Skype has also greatly improved its power management. When you’re logged into the app, but not using it, it can run in the background without consuming processing power, meaning it won’t drain your battery. However, it still keeps you logged in so you can receive calls.

Skype tends to be a power hog, sucking up juice even when it’s running in the background. It’s not a problem when you’re on a desktop computer connected to the wall, but it is when you want your tablet to last all day. Whether the new app will increase battery life when activated remains to be seen.
Apparently it also lets you receive calls on the lock screen, though this didn’t work in my tests. This is probably due to the security restrictions I have set, which do not allow updates and notifications to be sent when the password is not entered. It would be a big oversight if it allowed you to make a call without entering a password first; it’s not worth thinking about what your contacts would see if the tablet were stolen.
As for call quality, this will still depend on the resolution of your webcam (or front camera) and your internet connection. Earlier this year, Skype upgraded its infrastructure, moving from using a peer-to-peer based system to servers. While this may sound fancy, it means improved call security, more stable calls and allows your connection to remain open when the app is not active.
The app will be free in the Windows 8 app store. It’s not there yet, but it will arrive in time for the release of Windows 8 this month. It’s also coming to Windows Phone 8 in early November in a very similar fashion, although Skype wasn’t ready to reveal it yet.
