According to Verizon Wireless, the company is currently investigating a mass spam text message campaign targeting its customers.

“Verizon is aware that malicious actors are sending spam messages to some customers that appear to be coming from the customers’ own numbers,” a Verizon spokesperson said in a statement first provided to The Verge. “Our team is actively working to block these messages, and we have worked with US law enforcement to identify and stop the source of this fraudulent activity. Verizon continues to work on behalf of customers to prevent spam texts and related activity.”
The spam tactic of spoofing a target’s phone number and then calling or texting them is not new. All carrier phone numbers are vulnerable to this type of spam and fraudulent marketing messages. However, this particular spam campaign seems to be particularly prevalent among Verizon Wireless customers.
Although all of these spam messages attempt to link to their targets, the type of links sent seem to vary greatly. Some Verizon customers reported being sent a link to a fake customer survey. Here’s a classic spam text message tactic that tells the target they need to click on a link to claim a free gift as a result of paying their latest phone bill. Another spam message attempts to send Verizon users to the website of Russia’s state news network, Channel One Russia.
