Samsung’s new Galaxy S smartphones are here, and they’re called the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra. Just like last year, you get two mainstream flagship smartphones and a ball wall device with all the bells and whistles. But in an interesting twist, the S21 Ultra also supports S Pen input…?
Size Of Samsung S21 Ultra
Let’s start with the device that mounts to the wall, the Galaxy S21 Ultra. This smartphone sports a 6.8-inch Quad HD+ display on the front with ultra-thin bezels and a small hole at the top that houses the 40MP selfie shooter.

That display is, of course, Samsung’s Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, which offers a 120Hz refresh rate. What’s improved this time is that this new screen is now capable of an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate with Quad HD+ resolution. It was previously limited to Full HD+, so now you don’t have to choose between high resolution and high refresh rate. You can have both. Adaptive refresh rates now range from 10Hz to 120Hz, meaning the display can intelligently adapt to what’s on screen.
Inside, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is powered by a Snapdragon 888 processor or an Exynos 2100 processor. In Malaysia, we get the Exynos variant. The S21 Ultra can be configured to have 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of internal storage. In Malaysia, we get two configurations, one with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and the other with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. Finally, there is no 128GB variant locally.
The lights are powered by a 5000mAh battery that supports 25W fast wired charging. It will also do fast wireless charging at up to 15W and will be able to charge other devices and accessories wirelessly. However, you won’t get a charger/power adapter in the box.
For photography, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a quad-camera setup. You get a 108MP wide-angle camera with f/1.8 aperture, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and two 10MP telephoto cameras, one with 3X optical zoom and one with 10X optical zoom. Despite the new telephoto setting, Space Zoom is still 100X maximum. To help focus, since the main sensor doesn’t have Dual Pixel AF, the S21 Ultra also gets a laser AF module.

There are also some updated software features, including the ability to record 4K @ 60fps video on all cameras, while video quality can be upscaled to 8K via the main sensor. Super Steady now works in 4K @ 60fps, and there’s a new Director’s View shooting mode that lets you preview what each lens is looking at (and the frame) so you can easily switch between them mid-shoot.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Galaxy S21 Ultra is that Samsung has now added S Pen support to the smartphone. However, unlike the S Pen of the Note series, this one is not stored on the device. It’s sold as a separate accessory and comes with a case that you can use to store the S Pen when you’re not using it. This S Pen is also much more limited in functionality as it doesn’t have Bluetooth connectivity, so it can’t act as a remote control or use air gestures.
Of course, the S21 Ultra retains the high-end key features of its predecessor, including a very nice glass and metal build (with Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and back), IP68 dust and water resistance, AKG stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos tuning, 5G, WiFi 6E. and UWB tracking. Samsung has also increased the size of the in-screen fingerprint scanner by 1.7 times.
Beyond the two main flagships, with a few tweaks you get pretty much the same thing. First, both phones share the new Snapdragon 888 and Exynos 2100 processors at their cores, but the memory configuration is slightly different. Instead, you get 8GB of RAM on both phones and either 128GB or 256GB of internal storage. In Malaysia, we get one variant and it comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.

On the front, you also get thinned screens. The S21 has a 6.2-inch Full HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen, while the S21+ has a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen. While both screens will still run at adaptive 120Hz (48Hz to 120Hz), they lose a lot of resolution. This means that their pixel densities are now reduced to 421 and 394 pixels per inch respectively. That’s a far cry from the 515 ppi you find on the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
You still get very thin bezels and a small hole at the top, but the selfie cameras on the S21 and S21+ are now limited to 10MP shooters. Instead, you get triple camera systems with 12MP wide-angle and 12MP ultra-wide cameras, along with 64MP telephoto cameras on both devices. These new cameras also get the same software updates as the S21 Ultra, so they should be pretty capable shooters. The only thing is that the maximum zoom is 30X instead.
The S21 is powered by a 4,000mAh battery, which has the same capacity as the S20. But the S21+ sees a significant upgrade, now with 4800mAh instead. Along with more efficient processors and lower resolution displays, you can expect an improvement in overall battery life. Charging is the same as the S21 Ultra, with 25W fast wired charging and 15W fast wireless charging, and supports reverse wireless charging.
With the flagship duo, you also get stereo speakers, IP68 dust and water resistance, and the full range of Samsung ecosystem features like Knox security, Samsung Pay and Bixby. But there is a difference when it comes to construction. Both phones have Gorilla Glass Victus on the front, but you get a Glasstic back on the Galaxy S21. Yes, the same polycarbonate back found on the Galaxy Note 20.

If you thought the Galaxy S21 lineup, which was just announced at 2021’s first Unpacked event, would look like the Galaxy S20 models from spring, you might be in for a surprise. With the S21 versions, Samsung brings design improvements to what is already one of the best screen-to-body ratios in its class. First, we have a beveled, flatter edge in the top right corner that makes the back look like it was carved from a piece of marble, and the camera island stands tall and proud, blended into the corner edges.
Samsung also aims to significantly improve its Infinity-O design, not only by reducing the front chin, but also by merging the camera bump with the sides of the phone, giving the impression of one continuous design flow. Samsung is so proud of its smooth display bezel width on the front of the Galaxy S21 models that it has trademarked new design features called the Blade Bezel and Blade Display.

The “blade” part may have something to do with the new design of the Galaxy S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra, which combines the side bezel with the camera island, but it’s more likely to refer to Samsung’s new Contour Cut Camera body design.
Since only the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a slightly curved screen, while the S21 and S21+ have flat panels, Samsung used a slight overall thickening of the bezel to achieve uniformity. In other words, Samsung has clearly managed to reduce the bottom notch to 2mm, but that’s as far as it can go given that the display connector is in that area, and instead of going any further, it just did the rest of the S21. /S21+ equal width frame.
This creates a new symmetrical look across the display bezel, but combined with the flat display makes the S21 and S21+ ever so slightly wider than their predecessors at 151.7mm x 71.2mm x 8mm, compared to the S20’s 151.7mm x 69.1mm x 7.9. mm as you can see above.
In terms of aesthetics, nothing beats the consistent width of the bezel in Samsung’s Infinity-O design, which is available for all screens, so we’re excited to see the new front and back design of the Galaxy S series.
