You can’t walk into a wireless retail store without being bombarded with “free phone” offers. And while there’s nothing wrong with getting a free phone deal, there are almost always restrictions. Paying out of pocket means you’ll have a lot more freedom, but sky-high prices on flagship phones mean this isn’t an option for everyone.
Budget phones to the rescue. These devices cost around $500 or less, making them more attractive if you want to buy your phone right away or keep your monthly payments low.
Many of our choices are around $400 or $500, but there are some great options for $300 and under, too. You could get a bright OLED screen or a battery that lasts for days. If you can upgrade one or two features that are most important to you, and you’re willing to compromise elsewhere, you can get a phone that meets your needs for half the price of a flagship.

What compromises can you expect from a budget phone? Some combination of the following: slower processors, less storage, and worse cameras than flagship phones, almost universally. Many have lower resolution screens, and most lack official ratings for water resistance, wireless charging, and NFC chips for contactless payments.
The 2022 iPhone SE will last for more than five years if properly cared for, thanks to Apple’s excellent track record of offering iOS updates for older devices. But its small 4.7-inch screen feels cramped now and may be difficult to use five years from now as apps and web pages continue to be designed for larger screens.

The 128GB iPhone SE is the best value in the smartphone market, period. It is a great deal at $479 when you consider that you will continue to get iOS updates for more than five, even six or seven years.

But before you buy an SE expect to spend most of the next decade without buying a new phone: make sure you can live with the very small and old 4.7-inch screen. It’s the same size as the iPhone 6, and it’s starting to feel cramped in an age where apps and web pages are designed for larger screens. The SE’s large bezels also make the device look old-fashioned, but the use of a small screen will be a bigger factor for years to come.
This is the biggest hit against SE. Otherwise it is a fantastic midrange device. Its A15 processor is the same as the iPhone 13 Pro Max, so the performance is excellent. There is IP67 waterproofing and wireless charging – both of which are not common in this price range – and although it uses the same 12-megapixel camera that iPhones have used since the dawn of time, it takes very good photos and clips video quality. The camera lacks a night mode, which is a curious omission – many other midrange phones offer some sort of low-light photo mode, and the phone’s processor is certainly up to the task. This SE generation offers 5G connectivity – low and mid band only, which is good. You won’t get the fast millimeter-wave 5G you might find in an NFL stadium, but it’s nothing to lose any sleep over. Battery life has also improved over the last generation and generally lasts a full day unless you really push it with demanding tasks like gaming and video streaming.
If you can live with the small screen and don’t mind the lack of night mode, we’d recommend picking up the 128GB version. The base model’s 64GB of storage isn’t enough, and you’ll be glad you spent the extra $50 when you use this phone for years to come.

The Pixel 7A packs in a bunch of features that are hard to find for around $500, including wireless charging and an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. It’s not the cheapest phone in the class, but it’s best suited for going the distance.

The Google Pixel 7A ups the ante for what you can expect from a midrange phone. At $499, it’s right at the top of what we’d consider “budget” – and a little more expensive than its closest US competitor: the $449 Samsung Galaxy A54. But with a camera that leads the class and extra flagships like wireless charging, it is a step ahead of anything else in the mid-range.
One of the 7A’s biggest upgrades is a new 6.1-inch, 90Hz display, which makes animations and scrolling much smoother than last year’s 60Hz panel. The 7A uses the same Tensor G2 chipset that powers the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, along with 8GB of RAM. This translates into excellent performance for daily work and even heavy tasks such as gaming. The 7A is also tougher than the average midranger, with an aluminum frame and an IP67 rating for resistance against dust and water immersion.

The battery life is good enough to get you through a whole day with moderate use, but if you add in an extended gaming session, you might need to finish it before bed. Wireless charging is available, which is very rare in the budget phone class. If you’re already in the habit of wireless charging, the 7A fits perfectly into your routine.
The camera is where the Pixel 7A really shines. It is based on a new 64-megapixel main camera with optical stabilization as well as a capable ultra-wide. It’s not everything you’d find in a flagship camera – there’s no video portrait mode or telephoto lens – but it’s reliable even in low-light conditions where competitors like the A54 struggle.

The best feature of the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is its screen. It’s a 6.4-inch, 1080p OLED with a 120Hz refresh rate that can almost fool you into thinking you’re using a $1,000 phone. Its camera and overall feature set can’t be compared to the Pixel 7A, but it’s a very good mid-range phone in its own right, and it starts at a slightly lower MSRP of $449.
The A54 is built with durable glass panels on the back and front and is IP67 rated for protection against dust and deep water immersion. It is also backed by a strong software support policy. Samsung promises four years of OS version updates and five years of security updates, which is one of the best policies for any Android phone at any price. There’s also a large 5,000mAh battery that can last you through a full day of heavy use, but you’ll need to buy a charger separately if you want to take advantage of its 25W fast charging speed.
Camera quality is good, but not a strong point. Photos and videos in good lighting look good, but the A54 struggles to keep up with any kind of motion in low light. There is a night mode for still subjects, but it will be difficult to get a clear photo of your child or pet in dim indoor light, and the Pixel 7A is well ahead of the curve in this department.
Google’s Pixel 6A comes with a relatively small 6.1-inch OLED screen, but it performs excellently with a good camera and battery.

With a permanent price drop of $349, the Pixel 6A remains in Google’s lineup even after the launch of the 7A. Its default 60Hz display isn’t quite as fast as the 7A’s faster display, and it comes with older camera hardware. But there is still a lot to like, especially at the new price point.
