This is a quick post to highlight a small update to my Install SQL Server 2017.ps1 script used to install SCCM 1902 alongside SQL Server 2017 on the recently released Windows Server 2019. I’ve added a new section dealing with TLS 1.2 status checking which creates a warning for the SQL Server 2012 Client Agent version that is installed as part of a SQL Server 2017 installation.
Sql Server Versions
By default, after installing SQL Server 2017 even with Cumulative Update 14, the SQL Server Client Agent is at a version that doesn’t properly support TLS 1.2 for SCCM, so we need to upgrade it. You need a client agent with version 11.4.7001.0 or later to support TLS 1.2.
To solve this I wrote the following PowerShell script which has now been updated to the original script, it will verify the version of your SQL Server Client Agent, and if it doesn’t match it will download and upgrade (or it is the file downloaded earlier) use if you provide it).
Here you can see that the SQL Server installation script has run and updated the SQL Server Native Client Agent version as part of the installation.
And that means the SCCM installer will be happy to check that specific status, as you can see it says “passed”.

Here is the code that updates the SQL Server Client Agent, for anyone interested, please note that if you run it separately, you will need to reboot the server before installing SCCM. If you’re not ready to upgrade, and you’re not ready to move to the cloud, you have the option of purchasing a subscription to Extended Security Updates to receive critical security updates for up to three years after the end of support date Is.
Another option is to move your workload with SQL Server to an Azure Virtual Machine. You can migrate your system as is and keep your end-of-support SQL Server, or you can upgrade to a newer version of SQL Server. It’s best for migration and for applications that have OS-level access. SQL Server Virtual Machines are lift-and-shift ready for existing applications that require rapid migration to the cloud with minimal or no changes.
If you want to reduce the maintenance burden, reduce costs, and eliminate the need for future upgrades, you can move your workloads to a single database, Azure SQL Database. This option is best for modern cloud applications that want to use the latest stable SQL Server database engine features and have development and marketing time constraints.

WMI resides in the shared service host along with many other services. To prevent all services from stopping if a provider fails, the providers are offloaded to a separate host process called “Wmiprvse.exe”.
