There was a time when 70-inch TVs came out in the world of 50-inch models, but despite this, large screen sizes have begun to normalize. If you have the wall space to accommodate such a large display, Best Buy is having a one-day flash sale to convince you to fill that space. The Sharp Aquos 70-inch LED 4K TV is now $480, marked down from its regular price of $650. This seems like an excellent price for this set, which has never broken the $500 mark before.

New for 2020 is Sharp’s Full Array LED panel. It includes HDR10 support, Wi-Fi 5, four HDMI ports and a pair of USB inputs. While we prefer the Roku operating system, Android TV is excellent and supports practically all the streaming channels you could want, with the exception of Apple TV. You might want to add a sound bar, but this one has a pair of 20-watt speakers.

TV deals like this are relatively rare after Black Friday is over, so here’s a chance to get a big screen for a small price.

The Sharp LC-70LE73U is bigger than any other mainstream flat panel TV and is a solid overall value. It offers stronger picture quality with better screen uniformity than edge-lit LED-based LCD, but its matte screen and high-potential light output make its bright-room picture quality better than larger plasmas. It comes with excellent support and support options and built-in Wi-Fi, and consumes less power than plasma models.

This 70-inch LED-based LCD is too big to fit in many rooms and too expensive for most TV buyers’ budgets. Its black level, uniformity, and off-angle picture quality aren’t as good as big-screen plasmas. Its separate interfaces for apps and widgets can be confusing, and its exterior styling is somewhat generic.

For those who want a large flat-screen TV who don’t want a plasma or projector, the 70-inch Sharp LC-70LE73U series LED-based LCD offers high-quality picture quality, especially in bright rooms.

If you don’t have $22,000 or more to spend, the 70-inch Sharp LC-70LE732U is the largest flat-panel TV you can buy today — the competition tops out at 65 inches. Besides, it’s a good deal by giant-TV standards, available for less than $3,000 at press time. Sure, rear projection models give the book a larger screen size, but judging by this, they can’t match the image quality or design of this Sharp. The fact that it’s one of the most popular TV shows this summer proves that big TVs are gaining mainstream appeal.

Compared to the best large plasmas, the LC-70LE73U series doesn’t perform well in the dark confines of a home theater, but the brighter the room, the more its light output advantage shines. Energy efficiency is also an issue at these screen sizes, and this 70-inch LED pales in comparison to power-hungry plasmas. No, it’s not for everyone, but if you have at least 9 feet between your TV wall and your couch and want the immersion that only a big screen can offer, the Sharp LC-70LE73U series is worth a look.

Series information: We evaluated the Sharp LC-70LE732U, but this review also applies to the other 70-inch Sharp TVs listed below. The TVs have almost identical specifications and should provide similar picture quality. The main difference is that the 733 and 734 have a 240Hz refresh rate and the 732 has a 120Hz rate (the 733 and 734 also have a different trim color and the 733 is missing some minor features). See below for more details.

This review does not apply to the 60-inch LC-60LE632U, which uses edge-lit LED technology and has different picture quality than the 70-inch models. This does not apply to the 3D LC-70LE735U, although we expect its 2D image quality to be similar to our results below.

The first thing you’ll notice about the Sharp LC-70LE73U series is its large size. The screen measures 2.85 x 5.1 feet, roughly 2,100 square inches—compared to just 1,800 square inches for those pipsqueak 65-inch TVs. Even when showing older 4:3 TV shows with letterbox bars on either side, the active picture area on the Sharp measures 57 inches on the dash.

The rest of the TV design is meant to avoid notice, and that’s not a bad thing. We described the series as “a bit ordinary” and its big brothers follow suit. The LC-70LE732U features mostly glossy black, medium-sized bezels, slightly rounded corners, and a strip of silver trim along the bottom edge (the 733 and 734 have black trim). Once you remove the stickers, you’re left with the Sharp and Aquos logos, along with an illuminated carrot (which can be turned off) reminiscent of the “Star Trek” logo in the bottom center.

As a full-range LED (see below) the LC-70LE73U can’t match the slimness of its Edge-lit sibling, but its size when viewed in profile still looks slim at its 3.5-inch depth. Coming in at 92.6 pounds, it’s not too heavy for such a large TV. Sharp’s adjustable stand is non-rotating but has an admirably low profile.

Thinner and longer than most clickers, the Sharp’s stylus suffers from a lack of backlighting and often too small a gap between the keys. However, the best feature is the three programmable buttons that provide quick access to your favorite apps.

Sharp’s 2011 menu system was modified to make Live Image appear upwards and to the right. Unfortunately for calibrators, the menu layout can interfere with mid-screen measurements more than usual, making setup more cumbersome than necessary. On the plus side, the menus are clear and responsive, and we appreciate the full manual — a carbon copy of the PDF version, complete with table of contents — available in the Aquos Advantage Help section, along with a glossary and FAQ.

The LC-70LE73U series is the only TV to feature a full-range LED backlight without local dimming ( more info ). It doesn’t get the better contrast and black level benefits of local dimming, but it avoids the uniformity problems of edge-lit LEDs.

Like other Sharp LCDs, the LC-70LE73U features Quatron, a proprietary variation of panel design used by almost all LCDs (LED-based and otherwise), plasmas, monitors, projectors and smartphones. All 1080p TVs have 1,920×1,080 pixels, which typically contain three sub-pixels, one each for red, green and blue. Quatron adds a fourth subpixel, yellow. You can check out the performance section of this review for more information about our technology from 2010, which has changed significantly this year, and detailed tests.

Other than that the LC-70LE73U is designed like a typical mid-range LCD TV. Again, the 732U model has a 120Hz refresh rate, while the 733 and 734 models get 240Hz ( more info ). This is a major difference between the three models, so we don’t consider the 733 and 734 models worth the extra money. Active 3D is available on the company’s step-up LC-70LE735U. All models except the 733 feature Quad Pixel Plus, another Quattro-derived mode said to improve clear resolution and smooth diagonal lines.

A few other extras are unique to Sharp. IP Control (again absent from the 733) is designed to interface with custom installation remote control systems, such as Control 4, AMX, and Crestron, which operate over Ethernet as opposed to RS-232. The Aquos Advantage Live is Sharp’s best Live
