device with DisplayCal 3 software.

For the results below, we measured the 2021 Series 3 in “Movie” picture mode with the backlight set to “Normal,” which TCL recommends for “most viewing environments.” Please note that the color and contrast levels below will be different in different picture modes and backlight settings. Since the 2021 3 Series doesn’t support HDR, we’re only reporting SDR results:
You get great connectivity options here, such as three HDMI inputs, a media-compatible USB port and a headphone jack.
With three HDMI inputs, an older AV input and a headphone jack, the Series 3 offers enough options for the average user. However, because it lacks HDMI 2.1 inputs, it’s not a good choice for newer devices like the PlayStation 5 (not surprising for a TV in this price range).
The included Roku TV remote is so easy to use, even though this version doesn’t have a headphone jack.

The 32-inch, 720p TCL 3 Series is a relatively handsome little fellow. Mounting requires two V-shaped feet that should be attached to the bottom of the panel, placed slightly wide towards the edges of the screen, so that the TV does not wobble, but takes up minimal space on the table. The power cable is not detachable, but goes directly from the back of the panel.
As with most modern TVs, the bezels that run around the screen are quite narrow, as is the panel when viewed from the side. The TV can also be wall mounted if you prefer.
The included remote is roughly the same type as a standalone Roku streaming device. It’s small, with minimal buttons (no numeric keypad), volume buttons on the side, and shortcuts for Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, and Hulu. It’s easy to hold in one hand and all the buttons can be reached with your thumb, even if your hands are on the small side. It doesn’t include the headphone jack found in the best Roku remotes, so if you want to connect to a TV you’ll need a very long cable.
HDMI inputs and other connectivity options are aligned vertically along the central ridge on the back of the panel (they’re on the right as you approach from the front). Finally, the top back of the panel is adorned with a Roku-style array of triangles, which is a nice touch.

My biggest gripe with the 32S335 is the 720p resolution, and that’s not even a big gripe. When I first started it up, I saw pixels in the Roku menu. However, this is only a problem with this particular model – all others in the series offer 1080p resolution. It’s also less of a problem for things like broadcast TV or streaming content, especially on smaller screens like this one.
If you notice pixels, it’s probably only in menus or when playing a text-heavy video game, and only when you’re a few feet away from the screen. If you look across the room, you probably won’t notice it at all. That said, the 32-inch 1080p Series 3 only costs about $20 more, so there’s not much reason not to play it safe and buy that one.
Otherwise, the tests revealed a simple but perfectly serviceable little TV that will cover the entire series. I was particularly impressed with the average black level. It’s dark enough that you can dim or turn off the lights on movie nights (at least in “Movie” picture mode), and thanks to the direct LED backlight, there’s minimal flash illumination, a common problem with edge-to-edge TVs where the backlight is visible in shaded areas. parts of the screen.
Image quality is best in ‘Movie’ mode with the backlight set to ‘Normal’, but this doesn’t make the screen very bright. If you’re viewing in a room with more ambient light, you’ll want to increase the backlight. It’s also worth noting that you’ll need to download the Roku mobile app to access the picture modes. The only thing you can do with the remote is change the backlight.

The 2021 3 Series does a great job of streaming movies and TV shows, even if you like to dim the lights.
Tests also revealed good color reproduction. While you won’t get any eye-popping colors here, all the basic boxes are ticked. During testing I noticed that the blue primary was a bit on the magenta side, while the red primary was a bit orange, but small errors like this are common in factory calibration, even on much more expensive TVs. The average “taste” of the white/gray elements is also a bit cool in the “Film” mode, but still within tolerance for open visibility.
What does all this mean to you? As you’d expect from a $200 TV, the 2021 3 Series does a good job of streaming movies and TV shows, even if you like to dim the lights. But due to its resolution and refresh rate (60 Hz), it is not a good choice as a computer monitor or as a screen for newer game consoles.
However, if you’re just looking for something easy to use for TV binging, you’ll be satisfied. I looked a little
